Allow filler to dry completely. Note that leaving the box slightly rough might give it a more rustic appearance, if that is your preference. Sand well, then tack to remove sanding dust. Apply Multi Purpose Sealer to the inside and outside of the box. Hammer a sawtooth hanger on the top back of the box. PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS Background: Blue Violet: Base inside and outside of the box. Periwinkle: Stipple, then dry brush, over the top and sides of the box. Payne s Grey/Primary Blue: (Equal mixture) Stencil the top and sides of the box with the polka dot stencil (use the larger polka dots in the stencil set). Float around the sides, edges, and bottom of the box. Dura Clear Matte Varnish: Apply one coat of varnish over the top and sides of the box. Allow to dry thoroughly. (The purpose of applying varnish to the box at this point is so that if you should stamp a snowflake onto the box that does not please you because it has not left a crisp, clear impression or it has been stamped in the wrong spot, you can quickly wipe away the stamped snowflake with a damp paper towel before the paint dries. The varnish creates a barrier between the background and the stamped snowflake and protects the background stippling and stenciled polka dots from being damaged by wiping with too much pressure when/if trying to remove a stamped snowflake.) 2 artistsclub.com

3 A few notes about stamping using paint as the ink : Tap the paint onto the raised edges of the stamp with paint that has been slightly thinned with water, and that has been loaded onto a white cosmetic sponge. Working quickly, apply the paint evenly over the stamp. Gently press the stamp onto the surface you desire to stamp using a firm pressure (but do not press too hard). It will probably take a little practice to get correct feel of stamping; try it out several times first on scratch paper. After stamping, lift the stamp straight up, being careful not to slide or twist the stamp when lifting it upward. If you are not pleased with the stamped image, quickly wipe off with a dampened paper towel. Clean the stamps immediately after use with warm water, dish soap, and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Set aside to dry. If paint is allowed to dry in the stamp, it will be ruined for future use. Warm White, Stamps, and Clear Handle: Apply one of the stamps to the clear handle. Thin Warm White paint slightly with a few drops of water and mix well. Lightly pounce the cosmetic sponge into the paint, then tap a couple of times on a paper towel to remove the excess. Lightly tap the sponge, loaded with paint, onto the stamp. Using consistent pressure, apply stamps in a random fashion on the top and sides of the box. Note that it is not necessary that the full snowflake appear on the box. You may use as much or as little of the stamp as you like. Allow paint to dry thoroughly before transferring the elf pattern onto the top of the box. Clean the stamps immediately after use by running under warm water and scrubbing with a soft-bristled toothbrush and dish washing soap. Allow the stamps to thoroughly dry before storing. Basecoats: Dusty Rose: Base face, neck, and ears. Melon: Base the top of the hat and shoulders (as an undercoat for Cinnamon Drop). Cinnamon Drop: Base over the Melon on the hat and shoulders. Shoreline/Warm White: (Equal mixture) Base the pompom and hatband; base the collar (excluding the trim). Shoreline: Base the bird. Bright Green: Base the bird s hat, thin trim on collar, and holly leaves. Summer Squash: Base the lace trim on the collar, the hatband on the bird s hat, bird s feet and beak, and the stripes on the bird s hat. Face: Sugared Peach: Stipple, then dry brush, the highlights on the face (on forehead, top of nose, top of mouth, chin, sides of face, and top of ears. Mix a bit of Warm White into the brush and brighten highlights by dry brushing a bit more over the Sugared Peach. Float with a mixture of Sugared Peach and Warm White on the top of the ears, top of the nose, chin, above mouth, and sides of face. Dusty Rose/Melon/Light Cinnamon: (Create mixture of Dusty Rose with 1 or 2 drops of Melon and Light Cinnamon added.) Dry brush the center of the ears, bottom of nose, bottom of chin, on neck below face, on forehead below the hatband, inside the ears, bottom of the ears, and bottom sides of face. Float around the eyes, on the forehead below the hatband, inside of ears, bottom of ears, bottom of nose, below mouth, below chin, on neck below the head, and bottom of ears. Lightly dry brush cheeks. Melon/Light Cinnamon: (Equal mixture) Dry brush cheeks