13 3 Functinal descriptin 3.1 Receiver 3.2 Transmitter 3.3 Micrcntrller A shrt descriptin f the B868-tiny will be given based n the blck diagram f figure 1. The receive path starts at the antenna and after the antenna switch an LNA amplifies the signal with a minimum additin f nise. A bandpass SAW filter rejects the image frequency and signals utside the 868MHz band. Then the signal is amplified and dwn cnverted t the first IF frequency. After a lw pass filter the signal is quadrature dwn cnverted t base band. The I and Q signals are then filtered and tw limiter stages and a quadrature crrelatr cncatenated by a data filter and a data slicer reprduce the data t be received. This data is fed t the micrcntrller. The data t be transmitted is generated by the micrcntrller. This data is directly FSK mdulated t a MHz carrier. This mdulated signal is then amplified by a highly efficient pwer amplifier. Then the signal is fed t the antenna switch and is radiated by the antenna. The LO signal is internally generated by a VCO and PLL synthesizer. The micrcntrller cntrls the cmplete receiver and transmitter. This means that all RF transceiver IC cnfiguratin settings are prgrammed and the cntrl lines fr the antenna switch and LNA n/ff are set by this device. The micrcntrller als acts as an interface between RS232-data and the transmit and receive data. Additinal t this, the micrcntrller perates the antenna switch. Paragraph describes the functin f the I/O lines. The ADC functinality is explained in paragraph Sftware The B868-tiny is delivered with prgrammed Flash and EEPROM. Fr develpment purpses the pssibility exists t reprgram the micrcntrller. Fr reprgramming the fllwing pins have t be used: pin 24 (Clck_Prg), pin 25 (MISO_Prg) and pin 26 (MOSI_Prg). It is recmmended t use the B868- tiny Radi Mdule Dem Kit during develpment. The pssibility t reprgram the mdule is implemented n this bard. 14 3.3.2 I/O lines The B868-tiny has fur I/O lines that can each be cnfigured either as input r utput using register S260. These I/O lines are accessible (fr reading r writing, fr input respectively utput lines) thrugh register S270. The I/O lines can be used fr applicatin signaling prcesses (e.g. inidicatrs r sensrs). Using the user cnfigurable I/O lines f the B868-tiny mdule saves I/O pins n the user's applicatin hardware. The I/O cpy perating mde can be used t cpy the I/O frm a master mdule directly t the slave mdule. The I/O cpy sample rate is ptimised fr current cnsumptin and amunts 1 secnd ADC The ADC can be used t sample analg signals. These samples can be read by the micrcntrller and used fr the user applicatin (e.g. sensr reading). The B868-tiny cntains tw ADC inputs, EA1 (pin22) and EA2 (pin21). The supplied signal must have a value between 0 and Vdd. Activating f the ADC ccurs during start-up, and the ADC is deactivated in the Standby mde. The ADC value can be read via Hayes register S280 fr EA1 and S282 fr EA Antenna The standard B868-tiny cntains an integrated antenna. In rder t btain maximum antenna perfrmance, special care cncerning the grund plane underneath the antenna must be taken during design f the hst PCB. Paragraph 6.2 prvides recmmendatins cncerning this issue. Optinally, an external antenna can be used. COPYRIGHT One RF Technlgy 2004 Page: 3-2 File: Manual_B868-tiny_e_v3.1.dc Rev: 3.0/

24 5.3.1 Transparent Mde In Transparent Mde, the B868-tiny radi mdule behaves like a wired serial link : I.e. the B868-tiny radi mdule des nt nly transmit t the radi channel every data received n the serial link, but als transmits n the serial link the infrmatin received n the radi channel. Basically the B868-tiny radi mdule, as a half-duplex mdule, reprduces the half-duplex functin f a RS-485 cable. There is n flw cntrl perfrmed by the B868-tiny mdule in the transparent mde, neither n the serial link nr n the radi link. Flw cntrl must be carried ut by sftware applicatins via varius prtcls in use such as