3 Instructions Preparation 1. Basecoat the Canvas using the sponge roller with Light Buttermilk Paint. Allow to dry. 2. Trace the pattern and transfer the details as needed. 3. Tint the crackle paste with Light Buttermilk. Use the palette knife to blend thoroughly. Use the palette knife to apply the tinted crackle paste to the fish. Apply to his face, gills and here and there on fins and tail. Allow to dry. Background Technique 1. The background is full of color and is painted to suggest the ocean water. It is pulled in different directions to create movement and interest in the painting. Notice the paint in front of Bubbles mouth is pushed to the left and moves up and down, suggesting the water is being pushed away as he swims. The painted area under the fins is pulled in the same direction as the fins, suggesting the water is moving with each of his fin strokes. Also notice how the paint is the darkest and most shadowed around the fish. As it moves away from the fish it becomes airy and stippled. 2. Allow some of the background color to show through here and there as you move away from the fish. Take your time and play with the colors. Have fun with this. Work your sea sponge and brushes to create texture and a variety of stippling. 3. Use the 1 brush to dampen the surface with water. Load paint onto your sea sponge and pounce it gently on the palette to remove excess paint and then in a stipple fashion, apply to your canvas. Use the mop brush to soften the edges. For a variation in the stippling effects, use the mop to totally soften and then sometimes just mop here and there for more of a spotted appearance. Painting Steps 1. Wet the surface first and use the sea sponge to gently stipple in some colors. Mop to soften (most of this is stippled away from the fish). I started with Aquamarine, then Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Blue Hue, Dioxazine Purple and Prussian Blue Hue. Do not over stipple the background or it may appear too blotchy. You can always apply more stippling with the sponge at the end. 2. Switch to the ¾ Shader and sideload float the same colors against the fish. At times chisel out with your brush to create movement to the water. Deepen shading against the fish here and there with a brush mix of Prussian Blue Hue plus Carbon Black. Allow to dry. Use the 10 Short Shader brush and deepen slightly more with straight Carbon Black. 3. Use the Deerfoot brush to apply stippling Blue Violet, Admiral Blue, Sea Breeze and Yellow Oxide. Wet the surface so you can mop to soften if needed. Build your colors and dry in between applications using the hair dryer or working in sections to allow areas to dry. This will set the application before reapplying the next layer.

4 Bubbles 1. Refer to the close-up color photo for color placement. There is no right or wrong, the fish is full of color. Just have fun with it! 2. Use the 10 Short Shader brush to float and chisel out colors on the fins with Hansa Yellow Light, Vermillion, Electric Pink, Peony Pink and Razzle Berry. Pull some chisel strokes long and some short. Keep this darkest color towards the body, allowing the colors to fade as they move towards the outside edge of the fins. Notice they do not go all the way out. 3. Switch to the 10/0 Script liner brush and apply a few strands of more color if needed. 4. Add highlights of Titanium White to the ends of the fins, pulling into towards the fins. Also loosely sideload float and chisel away from the fins towards the water. 5. Bubbles face is loosely shaded at the front and on the gills with Hansa Yellow Light and the pinks. 6. Switch to the 10/0 Short Liner brush and apply more cracks to the textured face with Razzle Berry. 7. Highlight the front of his mouth and on the gills with Titanium White. 8. Tint here and there on the face, mouth and fins with Sea Breeze, Cerulean Blue and a small amount of Prussian Blue Hue. Bubbles Eye 1. Use the 10/0 Short Liner brush to apply the Prussian Blue pupil. While wet, over stroke the front with Titanium White and wet blend Carbon Black on the back of the pupil. 2. The lid is painted in a mix to Carbon Black + Titanium White to create a Charcoal Grey. While wet, blend Titanium White on the left side and blend Carbon Black on the right. 3. Use the Short Liner brush to skim Peony Pink on the outside left and top right of the eye. 4. Line a small amount of Prussian Blue Hue on the bottom outside edge of the eye and a small amount of Titanium White to the outside top of the eye. Finishing Steps 1. Use the Deerfoot brush and Titanium White to lightly splatter the surface here and there. 2. Spray with Sealer/Finisher and let dry. 3. Use the Liquid Glass to apply small and large bubbles coming from the fish s mouth.
