1 August 23-25, 2018 Bergamo Center 4400 Shakertown Rd. Dayton, OH Hosted by: Heritage Basketry Guild, Inc of Dayton, OH What a retreat!

2 Classes Reflections on the Lake By: Laura Lee Zanger 8 w x 15 L x 11 H $90 This tote is made with solid green and variegated 4-color space-dyed reeds. The lower section of the twill design is woven with the space-dyed colors to seemingly reflect the upper design in the shimmering water below. The handles are four-strand braided sea grass. Christmas Stamps By: Laura Lee Zanger 2-1/2 x 2-1/2 Splash of Bling Wine Tray By: Marilyn Parr 18 L x 11 W x 6 H 7pm-9pm $30 $75 The Christmas Stamps are small twill mats with the designs of an ornament and a Christmas Tree. They are made of 1/8 ash. The perimeter is twined with waxed linen and cut with a pinking rotary cutter to look like the old postage stamps. They make nice ornaments at Christmas or nice embellishments to a gift. Serve your wine or your preferred choice of beverage with just a splash of Bling! Class will begin by getting your corks dressed in Swarovski crystal Bling. You will then move on to a base that has the spokes glued in and is weaver-ready. A Gretchen Rolled border will put the finishing touch on this eye-catching basket.

3 Continued: Napkin/Cookie Board By: Marilyn Parr 8-1/2 W x 11-1/2 L Kennedy By: Debbie Hurd 11 L x 7 W x 5-1/2 H Come to my Garden By: Debbie Hurd 16 L x 8 W x 4 H 7pm-9pm $35 All Levels 9am-4pm $50 4pm-9pm $41 Cutest napkin holder you will see! Made on a cutting board shape but will hold napkins. cookies, crackers, rolls, or whatever snack you would like to share! Super easy and fast to weave. Great gift idea! You use round reed for spokes, add some triple twine and flat reed, and then finish with a braid that has a little different twist to it. This basket is woven on a painted/sealed black oval base. All weaving material are shades of black and grays for a wonderful contrast. Techniques used are: 4-rod wale, 2/1 continuous twill, crossstitch and double lashed rim. A choice of embellishment at class time. This basket has a woven bottom with fillers, start/stop weaving and overlays. The handle is a semi-wrapped handle with a butterfly knot on top. The double lashing is done in a V style and enamel Herb sign is attached last. Great basket for any gardener. Black and Green colors only

4 continued Farmhouse Table Basket By: Dianne Gleixner 10 x 23 x 5 tall Flying Geese Basket By: Dianne Gleixner 7 x 10 x 6 tall Nantucket Salad Bowl By: Jan Beyma 6 High x 10 diameter 9am-2pm $47 All Levels 4pm-9pm $46 9am-9pm $95 Students will alternate narrow and wide spokes to set up an open weave base, then weave start/stop rows up the sides for this long, squatty basket. Brown leather handles will be added to the ends while rimming. A technique to upset all of the spokes the first time around will be taught and controlling the shape of such a long, short basket will be emphasized. Weave a unique open weave base, start/stop rows, triple twining, and twill weave using 3 different colors of dyed reed. All the rows are start/stop, so figuring out how to begin each row, along with shaping, will be the focus of this class. This rectangular shaped basket is a great size for so many uses. The colors will be navy blue, green and burgundy. An oak base will be glued to the bottom of a wooden salad bowl which will be part of the basket. The staves will be cane and woven in a twill pattern. A reed rim will be nailed on then lashed with cane to finish off the basket. Basket will be pre-started. (Please let me know if you weave left handed. A tool kit will be provided for class use.

5 Continued: Color Scheme By: Ruth Garcia 7-1/2 x 5-1/2 high Paper Reindeer By: Ruth Garcia Size not specified, but they are small, like a tree ornament. Very nice! $65 7pm-9pm $20 All Levels Students will weave with 140-pound watercolor paper to create a large cathead basket. The paper will be painted and pre-cut by the instructor with a variety of colors to choose from. The shaping of the basket will be emphasized. The original pattern was published in Basket Express, Winter Billy Malone made revising it in 1999, and Wendy G. Jensen also made changes in 2007 for Reindeer woven in ash. I have made revisions in The Reindeer are constructed out of painted watercolor paper to resemble leather. Students will weave two Reindeer and attach a gold thread for harness. A demo will be given on how to paint your own watercolor paper.

A back roped handle completes the basket. The fee includes a webbing strap system. Custom leather strap system with solid brass hardware for an additional $25. The sheath can be omitted if desired. Several colors will be available and a variety of buttons for embellishment.

Friday Classes Snowflake Tray By: Laura Lee Zanger 12 w x 12 L x 2 high Potbelly Piggyback By: Marilyn Parr 52 circumference x 20 tall Friday $75 Advanced Friday $95 The Snowflake Tray is made with two extra stakes in one direction that allows for the stepping up of the design into the sides of the tray. The twill design produces snowflakes in both positive and negative colors of ice blue. Students may not finish rim in class. However, instruction to complete the trays will be thoroughly discussed. This #2 in the Piggyback handle series! You will start out with a round wood base, spokes glued in and weaverready. Our main goal will be shaping the potbelly. I have a couple of tricks up my sleeve that I will pass on to help you achieve this shape. The basket will be finished by adding the unique piggyback handle and the whirls around the top.

8 Friday Continued: Deadwood By: Debbie Hurd 9 w x 7-1/2 high Braided Willilamsburg By: Dianne Gleixner 12 x 17 x 8 tall w/o handle Nantucket Swirls of Fun By: Jan Beyma 5 high x 6-1/2 diameter Friday 9am-4pm $44 Friday 9am-4pm $65 Friday $75 Deadwood is woven over a class mold with both dyed and natural stakes. Students will weave a filled base incorporating a Williamsburg D handle, weave start/stop rows, triple twine with a step-up, and learn the braid weave accenting the sides. They will also increase the height on the sides and learn to weave a rewoven braided rim with another simple braid on the inside of the rim. Shaping will be emphasized so the basket flares out to match the handle shape. Students will learn how to set up a Nantucket basket and how to incorporate a twill in pattern into the basket. Staves and weavers will be cane. A cheater rim will finish off the basket topped with a lid. The base, cheater rim and lid will be Cherry and will be pre-finished. Basket will be woven over a class plastic mold. A tool kit will be provided for class use.

There are many patterns to choose from. A tool kit will be provided. This lovely willow basket is made with a split stick base and then staked up in the normal manner with three rod waling. The unique feature of this basket is the siding with Zig Zag weave! Zig Zag is a type of French randing. All the weavers are woven in one direction and then are all woven in the reverse direction throughout the siding. Very colorful Procion dyed willow will be offered for two color Zig Zag weave which makes this basket even more appealing. Top waling, a rod border and two roped handles complete this basket.