MODBUS, JBUS, etc Cnsequently, in Transparent Mde it is nt pssible t change the mdule parameters withut a temprary return t Hayes mde. NOTE: Transparent Secured Mde The user s sftware applicatin must adequately verify that all buffers are transmitted crrectly taking int accunt that an interrupted transmissin link may lead t lsing ne r several buffers. In rder t cnfirm the crrectness f the transmitted data frames, a data flw cntrl between the radi mdules is added t the Transparent Mde, s that each data transfer is data verified. The risk f data lss is much lwer than during the use f applicatin sftware nly because this latter is dependent n the intermediate times inserted by the serial link. Mrever, a flw cntrl is perfrmed n the serial link in rder t warn the user that the buffer (including 245 characters) is saturating. The warning level is default set t 245 characters and can be prgrammed via register S218. The receiving B868-tiny radi mdule analyses this data frame and checks its cnsistency. When the data frame is received crrectly, the receiver transmits an acknwledgement back t the transmitter, and delivers the received data framing t its serial link. In case the receptin is nt withut errrs, the receiver requests a new framing transmissin t the transmitter. The number f repetitins depends n the parameter prgrammed in the mdem cnfiguratin (Register S223). At serial prt level, each transmitted data frame is «Data Verified», but n statement asserts t the user whether the data frame has been transmitted yet r nt. In «Transparent Secured Mde», a time-ut is defined t indicate the end f a frame. This time-ut is a prgrammable parameter (Register S214) separating each frame frm the next ne. Addressed secured mde s purpse is t ffer an ptimal radi link quality and t prvide transparent mde with the security f the secured mde. This transparent addressed secured mde includes the additinal feature t use an address field t address ne particular client. Data Management is as fllws: Data transmissins are fully «Data Verified». The mdem acts as in transparent mde, adding frame encapsulatin. Identificatin f clients with a specific number added at the beginning f each data frame. Example: "1=Hell" sends the data frame "Hell" t Client N.1. The receiver client recgnises the client transmitting mdem by the number starting the data frame. Example: "002=Hell" indicates that data frame "Hell" cmes frm Client N.2. Yu can add ne frame ending character: Carriage Return<CR>, after each received frame. This in rder t distinguish each frame. Example: "002=1458<CR> 003=4587<CR>" indicates data frame "1458" cmes frm Client N.2, and data frame "4587" cmes frm Client N.3. N server, each client can cmmunicate with each ther. 30 The dem mde is similar t a Master and Slave mde, but the units are cmmunicating cntinuusly: The master sends data frames t the slave and its yellw LED is flashing If the data is crrectly received, the slave lights its green LED, sends back the data t the master and its yellw LED is flashing If the data is received with errrs, the slave lights its red LED If the master crrectly receives back a data frame, it lights its green LED and restarts the prcess after 100 ms. If the master receives a frame with errrs r desn t receive any frame after a 50ms time-ut, it lights its red LED. After 100 ms, the master restarts the prcess Radi Test Cmmands These special AT cmmands are integrated in the B868-tiny radi mdule in rder t make measurements during cntinuus transmissin, and are primarily used during radi tests (radiated pwer, bandwidth, etc.) t shw cnfrmance t the ETS standard. 