1 VILLAGE QUILTERS NEWSLETTER Next Meeting September 15, 2016 FROM THE PRESIDENT Rumor has it that I was elected guild president while I was river cruising in Europe last June. I have some big shoes to fill - Pat Wyatt will be a hard act to follow. I can only hope to do as good a job for Village as she did. I have a great team of ladies to support me in this endeavor, and I am looking forward to this new challenge. One thing lacking as we start our new year is someone in the number two spot. We still need a vice president if Village is to continue beyond next June. Please strongly consider volunteering for this position. I want to leave you with this essay I found last January. I felt it is appropriate as we begin our new year at Village Quilters. I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're Doing Something. So that's my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody's ever made before. Don't freeze, don't stop, don't worry that it isn't good enough, or it isn't perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life. Whatever it is you're scared of doing, Do it. Make your mistakes, next year and forever. 2 We re Excited! Karen Kay Buckley Returns to Village Quilters this month! Karen Kay Buckley has over 300 quilts to her credit, and has received many awards. Her work has been featured in numerous magazines, calendars and Karen has been a recent guest on Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims The Quilt Show. Her schedule is busy teaching, judging and designing. Village Quilters is excited to welcome Karen back for a lecture and workshops. She is truly a gifted teacher. Karen s lecture at our meeting, To Border or Not to Border, that is the Question will inspire us to think about how to enhance our quilts and maybe stretch ourselves into designing our own borders. AND we ll learn how to measure to ensure a flat quilt! Karen is always a wealth of knowledge and creativity. Workshop Openings - There are still a few openings in Karen s workshops in September! Lucky You! On Wednesday, September 14 Village Quilters is offering a Karen Kay Buckley all day machine appliqué workshop called Circles Squared. The cost, including one of Karen s kits is $65. On Thursday, September 15, you can sign up for a hand appliqué class with Karen entitled Fiesta Mexico. This is a 3-hour workshop that will begin after our guild meeting. The cost is $44, which includes a kit. Please contact Dori or Paulette right away if you are interested. Check out descriptions and photos of the workshops at VQ SUMMER CHALLENGE Bring your finished summer challenge projects to the September meeting. The challenge was to finish a UFO that was inspired by Village Quilters. Only completed projects can be entered (can t still be a UFO!). There are prizes!

3 MEMBERSHIP It is time to renew for ! Memberships for the new year will be accepted at the September meeting. Please use the form attached to this newsletter and bring it with you to the meeting. If there are no changes from last year, you may fill in your name and check the box at the top that says No Changes. Dues are $30 and we accept cash and check. If you have not had your picture taken for the directory, please see me at the meeting so your lovely face may be included. Linda Newsom RAFFLE BASKETS Don t forget to bring sewing/quilting related goodies for the 3 raffle baskets. CHARITY GIVING What a long hot summer it has been. Floods, Zika mosquitos, and political nastiness---it all makes having a sewing room to escape to a life saver. Hopefully, the weather will be cooler by our September meeting. I wonder if the Lodge has replaced the air conditioners? (That answer is YES!) Please remember to bring your canned food donations in Sept. With school starting, we can help hungry children get thru the school day. I am always excited to see everyone in Sept. Keep sewing and see you soon! Kay Worley BINGO 2017! Our next Bingo is October 27, Patty Wheeler will begin collecting donations for Bingo (quilts, table runners and door prizes) at the October 2016 meeting. Please do not bring Bingo donations to the September meeting. SUNSHINE Please drop Linda Murrow a note to let her know you are thinking of her as she continues to recuperate. Please remember to send news of members in need of sunshine to Janet Ruehl so she can share it with the guild.

4 CHARITY SEWING: BABY QUILTS This year we will be donating baby quilts to Pregnancy Center West on Old Frederick Road. If you took home a baby quilt kit to work on over the summer, please return the finished product in September. I will have a few more kits available to hand out at the meeting. Other baby quilts are always welcome, too. Thank you kindly. Daria Phair dbphair@gmail.com SHOWCASE OUR TALENT This month our display quilt is provided for us by Patty Cirulli. Patty took a class in 2011 from Pam Lee. It was a "stack-and-whack" class. Don't miss looking at it at the busy Sept. meeting. Stack-&-Whack quilts always fascinate me in that the blocks are SO different even though the material is the same. I will have a sign-up sheet available at the Sept. meeting for members who would like to contribute to our monthly displays. Please consider doing so and providing us all with the enjoyment of viewing yours or a relative, friends, antique, or rescue quilt. You may contact me at any time on my home phone ( ) to arrange a month that would be convenient for you. Thanks for participating in the service to our Guild. Jacque Formica PROJECT LINUS UPDATE THANK YOU for exceeding our annual donation goal of one quilt for each Village Quilter member. With Pat Wyatt as our President, our amazing guild donated 171 quilts to Project Linus. At the September meeting, I look forward to collecting Project Linus quilts finished over the summer and hope to see several Linus quilts in the VQ Summer Challenge. We are always looking for members to help with rotary cutting fabric, sewing quilt tops, quilting or tying quilts, and binding quilts. Let us know what you can do to continue our tradition of sharing quilted hugs with children. Stephanie Sanidas

5 MYSTERY QUILT Get ready for a fun experience with our row mystery quilt. I will have some directions to hand out to those who 'really intend' to participate. There are 6 sets of instructions. We intend to show our completed tops at the June Tea. I will have a sign-up sheet at the Sept. meeting so I will know how many copies of the instructions to print each month. Please bring A SELF ADDRESSED ENVELOPE WITH A STAMP INSIDE to the Sept meeting. If you miss a meeting I will mail you a copy of the instructions only if I have that self-addressed envelope from you. The envelope with the stamp inside will be returned if not used at the end of the mystery quilt "adventure". 6 LIBRARY NEWS I hope everyone has had a productive sewing summer. I want to thank all of you for taking 30 books out in June. It made the 4 bags much lighter for me. I spent my summer going through all the books (the perk of being the librarian) and discovered that we have 12 books which have not come home to Village Quilter's Library in a while. So please take some time to go through your books, look for the red tape on the spine and the Village Quilter's stamp in the inside cover. I'm looking forward to a great creative year. And please keep taking books out, the more the better! Donna Shroff WEST RIVER FALL RETREAT All remaining balances are due to me by the October meeting. If there are any questions, let me know. Thanks, Sharon Coffman 5-INCH SQUARE EXCHANGE We will exchange squares in September. Bring 2 sets of eight squares in autumn colors. Due to the fact that there is a guild-wide summer challenge and a workshop after the September meeting, we have been advised by the board that we will need to move showing our challenge to the October meeting, so that everyone can vote for their favorite project. Remember, the rule is that you must use at least 16 of your squares, in any way you want. If you haven't had quite enough time to finish, now there is an opportunity to complete yours and enter it.