and inside of ears. Thin paint with water and apply a washy basecoat to the lips. Cinnamon Drop: Dry brush the center of the cheeks and the bottom of the inside of the ears. Float the bottom of the upper and lower lips. Warm White: Base eyes. Primary Blue: Thin paint with water. Very sheerly float the outside edges of the eyes. Shoreline: Float the iris in the eyes. Shoreline/Primary Blue/Light Cinnamon: (Shoreline, mixed with 1 or 2 drops of Primary Blue and Light Cinnamon) Float the iris to deepen color. Soft Black: Base pupils in eyes. Warm White: Base the center of the pupils. Dusty Rose/Soft Black: (Equal mixture) Thin paint with enough water to make a wash (transparent color) and base the inside of the mouth. Hat and Dress: Pumpkin: Stipple, then dry brush the center and top of the hat to highlight. Stipple the shoulders to highlight. Float the tip of the hat (by the pom-pom), along the top of the hat, and along the sides of the shoulders. Napa Red: Dry brush around the bottom of the hat (next to the hatband), next to the bird, on the top of the hat where it dips downward, and along the bottom of the shoulders. Float over those areas to deepen shading; float on the shoulders against the lace on the collar. Warm White: Apply dots to the hat. Allow dots to dry. Napa Red: Float the hat again where you floated before. This will help to set in the look of the dots on the hat. artistsclub.com 3

4 Shoreline/Primary Blue: (Equal mixture) Float around edges of the pom-pom, hatband, and on the collar along the top and against the neck. Float around the holly leaves and berry. Primary Blue: Thin with paint to create a wash. Float over the blue shading on the pom-pom, hatband, and collar to deepen the shading. Float around the holly leaves and berry. Warm White: Loosely stipple over the hatband, pompom, and collar. When stippling over the pom-pom and hatband, very lightly extend the stippling over the edges so that a bit of it extends onto the blue background. This will help the pom-pom and hatband to look a little bit soft and furry. Thin paint slightly with water and line short, irregular lines around the pom-pom and hatband, that extend beyond and slightly onto the dark blue background. Cinnamon Drop: Base the berry on the hatband. Lemonade: Dry brush the center of the holly leaves. Float the top of the leaves and the center vein. Float the top of the green trim on the collar. Bluegrass Green/Forest Green: (Equal mixture) Float to shade the green trim on the collar and the holly leaves. Deepen shading with sheer floats of Forest Green. Pumpkin: Float the top of the holly berry to highlight. Napa Red: Float the bottom of the holly berry to shade. Primary Yellow: Shade yellow lace on collar. Mix in a tiny bit of pumpkin into the Primary Yellow, and float to deepen shading. Bird: Warm White/Shoreline: (65% Warm White/35% Shoreline mixture) Dry brush the center of the bird s face and body, and each feather in the wings and tail. Float to highlight the feathers in the tail and wings. Shoreline/Laguna/Primary Blue: (Equal mixture of Shoreline and Laguna with 1 or 2 drops of Primary Blue added) Float to shade bird. Pumpkin: Float top of heart to highlight. Soft Black: Base pupils in eyes. Warm White: Dot pupils in eyes. Hair: Summer Squash/Primary Yellow/Light Cinnamon: Place drops of each color side-by-side on palette. Dampen a 10/0 liner brush, and drag through each of the three colors. Apply wavy hair, allowing the colors to streak and blend together as you paint. Glasses: Soft Black: Base the glasses. Warm White: Using a very sheer float, float highlights on top of glasses and on the bottom left side of glasses. Bright Green: Dot corner of glasses. Lettering: Bright Green: Base lettering. Lemonade: Dry brush and float the top portion of the lettering. Bluegrass Green/Forest Green: Float with both colors to shade bottom of lettering. Cinnamon Drop: Outline the lettering. Lining: Soft Black: Line everything with Soft Black. FINISHING Varnish: Dura Clear Matte Varnish: Apply two coats of varnish, allowing to dry well between applications. Glitter: Glamour Dust Ice Crystal: Brush over bird s hat, holly and berry, glasses, lace on collar, and lettering. Warm White: Base bird s eyes. Lemonade: Dry brush the hat to highlight. Bluegrass Green/Forest Green: (Equal mixture) Float to shade the bird s hat. Deepen shading with sheer floats of Forest Green. Primary Yellow: Float to shade the bird s hatband, beak, feet, and yellow stripes on hat. Add a bit of Pumpkin to the Primary Yellow and float again to deepen shading. Cinnamon Drop: Base heart on bird. 4 artistsclub.com
