The brush must be dry. When Drybrushing, I load my paint from a dry surface, not a wet palette as the moisture will get into the brush and make the paint go on smudgy. I also keep an old towel handy; it is great for cleaning the brush between colors. To start, load the brush by tipping it into the first color, blend out on palette paper then wipe and excess paint off on a paper towel. Lightly scrub the surface to apply the color. Use the brush on 1

3 its side and scrub side to side or up and down. Start soft then press harder depending how much color you need. The harder you press, the more color you will get. The first drybrush coat should allow some of the background to still show through, additional colors should cover less area that the first coat. Clean the brush as best you can on your old towel, then pick up the next color. Apply in the same manner using less. Float / Shade: I always float my color with the angular shaders. Mop to soften with a Mop. I shade around my design elements before basecoating; I like the softer look I get when I do this. Unless other wise indicated, I shade around the entire shape and deepen in corners and under design elements for more depth. Line: Unless otherwise stated, all lining is done with the #10/0 Liner and the paint watered down to an inklike consistency. Preparation: Basecoat the wreaths and the pinecones (2 ornaments) with Espresso. Paint over the Espresso with a wash of Soft Black. Let dry. Basecoat all the leaves with Mint Julip. Paint over all the leaves with awash of Mistletoe. Let dry. Repeat with a wash of Hauser Dark Green Basecoat the berries with Bright Salmon. Wash with Napa Red. Let Dry. Drybrush all with Light Buttermilk. Painting Instructions: Note: Refer to the color photo for shading and detail placement. Backgrounds: Blue - Basecoat with Whispering Turquoise. Shade with Victorian Blue. Drybrush with Blue Chiffon. Purple - Basecoat with Wisteria. Shade with Grape Juice. Drybrush with Pink Chiffon. Green - Basecoat with Mint Julip. Shade with Mistletoe. Drybrush with Lemonade. Pink - Basecoat with Bright Salmon. Shade with Watermelon Slice. Drybrush with Pink Chiffon. Trace on patterns 2

4 3 Owls: Blue - Basecoat with Whispering Turquoise. Shade with Victorian Blue. Drybrush with Blue Chiffon. Deepen shading with Prussian Blue. Dot the heart with Watermelon Slice. Basecoat the hat with Watermelon Slice. Shade with Cinnamon Drop. Highlight with Pink Chiffon. Deepen shading with Napa Red. Dot the hat with Pink Chiffon. Stipple the hat brim and pompom with Light Buttermilk. Shade with Whispering Turquoise. Stipple highlights with Warm White. Line the string and bow with Lamp Black. Purple - Basecoat with Wisteria. Shade with Grape Juice. Drybrush with Pink Chiffon Deepen shading with Dioxazine Purple. Dot the owl with Pink Chiffon. Basecoat the scarf and hat with Mint Julip. Shade with Mistletoe. Highlight with Lemonade. Deepen shading with Hauser Dark Green. Line the stripes with Victorian Blue. Over stroke a highlight with Whispering Turquoise. Stipple the hat brim and pompom with Light Buttermilk. Shade with Whispering Turquoise. Stipple highlights with Warm White. Green - Basecoat with Mint Julip. Shade with Mistletoe. Drybrush with Lemonade Deepen shading with Hauser Dark Green. Dot the owl with Lemonade. Basecoat the scarf with Wisteria. Shade with Grape Juice. Highlight with Pink Chiffon. Deepen shading with Dioxazine Purple. Line the stripes with Watermelon Slice. Over stroke a highlight with Pink Chiffon. Pink - Basecoat with Watermelon Slice. Shade with Cinnamon Drop. Drybrush with Bright Salmon. Deepen shading with Napa Red. Dot the owl with Pink Chiffon. Basecoat the scarf with Whispering Turquoise. Shade with Victorian Blue. Highlight with Blue Chiffon. Deepen shading with Prussian Blue. Line the stripes with Grape Juice. Slice. Over stroke a highlight with Wisteria. Owl Eyes and Beak - Basecoat the eyes with Light Buttermilk. Shade the bottoms with Whispering Turquoise. High-

5 light the tops with Warm White. Dot the eyeballs with Lamp Black. Dot a highlight with Warm White. Base the beaks with Mustard Seed. Shade with Canyon Orange. Highlight with Light Buttermilk. Fences and Branches: Fence - Basecoat with Espresso. Shade with Soft Black. Highlight with Light Buttermilk. Branches - Base the branches with the round brush loaded with Espresso tipped in Soft Black. Line the greens with Hauser Dark Green, then Mistletoe. Finish with Mint Julip. Finishing: Outline as desired with Lamp Black. Drybrush the wreath frame, leaves, berries and Pinecones with Warm White. Drybrush Snow Tex onto the leaves, pinecones and the wreath border. Add Snow - Use the DecoArt Ultra-Fine Writer on your Snow Titanium White to add the snow. Use the tip to pull some of the paint to look like icicles. Sprinkle with Glamour Dust while wet. Line and dot the Snowflakes with the same. Dot the hat brims with the white and quickly sprinkle with Glamour Dust. Finish with several light coats of Americana Acrylic Spray Sealer/Finisher Matte. 4
