2 Bear-ied Treasure Box by Deb Malewski Palette: Decoart Americana Acrylic Paints Honey Brown, Golden Straw, French Vanilla, Light Cinnamon, Bittersweet Chocolate, Snow White, Delane s Cheek Color, Leaf Green, Lavender, Peony Pink, Country Red, Hot Shots Fiery Red, Baby Blue, Admiral Blue, Pumpkin, Sapphire Blue, Baby Pink, Lamp Black Brushes: Royal and Langnickel Royal Fusion Series /0; Royal Langnickel Sable Series 5005 #14, Royal and Langnickel Shader Series R3150 #6 ; Royal Langnickel Aqualon Wisp Brush Filbert Series /8 Supplies: Graphite paper, stylus, Decoart Matte Varnish, shoe box, sea sponge, assorted size dot stencil, stiff stencil brush for fly specking Surface Preparation: Base cover of box with Baby Blue. Using damp sea sponge, pick up some Admiral Blue and lightly pounce the lid of the box, turning your wrist to vary the design as you work. Basecoat bottom of box with Admiral Blue, then fly speck with Baby Blue, and stencil Baby Blue dots (mine are about 5/8 in diameter). Apply main lines of bear pattern using stylus and transfer paper. The other items will be painted on over the bear so ignore them on the pattern for now. How to paint the bears: Using a damp Wisp brush, pick up Honey Brown. Use a generous amount of paint. Start with the head. Work in a circle, and starting at the outer edge of the circle, pull your brush away from the center. This will give you more wispy hair at the edges. Fill in the entire head this way, by pulling out from the center. Fill in the ears, including the center of them, by pulling away from the head. -For the body, pull down and flick out to the sides, then add the arms by pulling to the sides, and wisping out the edges. While the base paint is still wet and without cleaning your brush pick up some Golden Straw, and use this in the same way to add highlights, only use a lighter touch. Just add a Wisp here and there to add more color variation in the fur of the head. If the base coat dries just pick up more Honey Brown in your brush. By using both colors like this it will give you a softer blend. No 2

3 need to clean your brush until you start shading with it. -Pick up more Golden Straw and fill in the muzzle area, again working in a circle pulling out from the center. -Still without cleaning the brush, pick up some French Vanilla, and add more highlights to the head, body and arms. Use soft curving strokes. I like to highlight the top of the muzzle with Wisps of French Vanilla. Using your round brush and French Vanilla, add the lower lip, pulling short hairs down. Fill the mouth area with Bittersweet Chocolate. - Clean your Wisp brush, and pick up Light Cinnamon for shading. You will not be doing traditional side load shading, but will use the Wisp to pull or pat strokes to lay the color in where you want shading. Shade inside ears, at base of each side of the ears, around the outside of the muzzle, under the chin, and on both sides of the paws. Use light pats of Light Cinnamon around the muzzle using the point of the brush, not the sides of the brush. Later we will darken this by sideloading using the traditional method. -Add eyes, nose, and mouth using Bittersweet Chocolate and round brush. Freckles are Lt. Cinnamon. -When fur is dry, use your Shader brush and some Lt. Cinnamon to shade around the muzzle, using a shaky hand, so as to retain some of the wispiness you just created. Shade also on the lower part of the muzzle, to add more roundness to it. Shade under the nose, under the lip, and under the cheeks ; shade the neck, where the arms meet the body, at the bottom of the bear, and where the ears meet the head. Using Shader brush and Bittersweet Chocolate, shade the upper part of the inside of the ears by sideloading. -Using Sable #14 and Delane s Cheek Color, pick up small amount of paint, and scrub most of it off on your paper towel. Gently scrub in a circular motion in the cheek area with the brush to create a soft blush. Use a light touch it s easier to add more than take off what you apply! Using Wisp and French Vanilla, add more highlights where needed. I like to soften the areas where I shaded by pulling more hairs over those areas. -Apply the rest of the pattern for details. 3

4 String is Admiral Blue, with highlights of Baby Blue. All letters are outlined in Snow White, have Snow White String, and Lamp Black holes. T Country Red, with a touch of Hot Shots Fiery Red to highlight the top. R Golden Straw, with Golden Straw + Snow White at top to highlight E Baby Blue, shaded with Sapphire at the bottom A Leaf Green, highlighted with Snow White + Leaf Green at the top S Pumpkin, highlighted with Snow White + Pumpkin at the top U Lavender, highlighted with Snow White + Lavender at the top R Golden Straw, highlighted with Snow White + Golden Straw at the top E Admiral Blue, highlighted with Sapphire at the top S Peony Pink, highlighted with Baby Pink at the top If you prefer you could make all the letters the same color. Dots: I used a stencil to make the dotted background. I used a 3/8 and a 1/8 diameter stencil, but you can use whatever you have available. If you don t have a stencil, look at other things you have that might have a hole punched in them, like for hanging them on a peg. Or, if you have a hole punch you can make a stencil of your own. Varnish using Decoart Matte Varnish. Knowing that these boxes will be in little hands, maybe a couple coats of varnish would be best! Copyright 2006 Deb Malewski.
