VICTORIAN RAILWAYS FP HORSE BOX Bgie hrse bxes FF7 t FF16 were built at Newprt wrkshps in 1928 and They featured a steel underframe and bar frame bgies, similar t the MM and LL cattle and sheep wagns that were built at abut the same time. FF 7, 10, 11 and 13 were fitted with TT 30 bgies in 1938, t allw their use at passenger train speed. By the 1950s there was less need fr hrsebxes, with FF9 and 11 having their bdies remved t becme flat wagns Q130 and 131 respectively in 1953, while the TT30 bgies frm FF11 were transferred t FF12 and FF8 was scrapped in FF7, 10, 12 and 13 were reclassified FP in July 1956 and the bdy clur changed t passenger car red shrtly afterwards. FF14, 15 and 16 retained their bar frame bgies, but were reclassified FH in 1961, when the letter F became a bgie type speed indicatr. FH 14 t16 were effectively scrapped in 1962 with their underframes being used t build HR159, HR158 and 1HW respectively. FP7, 10, 12 and 13 cntinued in traffic until 1971 when 10, 12 and 13 were withdrawn. FP7 was reclassified VSPY7 in 1979, was subsequently placed n the Histric Vehicles Register and, at the time f writing (May 2011), is stred at Newprt wrkshps. Mdel illustrated has been fitted with cuplers (nt included). General Assembly Ntes The majrity f this kit is brass, therefre the methd f chice fr assembly is sldering. Hwever, this des nt preclude the use f Epxy Resin glues r Cyanacrylate fr assembly. The kit has been designed t make it pssible t entirely assemble it using glues rather than slder. By far the strngest assembly methd is slder. The kit designer highly recmmends the use f slder paste rather than wire fr assembly. It has a number f advantages. It is clean, easy t place small quantities using a pin and because it can be placed befre use f the irn, leaves ne hand free t hld parts. The use f a resistance sldering unit (RSU) r ht air gun is highly recmmended when using paste. If yu are nt cmfrtable with sldering, the next chice wuld be an epxy-resin glue such as Araldite, r finally a medium cure speed super glue. There is n shame in using adhesives t assemble the kit, in fact it is recmmended fr sme parts f the kit that are simply t difficult t slder.

2 Tls Required r Recmmended Sharp knife such as a Stanley knife with snap-ff blades, r a scalpel. Fine pinted tweezers. Aset f needle files. Wire cutters. Needle nse pliers. Asmall bench vise r 'Hld N Fld' fr frming etchings t shape. Pin vice fr hlding twist drills. A150mm 'Mill Smth' file. Glass fibre burnishing tl. Emery paper, 300 grit. Arange f metric twist drills including: 0.35mm, 0.4mm and 2.0m Set f tapered braches fr enlarging hles in sheet metal. The kit des nt cntain paints r cuplers. It is designed t accept Kadee N 5 r N 58 cuplers. Spare Parts There are sme spare parts n the etched brass fret, particularly the very small parts that vanish in a ping and cannt be fund until after the mdel is finished and painted. Assembly Techniques and Tips Remve parts frm the etched fret using a sharp knife with a chpping mtin n a hard surface, such as masnite, t cut thrugh the attachment tags. Clean ff any tag remaining with frm all parts with a needle file. The best sldering irn is a temperature cntrlled irn, but any irn with a rating f 50 t 80 watts is suitable. If using slder wire, chse a fine gauge slder wire with lw flux cntent. We highly recmmend the use f slder paste rather than slder wire. There are a number f verlays featuring rivet r blt detail that must be added. It is ften helpful t 'tin' the back face f these verlays by applying a thin layer f slder while the parts are still part f the etched fret. They can then be applied by 'sweating' them in place. Asheet f 12.5mm MDF r Craftwd is excellent as a wrking surface. It will nt burn t easily, des nt cnduct heat away and saks up mst adhesives. T hld parts in place while sldering, anther trick is t use Blu-Tac. Make a small mund f Blu-Tac and bed the part int it t hld it in place. D nt heat the parts fr t lng hwever as the Blu-Tac will sften. In several places rivets must be frmed where it is nt pssible t etch them in the nrmal way. In these cases it is