1 Common Threads Brought to you by the Cullman Fiber Guild: Bringing the Past to the Present March 2017 VOL. 8 ISSUE 3 President s Message Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living; it s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Dr. Seuss Well, spring is trying to come through. If the weather permits, we ll have lots of blooms on the trees. It s a time to think happy, bright colors in your fiber arts. We had a good rug hooking workshop last month with lots of little sheep around. There were several new people and we are very glad to see you all. Coming up we are having the quilt square workshop this month. This should be lots of fun. Even if you know about quilting, it s always good to get another perspective on any skill. I look forward to seeing ya ll at the basket group and the next regular meeting. March 25, D Bowtie Quilt Square Cost $10 Maximum # 12 Leader: Renee Lamar of Heart Land and Nimble Thimble Quilting Guilds Leader will provide all materials needed and will also demonstrate how to cut, piece, and hand sew together. The pieces can be sewn with machine, if members want to bring their own. Do you want to be our next President or Treasurer? Elections for both President and Treasurer will be held June 24 at the annual picnic (don t forget its Potluck.) We are excited to see who will be the next president and treasurer. Don t forget to tell us if you want to run for office. If you don t speak up we won t know you want to do something. -Charlie

2 \ April 22, 2017 Papermaking Supply Fee: Option 1: $1 for use of all supplies. Option 2: $8 to purchase mould and deckle and use of all supplies Option 3: $1 use your own paper making equipment. If your mould and deckle are too large to fit in an 8.5 x 10.5 pan bring your own pan. Maximum number of students: 15 Pre-Register by April 9 (to reserve equipment) Open to adults & youth ages 14 and up. Learn to make paper from recycled paper! Make pulp in a blender and experiment with different textures and surface treatments. During the workshop, we ll be able to air dry some sheets and iron other sheets dry to see the differences. Bring a sponge, a couple of towels, junk mail to recycle, any paper including construction paper to add color to your handmade paper, and items to include such as glitter, dried herbs and flowers. To be able to dry your paper under pressure at home you will need to bring a stiff board at least 6 x 9 and something to separate the damp sheets of paper. (6 x 9 pieces of felt, wool and wool blend fabric, and flannel are ideal. Non-woven, disposable kitchen wipes are also fine, but your paper will have the same surface texture as the wipes.) If you have a craft blender, bring it too. You won t be able to blend food with the appliance after this. Upcoming Workshops May 27, D Blocks Supply Fee: Maximum number of students: 12 Learn how to make 3 D Blocks with plastic canvas. Add letters, numbers, shapes, or whatever else you can think of. When you register we will reply and tell you that you are registered or on the waiting list. If you are on the waiting list and someone says they cannot go we will send you an or call (if we have your number.) If you get this or phone call you will need to reply or we will go to the next person on the waiting list. Cullman Area Groups: Heartland Quilt Guild of Cullman meets on the second Thursdays at Christ Covenant Church, St. Joseph St. Get a head start on the workshop by tearing (or shredding) the paper into strips and discard the part of envelopes that have glue.
