Evelyne Liebmann, President IGNORE THE PATTERN AND GET THE SWEATER YOU WANT Patty Lyons will teach us how to embrace the difference between knitting a design and following a pattern. In this sweater code breaking lecture, she will reveal the parts of a pattern that can (and sometimes should) be ignored to get your perfect sweater. Once you understand how to see the key elements in any pattern, even if you are a first time sweater knitter, you can get the sweater of your dreams. Learn how to use the schematic to map out your path and decode tricky things like reverse shaping and at the same time. Break the hidden sweater code and cast on for your perfect garment! 2 JUNE 2017 From the President.... It is hard to believe that we are halfway through The first half of this year has been packed with interesting speakers. The second half of the year will be just as interesting. New members are still joining our merry band of knitters, and we welcome them all! We are happy to see so many returning members as well. If you have an idea for our next KAL please share your ideas with Suzanne Sunday. KALs KAL s can be about a specific project or a knitting technique. Speaking of techniques, Patty Lyons will be our guest speaker this month. We are sure to learn how to add to our knitting skills. Summer is practically upon us; warm weather and, hopefully, sunny skies await. Can our annual July Picnic be far behind? Once again we are asking members to bring an appetizer or dessert suitable for 12 for this event. The picnic is a great way to share with your fellow members, what you have been working on, and exchange new techniques we have acquired. As always, happy knitting, J. 3 JUNE 2016 RAVELRY PART 2: PATTERNS 2 So we now move ahead to the advanced search option for patterns listed on Ravelry. On the upper left portion of the screen, you will see the search section and, immediately below that, the advanced search option. Click on that. On the far left portion of the screen, all of the advanced search options are shown. I think the most helpful ones are: has a photo, category and weight, although we will also discuss yardage and availability. Has a photo goes without saying; if there is no photo, you won t have any idea what it will look like, so click yes for that. Category allows you to pick what you d like to make. For example, you can pick standard socks by going to accessories, then feet/legs, then socks, then mid calf. Similarly, you can click on accessories, neck/torso and continue clicking on cowls or shawls and further refine your searches. Try clicking on clothing and explore your options for sweaters. Once you ve picked and refined the category you are interested in, you can pick the weight yarn you would like to work with. Let s try that with a cardigan that you d like to make for yourself using fingering weight yarn. First, continue refining your search by going to gender and choosing female, then to age and choosing adult ; then to fit and pick fitted. I ve now narrowed my search from thousands of patterns down to 522, but I can still narrow it further. I can look at the 62 free patterns. I can also look for patterns that will allow me to use those three 400 yard skeins of that gorgeous yarn that I have in my stash. If you tried to click on the yards choice, you will see that now you ve narrowed your search to 172 patterns and, by specifying the use of only one color yarn and piece of cake and easy ratings and English, you are down to 16 patterns. So, play around and explore the advanced search option. When you finish a search, you just go back to the top and click the clear search button. 3