necessary t press a sharp pinted instrument int the half etched recess n the back surface while the part is supprted n a piece f lead sheet. Several handrails must be frmed frm 0.3mm wire. Abending jig is incrprated in the margin f fret 3. Use pliers t make ne 90 bend in the wire, insert the end in the apprpriate hle and frm the secnd bend ver the ntch in the edge f the sheet. Use a scrap f brass r strip wd that is 0.65mm thick t space each handrail ff the bdy when sldering them in place. IMPORTANT NOTE: As a general rule, half etched lines g twards the inside f a fld. The nly exceptins are places where a part must be flded duble, in which case the half etched line shuld be n the utside f the fld. Underframe structure Refer t figure 1 fr arrangement f the cmpnents. Cmmence cnstructin by pressing ut all the rivets half etched in the side sills and headstcks that frm part f the flr (19). Nw bend the tags at each end f the headstcks at 90, befre bending the side sills and headstcks dwn at 90 t the flr surface and sldering the crners. Frm the centre sill unit int a 'U' shape, lcate the tags alng the edges in the slts etched int the flr and slder it in place. Nte that the tags n the centre sills are nt symmetrical, s this part can nly be installed ne way arund. Slder a bgie pivt bush int each f the hles lcated at either end f the centre sill. 2

3 Tw styles f cupler supprts (15) are prvided. Use the parts labelled LB if the mdel is t be fitted with buffers and the plain parts if nt. Nte that buffers were remved in the mid 1950s and wuld nt be fitted t a vehicle cded FP. Frm the cupler supprts t a 'U' shape. Nw bend the tags n the nut cages (26) at 90 and use them t attach an M2 nut t each f the cupler supprts. Slder the tags in place in the slts etched in the cupler supprt, then file any prjectins flush, s that there is a smth surface fr attaching the cuplers later. Lcate the tags n the cupler supprts in the slts etched in the flr and slder them in place. Frm a 90 bend in each rpe hitch supprt (16) then lcate the tags in the slts etched in the flr adjacent t the centre f each side sill. Slder each supprt in place befre sldering the rpe hitch castings t the supprt. Gas tanks At this pint yu will need t decide what era the mdel is t represent. The FF and FP were riginally illuminated with pintsch gas lamps supplied frm a cylindrical tank lcated n the underframe. In mid t late 1966 the pintsch gas tank was remved and tw LPG cylinders were installed in a small supprt frame hung frm the underframe. Bend the flanges n the transms (35) and brake cylinder supprt (41) at 90. Lcate the apprpriate transms and brake cylinder supprt in the slts in the flr and the centre sill unit, rientated and arranged as shwn n figure 1. Insert the narrw ends f the transm dubler strips (27) int the slts etched in the centre sill unit, bend them dwn at 90 and slder them ver the flanges n the transms. Make sure that the raised rivets alng ne edge f each strip are rientated as shwn n figure 1. Figure Alternative pintsch gas tank and supprts Alternative LPG tanks

4 If the mdel is t be fitted with LPG tanks, lcate the brass casting in the slts etched in the flr and slder in place. A whitemetal casting is supplied fr a pintsch gas tank. Centre this casting in the saddles etched in tw transms and secure with a tuch f lw-melt slder racc. Frm supprt straps fr the tank frm the tw etched strips (22) and secure them t the transm with slder racc. Lcate the brake cylinder casting by the hle in the supprt and slder in place. Use a large file t dress the tp face f the flr smth, especially alng each edge, remving any tags that prject thrugh. This will allw the bdy t sit dwn crrectly later, althugh it is nt a prblem that the nut cages fr the cupler fixings prject abve the flr. Side steps Refer t figure 1. Bend square 'U' shapes frm 0.3mm wire and insert the legs thrugh the hles etched in the side sills. Slder each lp t the flr s that the wires prject thrugh the side sills. Add a further piece f wire thrugh the centre hles fr the side step at the handbrake end. Press ut the rivets in the step brackets (42 & 43) and frm