The pallet does have a rough surface, but there could be a crack or two that could need attention by filling with a bit of wood filler. Lightly sand; wipe off with a lint-free cloth. Basecoating the Palette Box 2. To basecoat, use a dampened wool sponge, squeeze out the excess water, pick up the Vintage Effect Wash Light Purple on the sponge, dance over the entire box. Allow to dry. If desired, apply a second coat (I applied two coats). Distressed Harlequin Stenciling 3. With the Distressed Harlequin stencil and purple mixture (Purple Pizzazz + Grape Juice 2:1), randomly stencil along the edges of the surface; using the large stencil brush. Position the stencil on the surface; refer to photo for placement. Secure with the Frog Tape or hold with your fingers. Load the large stencil brush with a bit of purple mixture, swirl the brush on a blue shop towel to remove excess. Apply color in a circular motion one direction and then in a circular motion in the other direction (changing directions frequently) over the stencil. Fill in some of the design fully and leave other areas incomplete. When completed, this application should have a slight distressed appearance. If it is too solid or perfect, simply use a moist piece of the blue shop towel with a little Faux Glazing Medium, to gently rub away some of the excess color. Carefully remove stencil by holding one end with your fingers and lifting the opposite end. Repeat steps, randomly stenciling along the surface edges. Clean stencil and brush immediately; using the DecoMagic Cleaner 2 artistsclub.com

3 Stamping Snowflakes 4. Place the larger snowflake from the Winter White Cling Stamps on the clear handle, pounce Snow White over the stamp; using the cosmetic wedge. Then randomly stamp a few along the surface edges of the box; leaving space for the other two sizes of snowflakes. When using paint on stamps it is important that you do not overload the image. Pounce the cosmetic wedge sponge into acrylic paint and then on a clean area of the palette. When you look at the bottom of the sponge it should be covered in paint, but you should still be able to see the texture of the sponge. Now quickly pounce the loaded sponge over the entire image and stamp it on the surface; refer to photo for placement. Re-load the sponge and stamp as needed. Repeat steps with the other two sizes of snowflakes. Brush on a thin coat of Media Matte Medium; using the Oval Wash Combo brush. This will seal the Vintage Effect Wash, making the surface ready to paint. artistsclub.com 3

4 Transferring Design 5. When dry, transfer the lighthouse to the surface; using the graph ruler. To aid in the transferring of any straight lines, drag the stylus along the ruler s edge. Relief Stenciled Bricks 6. Randomly apply the bricks to the lighthouse tower with the Rough Bricks stencil and Crackle Medium; using the Relief Stenciling technique. Refer to photo for placement and be sure not to place bricks where the windows or door will be applied later. Position the stencil on the surface, secure with Frog Tape. With light pressure, apply a thin layer of Crackle Medium over the stencil; using the palette knife. To remove stencil, hold down one end with fingers, while gently and slowly lifting the opposite end. Allow to dry. Immediately clean palette knife and stencil. Repeat steps to apply the other clusters of bricks. 4 artistsclub.com

5 Basecoating Lighthouse 7. With the appropriate size shaders, basecoat: Warm White watch room, tower Lamp Black ventilator balls, roof, walkway bases Detailing Lighthouse 8. TOWER corner load the angle with Slate Grey, float a very wide shade down the left and right sides of the tower; to create a rounding effect. Mop to soften. To deepen the shade floats, corner load the angle with Graphite, refloat narrower floats. Mop to soften. Corner load the angle with Slate Grey, float highlights across the top of the ventilator balls, along the lip of the roof s edge, along the top of the first walkway base, the top and bottom of the second walkway base. Using the large DRY Texture brush and Snow White, dry brush a highlight down the center of the roof, watch room, second walkway base and tower. WINDOWS AND DOOR basecoat with Graphite; using the appropriate size shaders. Double load the angle with Slate Grey + Snow White, brush blend on your palette, float highlighting across the top of each window and the door. With the 5/0 liner and Warm White, pull the window panes and door knob. With the 5/0 liner and Lamp Black, outline the windows and door. Then with 5/0 liner and Snow White, pull broken highlight strokes within the Lamp Black outlining. LENS ROOM corner load the angle with Warm White, float a highlight circle in the lens room area; for the lens. Wash over the lens room area with Slate Grey; using the 12 shader, to represent glass. With the 0 liner and Lamp Black, pull the lens room panes and lightning rod (line that s pulled up from the ventilator balls). Then pull the Lamp Black shade strokes for the glass marks; then Snow White highlight strokes above the Lamp Black ones. With the 0 liner and Lamp Black, pull the walkway rails and supports. Then with the 5/0 liner and Snow White, pull broken highlight strokes within the Lamp Black. FINISHING 9. To protect your painted piece, varnish the entire box with the DuraClear Matte Varnish; using the Oval Wash Combo brush. This brush doesn t leave any brushstroke marks after the varnish has dried.
