VILLAGE QUILTERS NEWSLETTER Next Meeting is September 19, 2013 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE What a great privilege I had to be part of the Stitching History at the Maryland Historical Society. The flag was finished on Aug. 22 as planned; it was then folded until it will proudly fly over Fort McHenry on September 14. Your Board was hard at work at the Summer Meeting. Great speakers are coming. Please remember our Quilt Bingo fundraiser on October 25. We need quilts for prizes and items for the Silent Auction table. See you all at the September meeting to begin another year of friendship and quilting. J Elton MEET THE OFFICERS President Janet Elton joined 3 years ago. Retired from nursing in 2011 from St. Agnes. Like history, recreating 1800 s clothes, flea marts, antiques, quilt retreats, classes and anything new. My great joys are my 6 grandchildren. Vice President Pat Wyatt - Recently returned to MD after years abroad working for U.S. Government. Lifelong needle worker and sewer, but fairly new to quilting. Member since last year. Love to applique, make colorful quilts, do donation quilts and learn! Secretary Treasurer Programs Jane Stolte, formerly an administrator at the VA Medical Center, member off and on for about 30 years. Retired last October, reorganized my sewing room with 30+ years of fabrics and UFO's, but love that guild meetings, retreats and classes inspire me to make new friends and tackle new projects. Patty Wheeler, retired teacher, joined VQ in Sept 2007, queen of unfinished projects, love to piece and appliqué, I quilt mostly by check! Dori Batavick our past President, retired school teacher, all round nice person to know Paulette Chellis, still working part time as an administrative assistant. Love to travel with my husband and spend time with my grandkids. Love the entire process of quilting, from piecing to machine quilting. Still a "newbie" member, starting my 4th year as a Village Quilter. SOME OF THE COMMITTEE CHAIRS more in October Newsletter Block of Month Barb McMahon. Living in Westminster, I am newly retired and loving it! Formerly a Business Administrator/Bookkeeper, etc. VQ member since approx 1983, with a passion for our guild and anything quilting related, especially fabric - and my dear family. Newsletter Lynn Hastmann, former IT Professional and legal secretary, past BOM, assistant to Webmaster Patty W, love to go to quilt retreats, take classes and learn new techniques. Library Daria Phair - public librarian since 1979, longarm quilter at Seminole Sampler, began quilting in October 2006, love quilt retreats and shows. Membership Cindy Reisberg joined VQ in 2008 after retiring from 30 years State service. After many years behind a desk, I was looking for fun. My mom, Norma Hong (a longtime member), pointed me in the right direction. In 2009, I was asked to assume the role of

Sunshine Hospitality Membership Chair. I enjoy seeing other's creations, learning new techniques, and gaining inspiration from fellow quilters. Janet Ruehl formerly an R.D. And Diabetes Educator. Member since 1987, gain inspiration for creativity from VQ programs & members show & tell, thoroughly enjoy arranging donations brought in for our monthly raffle baskets. Marie Anderson - Retired nurse. A member since I love to paper piece and making small quilts. Ann Blais - I have been a member since 2010 and work with Marie Anderson in the kitchen, making coffee and overseeing the lunch. I enjoy appliqué and hand quilting. PAST PRESIDENT IS NOT TENSE, BUT IS GRATEFUL Please excuse my little grammatical play on words, but I now have a charming box of bow tie blocks that I cherish, but I do feel a little tense. I want to see these blocks lovingly joined together into a loving quilt. And I d better get to work! A big thank you to each member for her generous gift. Thank you, Patty Wheeler, for organizing this special treat. I look forward to showing off a finished top of bouncy green and red bow ties at a meeting this year! Dori Batavick GYLEEN FITZGERALD TRASH TO TREASURE PINEAPPLE QUILT WORKSHOP Don t forget the workshop on Wednesday, September 18! Those who are signed up should have received a reminder in the mail. If you need any more information contact Patty Wheeler. 30 S PLATES RAFFLE QUILT Don t forget about selling tickets for the Dresden Plate Raffle Quilt. I would like to give Bingo a hand in raising funds to benefit the Guilds speakers and charitable projects. Just think, if everyone in the guild bought 6 tickets for $5 we could pay for some of the wonderful speakers Dori and Paulette have lined up. See Mitzie Lepka or Lynn Hastmann to volunteer a couple hours of your time. BINGO! BINGO!! BINGO!!! Bingo Is Coming!! Please Plan to Attend On Friday, October 25 th and Support Our ONLY Major Fundraiser! The Charm Exchange will entail bringing a 5 square of fabric and exchanging for the same. During the September meeting a survey will be done (by a count of hands) so as to determine the number of squares each participant should/could trade. Claire Malczyn SEPTEMBER COLORFUL MONTH COLORFUL STITCHES We are so fortunate to open our Village Quilters season with a visit from Gyleen Fitzgerald. Gyleen was born in Philadelphia, PA but grew up in Taiwan and Japan. Those formative years in the Far East helped her develop a love for simplistic artistry. She began needlework at the very young age of four and has since pursued artistic expression in drawing and quilt making. We look forward to a wonderful lecture and a great way to begin our Village Quilters year. Read more about Gyleen at about.html Paulette Chellis and Dori Batavick SUNSHINE Send all info regarding members in need of cheering up to Janet Ruehl so she can share the news with the guild. She can be reached on her cellphone ( ) or jlruehl@hotmail.com. You can reach us thru at contact@villagequiltersmd.com

