Sand, seal surface as desired and sand again. Float using the 1/2 flat unless otherwise noted, mop with the 1/2 mop, as needed. Step by Step Painting Initial Instructions: 1) Base the banner in Fawn, while wet, tip the brush in Bleached Sand and streak through, brush blend the application. The edges of the banner are Lamp Black. 2). Apply the pattern for the stripes (as a guideline) and using the 1/2 Scotch Brand Magic Tape, tape off the stripes as shown, every other one. (Rub the tape down well, so no paint gets underneath.) 3.) Thin down Rookwood Red and apply a wash of color over the exposed stripes (will be every other one). *Tip: Use the mop brush to soften your application. Remove tape. 4.) The blue stripes are painted using a wash of Uniform Blue and the 8 flat; so thin the paint down with water and then using the flat brush fully loaded in the wash, stroke the stripes on between the red stripes. The green stripes running horizontally (under the bear, as for the bear outfit) are painted using the 6 flat and thin Plantation Pine. 5.) Let the washes dry and then to give it a more aged appearance, sand over the stripes (so they look more faded). 6.) Using the 6 Domed Round loaded in Fawn, and tipping on edge, tip into Bleached Sand. Tap stipple to blend on your palette, and then stipple over the bears face. As you move into the muzzle area, tip the brush a bit heavier into the Bleached Sand so that the muzzle comes up a bit brighter.(avoid the eyes and nose if you can, but don t stress it as you can always apply the pattern if you need.) 7.) Use the 1 round (and the liner for the finer lines), to add the eyes, lashes, nose line, brow lines and mouth with Lamp Black. Use the 6 filbert to fill in the nose, while wet, tip the dirty brush into a touch of Bleached Sand and softly stroke across to highlight (start on the left side, ease up as you work right). Fill in the snowman with Bleached Sand; the star with Uniform Blue.

3 Beary Christmas ~ Page 2 Shading & Detail Background and Bear s outfit: 1.) Float the red stripes with Rookwood Red; (if you want it a little bit more perky, you can float Crimson Tide also). Float with Uniform Blue on the blue stripes. Float Burnt Umber over all the stripes, including the bear s outfit; deepen with a dirty brush into Lamp Black. 2.) Drybrush using Bleached Sand in the open areas of the background (away from the shadows) gradually increase the brightness by tipping the brush into a bit of Warm White (load the brush and then wipe out most of the color onto a dry section of your paper towel). 3.) The bear s outfit has a bow tie and fine lines running through the stripe, with Lamp Black, dot with a stylus on the intersections, using the same color. 4.) Add the blanket stitching along the edges of the banner with Lamp Black, using the fine liner. Bear: 1.) Float the shading on the bear with Burnt Umber. Deepen in the darkest areas by dirty brushing into Lamp Black. 2.) Drybrush in the open areas using the 8 ODB and Bleached Sand; brighten in a couple areas by touching into a bit of Warm White (again, scrub out most of the color onto a dry paper towel). Drybrush also over the nose beginning on the left side working right; soften up as you move across the nose. 3.) Float on the bottom of the eyes with a soft side-load of Bleached Sand, using the 8 flat. Repeat with a smaller float of Uniform Blue. Line the highlights in the eye with Warm White and the fine liner. 4.) Using the 6 ODB and Crimson Tide drybrush scrub over the cheeks and the lower lip (soft!). Snowman and Star on Top: 1.) Shade the snowman with a small side-load of Burnt Umber, using the 8 flat. Highlight with Warm White; tint down the right side with Uniform Blue. Line the features, bowtie and buttons with Lamp Black. The arms are Lamp Black, tip into Bleached Sand to highlight. The nose is a dot of Crimson Tide. The right cheek only is softly applied by wetting the area and dabbing a bit of Crimson Tide; soften with your finger or mop. 2.) The star is shaded with a brush mix of Uniform Blue + Lamp Black; touch into a bit of Rookwood Red and repeat shade. Float Bleached Sand (8 flat) over the right side. Float around the star and on the left side of the star with Milk Chocolate. Line the star s blanket stitching with Warm White. 3.) Line the ribbon on the bear head with the liner and Lamp Black. The little stroke leaves on the bear and snowman are Plantation Pine, using the 3 round. Float under the snowman with a side-load of Warm White. Final Details: 1.) BEARY CHRISTMAS lettering is stroked on with lightly thinned Lamp Black; use the 2 flat to pull the main vertical flowing strokes, use the fine liner to add the finer lines of the lettering. Drybrush through the center of the lettering with Bleached Sand, #6 ODB. 2.) The little stroke leaves on the lettering, #3 round, Plantation Pine. The berry dots are Crimson Tide. Float around berries with same color. 3.) Using an old flat (or the 8) side-load the Snow Tex in the brush and softly float (in a tapping motion) over the bear head, star, snowman and top of banner edges. DecoArt Glamour Dust Glitter Paint (suggested placement of the color): Sizzling Red: I side-load floated this on the red stripes, tap on berries. Sapphire Blue: I floated this on the star. Black Ice: Float this on the nose and the lettering. Finishing Instructions Erase remaining graphite. Varnish as desired. XO, Jamie