the steps t shape. Take care nt t cnfuse the marks t be pressed ut with the half etched fld lines. Fr the duble step (43), which lcates twards the handbrake end, slder the single bracket t the upper and lwer steps where it flds duble, with the half etched line t the utside f each fld. Only after sldering these jints shuld the rest f the bends, with half etched lines t the inside, be frmed. Thread the step brackets ver the wires installed in the side sills earlier and slder them in place. Trim the wires s that nly abut 0.12mm prjects, representing ne f the fixings fr each bracket. Nw add the bgies, attaching them with M2 x 5mm screws, because the bgies will prvide sme prtectin fr the steps, especially the duble steps at the handbrake end which are quite fragile. Place a washer (13 r 45) under the head f the screw t ensure that the bgie is centred and use sme pliers t make a burr n the screw thread, s that the screw wn't wrk lse, even thugh it isn't tight. End details Refer t figure 2. Frm the brackets t shape fr the cupling hses and slder each bracket t the back f the headstcks. Add a cast brass cupling hse t each bracket and slder frm behind. Bend 'U' shapes frm 0.3mm wire, insert the legs thrugh the hles in the headstcks and slder them t the flr. Press ut the rivets n the back f each bdy bracket (38) and frm the brackets t shape. It is easiest t frm the 90 bends first, bend the small tags at each side back at 180, befre finally making the centre fld at 180. Slip each bracket ver a pair f prjecting wires and slder in place. Trim the wires s that nly abut 0.12mm prjects, representing the ther fixings f each bracket. Tw styles f treads are prvided fr the shunter's steps; a plain wden type (6), fr the perid up t abut 1968, and a mesh style (8) fr 1968 nwards. If using the mesh treads, frm the edges at 90. Press ut the rivets n the back f each shunter's step frame (7) and bend the lwer legs at 90. Slder an apprpriate step tread t each frame and then slder the shunter's step assemblies t the headstcks. The step frame lcates directly ver the hles etched Figure 2. twards the left hand crner f the headstcks. Add Kadee cuplers, either N 5 r N 58, attaching each draft gear bx with an M2 x 5mm screw. 4mm Alternative step treads 3mm 4

5 The FP wagns had bttm perated cuplers, s frm an uncupling lever t the shape shwn n figure 2 frm 0.3mm wire. Secure the handle t the shunter's step frame with a 'U' shaped lp f 0.25mm cpper wire and slder frm behind. The handle can als be sldered t the ther leg f the shunter's step frame, where it passes in frnt, t prvide further reinfrcement. It will help if the inner end f the uncupling lever is secured belw the cupler with a blb f Blu-Tac while the uter end is sldered t the shunter's step. Bdy Refer t figure 3. Cut each side and end (1) frm the fret and press ut the half etched fixings frm the back f each end. Bend the lwer edge f each side at 90, but nte that this is an exceptinal case where the half etched line ges t the utside f the bend. Leave the end flat until after the sides have been detailed as described belw. Bend the dr drip strips (5) at 90, insert the narrw sectin thrugh the slts etched abve each grm's dr and slder them frm behind. Lwer drs Bend sixteen 'L' shaped pieces f 0.4mm wire and insert each ne thrugh a hle etched in the side at the tp crner f each lwer dr. Orientate the sectin that is behind the side s that the leg is hrizntal and pinted twards the centre f the lwer dr, then slder them frm behind. Trim the sectins that prject thrugh the side s that they nly extend abut 0.7mm abve the surface f the side. Insert the narrw end f each lwer dr hinge (31, 33, 34 & 37) int a slt etched at the base f the lwer dr and slder frm behind, s that the hinge prjects ut frm the side at 90. Take care that the different types f hinges are arranged as shwn n figure 3. Cut eight pieces f 0.5mm wire, each 29.5mm lng. Lay each piece f wire abve the prjecting hinges alng the base f a dr, s that an equal amunt prjects beynd a hinge at each end and slder in place. Nw bend the hinges arund the wire and use a piece f wd t pinch each ne dwn clse t the wire and up 44 the face f the dr. The lps in the hinges at each edge f the drs Nte: Turn dr 40 shuld fit ver the prjecting handle thrugh wires sldered in place 5 after installatin earlier. Slder the hinges t the drs Figure mm wire

