Conner St., Noblesville, IN (317) Oct. 9, 2013 Rent our longarm machine to finish your quilts If you re among the many quilters who ve wished they could do their own quilting on the longarm machine, the Avante genie has granted your wish. We are now renting time on our machine. It is available Fridays through Tuesdays. Before renting it, you must complete the Longarm 101 class in the shop. To ensure you get hands-on experience, classes will be limited to four people.. The first three will be 10:30-12:30 Oct. 19, 26 and Nov. 9. Call the shop, (317) , to reserve space in one of those sessions. Details about renting the longarm are posted on our website. Click on the Shopping tab, then click on longarm quilting. Christy Wiegand will continue to quilt for customers who prefer to have someone else finish their pieces. In the near future, the HandiQuilter Sweet 16 also will be available to rent by the hour. Indy Quilt Guild show to feature more than 375 quilts All Around Town is the theme for the Indianapolis Quilters Guild annual show. It will feature more than 375 quilts, appraisals, demonstrations, lectures, a vendor mall, auctions, mystery bags and treasure baskets. The show - always a good one - is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 25 and 26 at Westfield Middle School, which is at U.S. 31 and 181 st Street. Admission is $8 each day. Leftie turns remnants into flattering scarf Leftie, an asymmetrical shawlette, was designed to show off something every knitter has: leftovers. The stripes will swirl around your neck in a very flattering way, and the tiny leaves make your favorite colors shine. Learn how to make it with Mary Andrews at Knit a Leftie Scarf, 10:30-12:30 Oct. 10, 17, 24 and 31. It s all garter stitch, so the knitting is fun and relaxing. The pattern is flexible; you can use any amount of yarn and end up with a neckerchief, a small shawlette or a large shawlette. The class is free. We can download the pattern for $7.50 for you from or you can download it yourself. Search for Leftie by Martina Behm. Use your stash for yarn or Mary will help you select yarns at the first class. 2 New mystery BOM: Quilter s Dessert October is National Dessert Month, so why not indulge in a sweet one that has no calories? The eight-month Quilter s Dessert mystery quilt block of the month fits the bill and it s designed for experienced beginners and higher skill levels. Choose from the 56-by-98-inch bed runner or the 100-by-100-inch queen-sized quilt. You can select any fabrics. The quilt designer recommends MODA's 3 Sisters-Vin du Jour. Kits in this line will be available. $25 covers the sign-up and a pattern for each month. Earn 2 University of Always In Stitches points per month in this BOM, which starts Oct. 28. Get inn-spired at Lunch and Learn Learn how to use inn-spire plus at this month s Lunch and Learn. Kathy Zook will turn fabric into a 3-D pumpkin using the heat-moldable fusible. It is 11:30-12:30 Oct. 28. The $5 fee includes a sack lunch. Reservations are needed. Participation is worth one University of Always In Stitches point. Musical Groups wanted Are you part of a small musical group (or know of one) that might be willing to perform for minutes as part of the shop s Cookies and Carols Day in early December? If so, please Ros@AlwaysInStitches1.com. You don t have to be professional; we re looking for festive. Church ensembles, barbershop quartets and school groups would be perfect. Are you in University? Get the credit you deserve as a participant in University of Always In Stitches. When you re here for a class or event, check in at the cash register to record your attendance. When you re picking up a BOM block, be sure to tell the sales associate you are entitled to points for that, too. A little family history in knitter s every stitch Most people knit to create family heirlooms. Maureen Mo Finnernan knits using family heirlooms. I was in grade school when my mother taught me how to crochet and knit, said Mo, our October Fiber Artist of the month. Like my mother, I didn t like the clicking of the metal needles so I stuck with crocheting. Five years ago, I wanted to knit a cable scarf so, using plastic needles I inherited from my mother-in-law, I did it! She showed her mother that scarf (which Mo insists was full of errors), and her mother gave her some pointers as well as circular nylon knitting needles that Mo s aunt had used. She continued to knit scarves until one day when she visited Always In Stitches for fabric but discovered the Yarn Department. I met Penny and she convinced me to make a vest and come join the knitting class, said Mo of Penny Little, one of the shop s knitting specialists. Since then I ve learned to knit socks, felted purses, sweaters and English patterns. She also discovered square needles but still favors her aunt s nylon ones. Sadly, my mother never got to see my garments. But again like her, I knit every night til the wee hours. I still like to garden, read, sew and crochet, but for now I m addicted to knitting!
