2 mermaid time approximately 21/2-3 hours brushes: 4 3/4" Flat No. 2 Round No. 6 Bright No. 12 Bright colors: 8 Bright Red Cobalt Blue Chrome Yellow Deep Red Phthalo Green Raw Sienna Titanium White Violet 1 step one Use ¾" Flat Brush to mix (8) parts Phthalo Green with (1) part Titanium White. Use mix to paint perimeter of canvas, using broad circular strokes. Blend small amounts of Titanium White into wet paint while working inward, creating gradient. Rinse brush. Let dry completely. tip: Use hand-held hairdryer to speed up drying times. transfer pattern Trace and transfer pattern onto painted canvas. Refer to methodology for detailed instructions.
3 2 3 step two Use No. 6 Bright Brush to mix (4) parts Titanium White with (1) part Bright Red. Use mix to paint shadows in shell. Save mix for next bullet. Blend Titanium White into wet paint to create shell segments. Save brush. Use same brush to add (2) parts Violet to mix from bullet 1. Use new mix to deepen shadows and definition in shell. Refer to photo. Rinse brush. Use No. 6 Bright Brush and Titanium White to paint highlights on tops and centers of shell segments. Refer to photo. Rinse brush. step three Use No. 6 Bright Brush to mix (4) parts Titanium White with small amount of Raw Sienna. Use mix to paint mermaid s face, arm, and hand. While paint is wet, blend small amounts of Raw Sienna onto face, arm, and hand to create shading. Refer to photo. ( No. 2 Round Brush can also be used for detail areas) Rinse brush(es).
4 4 5 step four Use No. 12 Bright Brush to mix (4) parts Deep Red, (2) parts Violet, and small amount of Titanium White. Use mix to paint darkest areas of mermaid hair. Refer to photo. Save remaining mix for STEP NINE. Rinse brush. step five Use No. 6 Bright Brush to mix (2) parts Violet with (4) parts Titanium White. Use mix to paint shadows on left half of tail fin. While paint is wet, blend Titanium White to create shading. Refer to photo. Repeat with right side of tail fin. Rinse brush. Use No. 6 Bright Brush to mix (2) parts Violet and small amount of Titanium White. Use mix to paint deeper shadows in tail fin and where tail fin meets tail. Refer to photo. Rinse brush.
5 6 7 step six Use No. 12 Bright Brush to mix (1) part Titanium White with (8) parts Deep Red. Use mix to paint mermaid hair, following flow of hair and painting thinly over previous layer, allowing some of darker color to show through. Refer to photo. Rinse brush. step seven Use ¾" Flat Brush to mix (2) parts Titanium White with (1) part Cobalt Blue. Use mix to paint mermaid tail. Rinse brush. While paint is wet, use ¾" Flat Brush and Titanium White to paint highlights on mermaid tail, blending until smooth. Refer to photo. Rinse brush. While paint is wet, use ¾" Flat Brush and Cobalt Blue to paint shadows on mermaid tail, blending until smooth. Refer to photo. Rinse brush.
6 8 9 step eight Use No. 2 Round Brush and Titanium White to paint individual strands in hair, using thin strokes on top of head and other highlighted areas and contouring to shape of hair. Refer to photo. Rinse brush. Let dry. Use No. 6 Bright Brush to mix (2) parts Chrome Yellow, (4) parts Bright Red, and (1) part Titanium White. Use mix to paint highlights in mermaid hair using contouring strokes, streaking into dark areas, and covering Titanium White strands. Refer to photo. Rinse brush. step nine Use No. 2 Round Brush and Cobalt Blue to paint scales in shadows of mermaid tail, using short, curved strokes. Refer to photo. Rinse brush. Repeat bullet 1 with same brush and Titanium White to paint scales in highlights of mermaid tail. Refer to photo. Rinse brush. Use No. 2 Round Brush and saved mix from STEP FOUR to paint mermaid eye. (If pattern line cannot be seen through paint, refer to photo for placement.) Rinse brush. Use No. 2 Round Brush to mix (4) parts water with (1) part Titanium White. Use wash to paint background bubbles. Refer to photo. Wipe brush. Use same brush and Titanium White to paint foreground bubbles. Refer to photo. Rinse brush.
7 canvas painting techniques method ology pattern transfer REACH: Stretching or extending instructed paint around subject or design element. HIGHLIGHT: Adding lighter colors to subject to represent or imply light source in painting. SHADE: Adding darker color to subject to give painting depth or shadows. Position pattern on canvas. Secure with tape at top. Slide transfer paper, carbon side down, under pattern. Use stylus or pen to trace over pattern. Remove. brush basics ONE PART: Brushful of paint, using brush instructed. SMALL AMOUNT: Just dab of paint on instructed brush. DOUBLE-LOAD: Placing two Social Artworking paint shades on same instructed brush. CORNER OF BRUSH: Dip one side of brush in instructed Social Artworking color. HORIZON LINE: Area in painting where two elements of background meet (i.e. wall and table or sky and ground). CONTOUR: Using instructed paint and brush, painting within outer edge of subject or design element. OUTLINE: Painted line that marks boundaries of object or design element. MIXING: Using brush instructed, combine Social Artworking paints together on palette, mixing well to create new shade. RINSE BRUSH: Thoroughly remove paint from brush with water. Dry with paper towel to remove excess water. USING SAME BRUSH: Brush used in previous step, without rinsing. ADD WATER TO BRUSH TO INCREASE FLUIDITY: When creating fine detail, adding water will allow more control. brush-strokes VISIBLE BRUSH-STROKES: Marks of movement of paint on instructed brush can be seen on canvas. HORIZONTAL: Mark or movement of brush across canvas, parallel to ground or floor. VERTICAL: Mark or movement of brush, moving in up-or-down direction on canvas. LONG BRUSH-STROKES: Applying paint with instructed brush in long, continuous motion. SHORT BRUSH-STROKES: Applying paint with instructed brush in quick, choppy motion. QUICK BRUSH-STROKES: Applying paint with instructed brush in free, loose motion. HORIZONTAL VERTICAL LOOSELY OUTLINE: Relaxed painted outline. WASH: Adding water to paint to create thin, transparent layer. LAYER: Apply new color of paint over existing color. FILL: Using instructed brush and paint, completely cover designated area of painting. BLEND: Combining instructed color with previously painted step, while wet. BLENDING ON CANVAS: Applying colors on double-loaded brush to canvas, by blending. VISIT US AT DRYBRUSH: Using clean, dry brush and very small amount of paint to create rough, transparent layer. STIPPLE: To create small dots of paint. PULL PAINT: Using instructed brush, spread paint on canvas, while wet. REPEAT STEP TO DARKEN: Decrease transparency by applying additional coats of paint. REFER TO PHOTO: As seen in photo provided, add instructed step to canvas.