6 Upper drs Insert a dr handle (23) thrugh each f the lcating slts in the upper drs and slder frm behind. Repeat fr the slts in each f the grm's drs. The excess tag behind each handle can be trimmed ff with a sharp pair f side cutters. Carefully file the area behind the grm's dr smth, s that the windw sash can sit flat later n. Use a pair f pliers with smth jaws t grasp each dr handle and twist thrugh 90, s that the end f the handle is hrizntal. Slder the lwer hinges (28, 29, 30, 32 & 40) t the lwer edge f the upper drs. Take care t align the hles in hinges 29 and 32 with the hles etched in the sides. Nw add the vertical detail strips () t each edge f each upper dr. The raised blt heads n the face f each strip shuld be centred ver the half etched marks n the drs. Slder the upper hinges (36 & 44) t the tp edge f the upper drs. Bdy assembly Refer t figure 4. Bend each end at 90 t the side and bend the narrw strip alng the bttm edge duble, s that it sits in frnt f the end. Frm the tw partitins 'B' t shape and lcate the three shrt tags n ne edge in the three slts etched alng the edge f ne grm's dr, s that the tags prject and represent the dr hinges. Slder bth partitins t ne side. The grm's windw (17) can be psitined in a clsed r pen psitin. Nte that the ntches in ne edge are nt evenly spaced and ensure that the windw sash is rientated as shwn in figure 4. The lwer ntch in ne edge lcates against the centre hinge tag n partitin B fr a clsed windw. If the windw is t be pen, lcate the upper ntch against the centre hinge tag. Slder the windw frame in the desired psitin. Offer up the secnd side/end t the first, taking care t lcate the hinge tags n bth partitins B in the slts in the side. Slder the partitins B t the secnd side. Slder the grm's windws in place n the secnd side. Bend the tags at the tp crners f the tw partitins 'A' at 90 and insert the partitins between the sides, rientated as shwn n figure 4. The tags in the lwer crners lcate in slts etched in the return edge at the base f each side and the tp lcates against the edge f the grm's dr drip strip (10), sldered in place earlier. Slder the partitins in place. Lcate the partitin 'C' in the centre f the bdy, lcating the tags in the bttm edge and tp crners in the slts prvided and slder the partitin in place. Bend the tags in the tp edges f all partitins ver at 90. Finally, slder the sides t the ends at diagnal crners, taking care nt t fill any f the handrail hles with slder. 7 Handrails and end details Refer t figures 3 and 5. Handrails fr the grm's drs, the lwer crners f the ends and the upper side drs need t be made frm 0.30mm wire using the hles marked D, E, and F respectively in the margin f fret 3 t frm them t length. Install the handrails in the hles and slder frm behind. Use a steel ruler t bend the handrails adjacent t the grm's drs ver slightly, s that they stand ff the surface f the side at abut 65, instead f 90, allwing sme clearance fr the dr handle. The FP vehicles were built in tw batches and the end details were different. FP7&10 had handrails and steps fr accessing the rf at bth ends, as shwn n figure 5A. FP12&13 just had a single hrizntal handrail acrss each end, as shwn n figure 5B. Fr FP7&10, bend fur handrail shapes frm pieces f 0.3mm wire using the hle marked 'D' t set the size. The length is a very small amunt t lng, s bend a shallw kink in the centre sectin f each 'U'. Nw insert the ends f these 'U' shaped wires thrugh the hles in each end that lcate the end steps and slder frm behind. Press ut the half etched fixing marks n each end step (25) and bend the step at 90. Thread each step ver a wire prjecting frm the end and slder in place, s that the step tread is hrizntal. Trim the wire s that it nly prjects abut 0.15mm and represents a third fixing fr each step. Bend further handrails t shape, using the hles marked 'B' and 'C' as a guide. Install the handrails in the hles