3 Steel Bed Frame (#SBF) Prject Start-U(2 Familiarize yurself with all f the cmpnents in the Steel Bed Frame and mechanism cartns, as well as thrughly study this manual s yu may plan the steps required t cmplete this prject. Study a" illustratins and plan drawings. Make sure that the space available is adequate fr the specified dimensins f the bed cabinet, bth in the pen and clsed psitins (see cut list pages t crss check dimensins). Panels shuld be 3/4" ply cre. Particle bard is acceptable but with mre attentin given t assembly prcedures and handling. This is discussed further in this manual. Handles t pull the bed pen are nt prvided. Select these frm yur lcal decrative hardware supplier. Have them n site at the time f assembly. There are nine lcatins fr springs. f the bed requires an even number f springs, d nt use the center hle (#5 frm the tp). f the bed requires and dd number f springs, start with the center hle (#5 frm the tp) and wrk utward in bth directins evenly. Hk the springs s the pen ends are facing utward. Yu may have t gently pry up the tensin arm and slide the spring under and snap them int place in the prper hle, matching the same numbered hle frm the tp f the mechanism back plate. Yu shuld have an equal number f springs n each side f the center hle. Use the same number f springs and the same layut n bth the left and right mechanisms. 10 Assembling the Bed Cabinet Fr easier final wall munt yu shuld assemble bed cabinet in the rm where it will be used. Be sure Lift Mechanisms are securely installed.. Lcate the munting psitin-f the headbard marking the left and right side panels 2" frm the flr and 3" in frm the back edge f the panels. Nte frm the plans #6 & #7 that this munts the bttm edge f the headbard ut 3" frm the back r wall edge f the Side Panels. Use the " x " x 3/4" (2 each side) munting brackets. Be sure the tp bracket is set lw enugh nt t prtrude beynd the back f the cabinet. Use #8 x 3/4" Pan head Screws. The Headbard lcatin may vary slightly; just be sure it is secure and at the apprximate 3" angle frm the back edge. 2. Use Angle Brackets t assemble Bttm Stretcher and Kick in psitin shwn in plan #6 & #7. Use tw Angle Brackets n each end. 3. Attach Tp Stretcher as shwn in plan #6 & #7. Be sure back edge f the Stretcher is flush with back f Side Panels and inset " frm frnt f Side Panels, and 2" dwn frm tp f Side Panels t match the height f the Facia. Facia sits n tp f Tp Stretcher flush with frnt edge and flush with tp end f Side Panels. 12 Attach Bed Cabinet Securely t Wall Hints: f the rm is carpeted yu may raise the kick up t /4" t clear the carpet. Mre than /4" will bstruct the peratin f the bed. Yu mayr may nt wish t remve the Base Bard t allw the Bed Cabinet t fit flush against the wall. f yu d remve the Base Bard, save fr later trim and replacement. f yu d nt wish t remve the Base Bard, yu may use a shim r filler strip f the same thickness at the tp between the cabinet and the wall.. Place cabinet against wall. Make sure the cabinet is level and square. Measure diagnally t be sure f square. Bed will nt perate if cabinet is nt square. Check als fr square frm frnt t back as well as side t side. Use shims where necessary. 2. Prir t placing cabinet against the wall, lcate 3 studs r ther wall frame members at the level f the Tp Stretcher panel (tp f bed). Alert: The cabinet must be secured t studs r ther wall structural members using 2" x 2" L-Brackets. f the wall is nt a wd stud wall, use metal stud screws, tggle blts r cncrete expansin blts if necessary. 3. Nw that the cabinet is square and plumb, use tw #8 x 2" flat head wd screws in each f three 2" x 2" brackets t attach t studs at the tp level f the Tp Stretcher (see Drawing 9.). Re-check square and plumb and then secure 2" x 2" L-Brackets t Tp Stretcher with #8 x 3/4" wd screws. Attach warning label t tp f cabinet. Attach three Bumper Buttns t frnt edge f Tp Stretcher. 14 Assemble the Bed Face Unit Step : Lay the Bed Face Panels dwn n a nn-scratch surface such as a carpet r blanket. Step 2: Cmpletely assemble the 4 Frame Sectins with the crner brackets and the 3/6" x /2" black blts prvided. Refer t Drawing 2 t prperly place the leg stps at uter right and left bttm hles at the ft f the bed frame. Step 3: Psitin the bed frame n the bed face panels. With the Head Frame sectin flush with the head end f the Bed Face Panels. Refer t Drawing. Carefully attach the Bed Frame s it is centered n the Bed Face Panels; yu will have apprximately 5/6" space frm the bed frame t the panel edges right and left and at the bed ft. Nte: t is very imprtant t have the Bed Frame centered n the Bed Face Panels. Any errr will be nticed in the vertical sight lines when the bed is clsed. Step 4: Three steel stiffeners are prvided fr all beds. These ntched stiffeners shuld be lcated and attached t divide the Bed Face length int fur equal sectins. Use cautin nt t damage raised panels by putting screws in recessed areas. Step 5: Attach the Nyln Web Strap apprximately 8" frm the ft f the bed. The Straps help secure the mattress in the vertical psitin. 4

15 Setting the Lift Mechanism Hlding ne ft against the bttm frnt edge f the side panel and using the 3" PVC tube, lever the tensin arm ut until yu can set the arm lck t the hex nut at the hle A (see drawing.). This is the hex nut at the tp frnt crner f the mechanism. Cautin: f pssible have a helper assist in the setting f the mechanism and lading f the bed face panel. D Nt reach behind the tensin arm when yu are ding the setting prcedure. 16 nstall the Bed Face Panel Unit. nsert the tw Allen Head Blts frm the utside f the frame thrugh Hle # (see drawing 4, 4th hle frm end) use 5/6" Nylck nuts and securely tighten. 2. nsert tw 5/6" Hex Head Blts frm the utside f the frame thrugh Hle #3 and put 5/6" Nylck nuts n these blts nly finger tight atthis time. 3. Stand the Bed Face Panel in vertical psitin between the tensin arms, lift evenly until the blt in Hle #3 drps in the sltted end f each tensin arm. When all blts are securely tightened, yu may tilt the panel utward t apprximately 45 degrees t release the arm lcks. Yu will hear a click as they disengage. CAUTON: Hld the Face Panel securely, D Nt let it slam shut. Balance is nt achieved until the mattress is laded in the bed. Leveling f the bed cabinet is essential. Check the level bth side t side and frnt t back. Prper leveling will facilitate prper clsure and exact sight lines f the fit f the Face Panel t the Cabinet. CAUTON: f pssible have a helper assist in the setting f the mechanism and lading f the Bed Face Panel. D Nt reach behind the tensin arm when yu are ding the setting prcedure 6

17 nstall Handles. Legs, Mechanism Cvers, & Mattress. Psitin and secure handles fr ease f peratin. Measure dwn apprximately 36" frm the panel tp t the tp f the handles. 2. nstall leg~ with the washers n the inside f the Rails and the Nyln washer n the utside, Tghten nut t have a small amunt f frictin when leg assembly is rtated frm the up t dwn psitin.
