Thane Intrductin Natinal Institute f Science Cmmunicatin and Infrmatin Resurces (NISCAIR) came int existence n 30 September 2002 with the merger f Natinal Institute f Science Cmmunicatin (NISCOM) and Indian Natinal Scientific Dcumentatin Centre (INSDOC). Bth NISCOM and INSDOC, the tw premier institutes f the Cuncil f Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), were devted t disseminatin and dcumentatin f S&T infrmatin. NISCOM had been in existence fr the last six decades (first as tw Publicatin Units f CSIR, which were merged t frm the Publicatins Divisin, which was later renamed as Publicatins & Infrmatin Directrate and in 1996, as NISCOM). Over the years, NISCOM diversified its activities, and thrugh a hst f its infrmatin prducts, cmprising research and ppular science jurnals, encyclpedic publicatins, mngraphs, bks, and infrmatin services, it had been reaching ut t researchers, students, entrepreneurs, industrialists, agriculturists, plicy planners and als the cmmn man. INSDOC came int being in 1952 and was engaged in prviding S&T infrmatin and dcumentatin services thrugh myriad activities such as abstracting and indexing, design and develpment f databases, translatin, library autmatin, prviding access t internatinal infrmatin surces, human resurce develpment, cnsultancy services in setting up mdern library-cum-infrmatin centers. INSDOC was als hst t the Natinal Science Library and the SAARC Dcumentatin Centre. Infrmatin Resurces One f the cre activities f NISCAIR is t cllect, rganize and disseminate S&T infrmatin generated in India as well as in the wrld

2 which has relevance t Indian S&T cmmunity. Under this prgramme, the institute is building cmprehensive cllectin f S&T publicatins in print as well as in electrnic frm and disseminating thrugh traditinal as well as mdern means benefiting different segments f the sciety. Majr resurces under this activity are Natinal Science Library, Electrnic Resurces, Indigenus Databases and Raw Materials Herbarium and Museum. Electrnic Resurces Autmated libraries are slwly shifting t Electrnic Libraries that will eventually lead t the establishment f Digital Libraries. With decreasing shelf space and ever grwing cllectins in the libraries, NISCAIR has been advcating the cnversin f autmated libraries int electrnic libraries. NISCAIR has develped expertise in the design and develpment f databases. In additin t develpment f in-huse databases, NISCAIR has designed and develped databases fr ther rganizatins. Natinal Unin Catalgue f Scientific Serials in India (NUCSSI) Natinal Unin Catalgue f Scientific Serials in India (NUCSSI) is the first indigenus database that serves as an ideal tl t access Jurnal hldings infrmatin. Jurnals are the main surce f Science and Technlgy infrmatin. NUCSSI is a data repsitry f a large number f

5 unique jurnal titles and library hldings belnging t majr universities, S&T institutins, R&D units f industries, higher institutes like IISc, IITs and prfessinal institutes spread all ver the cuntry.