31 6 Integrating the B868-tiny int yur applicatin 6.1 Antenna plarisatin In rder t realize the maximum pssible range between tw B868-tiny mdules the antenna plarisatin is f imprtance. The antenna plarisatin defines the electric field vectr. The maximum field strength is in the hrizntal plane when the B868-tiny antenna is vertically plarised. Best perfrmance is reached when the plarisatin f the transmitting and the receiving antenna are equal. The antenna can be plarised vertically r hrizntally. The best plarisatin fr yur applicatin depends n the placement f the B868-tiny mdules. In general the fllwing tw situatins can be distinguished: If bth B868-tiny mdules perate at the same height (see Figure 6-1), ptimal range shuld be realised when the antennas f bth mdules are vertically plarised. If ne B868-tiny mdule is situated abve anther B868-tiny mdule (see Figure 6-2), ptimal range shuld be realised when bth mdules are hrizntally plarised. addlink N1 addlink N2 Figure 6-1: Optimal plarisatin f B868-tiny antennas with mdules at the same height COPYRIGHT One RF Technlgy 2004 Page: 6-1 File: Manual_B868-tiny_e_v3.1.dc Rev: 3.1/

32 addlink N2 addlink N1 Figure 6-2: Optimal plarisatin f B868-tiny antennas with mdules at different heights Anther antenna characteristic is the antenna gain, fr ptimal perfrmance this parameter must be as large as pssible. The way t ptimise antenna and plarisatin fr the applicatin is explained in the fllwing paragraphs. 6.2 Antenna grund plane n hst PCB An imprtant part f the antenna frms the grund plane underneath the antenna. Because this grund plane isn t part f the B868-tiny mdule itself but must be prvided by the hst PCB special care is needed during design f this PCB. The grund plane has influence n the fllwing tw parameters: Antenna plarisatin Antenna gain T find the ptimal antenna perfrmance, experiments with different grund plane dimensins have been perfrmed. The fllwing grund plane dimensins are defined: W1 W2 L1 L2 COPYRIGHT One RF Technlgy 2004 Page: 6-2 File: Manual_B868-tiny_e_v3.1.dc Rev: 3.1/

33 W2 L1 addlink with integrated antenna L2 W1 grundplane Figure 6-3: Antenna parameters The cnclusins frm the experiment are as fllws: The grund plane can be lcated indifferently n the tp side r the bttm side. W2 and L1 can be small as their influence n the antenna s electrical perfrmances is weak. They are therefre fixed t a shrt dimensin f 10 mm. W1 and L2 are imprtant and strngly influence the antenna s electrical perfrmances. T get a hrizntal plarisatin, W1 has t be maximised. T get a vertical plarisatin, L2 has t be maximised. T increase the antenna s gain, W1 r L2, r W1 and L2 have t be maximised. COPYRIGHT One RF Technlgy 2004 Page: 6-3 File: Manual_B868-tiny_e_v3.1.dc Rev: 3.1/

34 The fllwing diagram shws the gain s evlutin when W1 and L2 are increased (10 t 70 mm) and summarise the characteristics f the antenna: Gain in dbi L2 in mm W1= 10 mm W1 = 30 mm W1 = 50 mm W1 = 70 mm Figure 6-4: Antenna Gain vs. W1 and L2 The diagram clearly shws that the gain increases with W1 and L2. Therefre, the lnger W1 and L2, the better the antenna s electrical perfrmance will be. Actually, the plarisatin als needs t be cnsidered, i.e. a prper W1-L2 cmbinatin needs t be chsen t get the desired plarisatin (vertical r hrizntal). The table shwn belw details the different cmbinatins t get a pure plarisatin fr an ptimal radiatin: Therefre, W1 must be much smaller than L2 t get a gd vertical plarisatin and much larger than L2 t get a gd hrizntal plarisatin. 35 The fllwing table shws the tw ptimal cnfiguratins f the B868-tiny antenna: W2 L1 addlink with integrated antenna L2 W1 grundplane VERTICAL POLARISATION L2 > 50 mm W1 =10 mm W2 = 10 mm L1 = 10 mm G > -5 dbi L2 > 70 mm G > -4 dbi E HORIZONTAL POLARISATION W2 = 10 mm L1 = 10 mm L2 = 10 mm W1 > 50 mm G > -4 dbi W1 > 70 mm G > -2 dbi Figure 6-5: Optimal use f the antenna The best perfrmance fr vertical plarisatin is realised with L2 > 70 mm the antenna gain is then >-4 db, when the size f the hst PCB is a critical factr it is pssible t reduce L2 t 50 mm, the antenna gain is then reduced t >-5 db. Fr hrizntal plarisatin the ptimum antenna gain f -2 db is btained with W1 >70 mm, a reduced hst grund plane with W1 > 50 mm results int a gain >-4 db.