etched in the ends, as shwn n figure 5Aand slder frm behind. Fr FP12&13 bend a shrt piece f 0.3mm wire int an 'L' shape and install it thrugh the hle in the centre f each end and slder frm behind. Trim the end that prjects thrugh the end, s that it prjects 0.65mm frm the surface. Nw frm tw handrails using the hle marked 'A' as a guide, install them acrss each end and slder frm behind. Attach the rail t the stub f wire in the centre with a tiny drp f rubber 'cntact cement' applied with a pin. Slder a tail disc (24), either pen r flded, t each end. Nte that the tail disc wuld nrmally nly be pen at the rear end f a train. Slder tw lamp irns (3) t each end, s that the middle f each irn is centred ver the hles etched twards the bttm and abut 5mm either side f the centreline. Slder tw further lamp irns t each side, s that each is centred ver a half etched mark in the planked area adjacent t the grm's dr, as shwn n figure 3. Figure 5A. Bend kink s Figure 5B. that wire fits 25 spacing f hles in the end FP7&10 FP12& Alternative parts Rf Refer t figure 6. The strips f fret waste between the sides, clerestry sides and the centre sill unit n fret 1 are carefully dimensined t g behind the penings f the clerestry sides (2). Cut this waste int eight sectins 31mm lng and fur sectins 10mm lng. These pieces f brass must be sldered behind the clerestry sides very carefully, with the bttm edges flush and the tp edges just cvering the penings in the clerestry sides, s that this extra layer wn't interfere with the partitins and the placement f the carlines. Slder a 10mm length behind the pening abve each grm's cmpartment and then each f the 31mm sectins behind a grup f three penings, between the ends and the psitins crrespnding t the partitins. Nw slder the clerestry sides t the bdy, with the tags n each end f the clerestry side interlcking with the ntches in the ends. The tabs extending frm the tp f each partitin, which represent verhanging carlines, shuld sit in ntches in the tp edge f the clerestry side. Place individual carlines (20) in the remaining ntches and slder them in place. 7

8 The upper deck f the clerestry rf has been rlled t shape. Fr FP7&10 bend tw handrails t shape, using the hle marked 'D' in the margin f fret 3. Lcate these handrails in the hles at each end f the upper rf deck and slder frm underneath, then trim and file any prjectin smth n the underside. Place the upper deck n the rf structure, with the tags n tp f each end lcated in the slts etched in the upper rf. Slder the upper rf deck in place frm underneath. A small fillet at each partitin and n the inner face f each end is sufficient. Slder a curved strip (5A) n tp f each end, up against the lwer edge f the upper deck. A piece f curved plystyrene sheet has been prvided fr the lwer decks f the rf. Cut tw sectins each 157.5mm lng x 10mm wide and check the fit against the bdy structure. Attach each lwer deck sectin with ACC, applied frm underneath. Use a sharp knife and carefully scrape alng the uter edge f each lwer rf deck, s that the edge is vertical and hangs ver the side by abut 0.5mm. 2 5A Figure 6. Rinse in clear water and set aside t dry. Paint the underframe with black self-etch primer r, alternatively a 50:50 mix f black and grey. Paint the bdy with grey self-etch primer, fllwed by a cat f passenger car red. Paint the windw sashes f the grm's drs a light grey and the rf, including the sides f the clerestry, mid brwn such as Humbrl matt dark earth. The edges f the lwer decks f the rf shuld remain passenger car red. Apply the decals as per the lettering diagram and seal with a cat f clear flat varnish after the decal film has dried. Glaze the grm's dr windws with small pieces f clear plastic, held in place withacc r cntact cement. Final assembly There are fur small tags alng the inside f each side. Bend each tag dwn at 90 and psitin the bdy n tp f the underframe, feeding the tags thrugh the slts etched int the tp face f the underframe. If yu have lettered a grm's dr with the 'BRAKE' decal, make sure that it is psitined abve the duble steps n the underframe. Fld each tag ver, t secure the bdy t the underframe. 8