SHOP/HOP AND SEW RETREAT The Shop/Hop and Sew Retreat will be in May, three nights and four days...may 20, 21, 22, and 23. The location is in Denver, PA which is very near to Lancaster, PA. There are "mucho" stores who love quilters and their credit cards! There are two places left for quilters. Blue Lake Resort has 14 bedrooms that easily accommodate two persons (queen size bed) so a non-quilting buddy is welcome for the 10 quilters that have signed up already or the two quilters who desire to join us. Please contact me at home or by prior to our Sept Meeting or at the Sept meeting if space is still available. Smiles... Jacqueline Formica SHOWCASING OUR TALENTS: SEPTEMBER VQ MONTHLY DISPLAY QUILT While at the September meeting take a look at the beautiful quilt Virginia Fry created in The article below was published in The APL News. THANK YOU I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU to all of my friends in Village Quilters for your cards and condolence messages during this very difficult time, concerning the loss of my brother. The police have concluded that this was a hate crime against police officers (my brother's son) and government officials by an extremist religious fanatic---a very LARGE young woman--who is now in custody and has been charged for this crime. Although, this will not bring my brother back to us, perhaps it will prevent the loss of others and their family members. Again, thank you for your support. We are truly a loving and supportive quilting community. Kathy Fowler USED INK CARTRIDGES Please remember to bring in any used ink cartridges and give them to Margaret Ward at upcoming meetings. Used ink cartridges help us save the cost of printing the newsletter each month. Thank you!

SUMMER CHALLENGE This year our Summer Challenge will be to make a Christmas Ornament. You must make it yourself. It can be any size, or shape, out of the material of your choice. Bring the completed ornament to our September 19, 2013 meeting. Oh yes, there will be prizes. Sew get your creative juices flowing and sewing. Sew good luck to all and have a great summer. 6 3-D VALENTINE WALL HANGING! In Sept we will devote 4 months to making a fun 3-D Valentine Wall Hanging for all who are interested. This is your chance to experience piecing with "prairie points". At the September meeting you will need to bring 5 inch squares...pink to red...to exchange with others so you can have a variety of fabric. The wall hanging calls for 85 squares. All those who bring squares to exchange will receive a green ticket for a drawing for a fat quarter...yippee!! I will not be copying directions to make this wall hanging prior to the Sept meeting. I have found that people change their minds as to commitment and then the money is wasted on extra copies. So please bring a self-addressed envelope with a new stamp inside and I will mail you the entire directions after the meeting. Jacque Formica VILLAGE QUILTERS LIBRARY If you checked out books from the VQ library, they must be returned at the September meeting. VQ books can be identified by the red tape on the spine and the house stamp on the inside front. I inventoried the library. Please check your shelves for these 6 unaccounted books: Awash With Color, More Nickel Quilts, New Twist on Strips n Curves, Piecing the Piece O Cake Way, Shirley Botsford s Daddy s Ties, 3 Times the Charm! How to Checkout a Book Only VQ members, NOT guests, may check out books. Find the card for the book. The cards are arranged alphabetically by title. Put your name and the date you checked it out on the card. Put the card in the front of the box. The VQ library table is next to the free table, both of which have books on them. Please don t them mix up. There will be a sale of withdrawn books at the September meeting. Please note that the library and I will not be at the October library. Here are 3 new additions to the library: Fresh Vintage Sewing Hexa-Go-Go 101 Fabulous Small Quilts by Joanna Figueroa by Tacha Bruecher Daria Phair dbphair@gmail.com SAMARITAN WOMEN'S PROJECT QUILTS If you have a quilt in progress for the Samaritan Women's Home please bring it to the September meeting! Thanks to all who are sewing for this worthy cause. Patty Wheeler and Norma Petersen

We are looking forward to our next quilting year!!!! Ann Blais anblais@comcast.net Marie Anderson mlanderson99@comcast.net BALTIMORE BOUNTY A VILLAGE QUILTERS CHALLENGE QUILT OPPORTUNITY When someone says Baltimore, what comes to mind? Baltimore has a bountiful heritage that residents love to celebrate. Village Quilters challenges you to create a quilt using any technique (pieced, applique, or combination) that illustrates what Baltimore means to you. You can use themes from historic Baltimore, modern Baltimore, colorful Baltimore, sports teams, landmarks, industries, festivals, etc. Just think of all the possibilities and let your imagination run wild. There are some size requirements for this challenge. Both length and width must be between 30 and 36 inches. The quilt orientation can horizontal or vertical, and the shape can be rectangular or square. Complete instructions are on our web site. PROJECT LINUS I hope everyone had time for some charity sewing since our last meeting. Lucy Smith has been very busy, sewing over 40 charity quilt tops since our June meeting! Please remember to bring any Project Linus quilts you worked on over the summer to the September meeting. Let s begin another year of generosity and giving to children who need our quilted hugs. BLOCK OF THE MONTH Stephanie Sanidas Everyone has been working on many projects over the summer, quilted or otherwise, but just a reminder - if you'd like to participate in the BoM that was included in the Summer newsletter - Flock of Geese. Bring your blocks to the September meeting where we will be drawing "your name!" For new members: Each month in the newsletter, VQ has a Block of the Month pattern and color/fabric specifications for consistency. Any member can participate by making 1 or more blocks and enter your name into a raffle at the meeting for each block you make. Please make sure to measure/square up your block to the size given in pattern. Depending on the number of participants/size of blocks, there could be one or more winners.
