VILLAGE QUILTERS NEWSLETTER May 2013 Next meeting: Thursday, May 16 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE The secret of a good sermon is to have a good beginning and a good ending; and to have the two as close together as possible. George Burns Last week my husband and I went to our monthly wine club tasting. Frank enjoys learning about wines and has even made wine. This month s meeting had a twist. An expert told us about the joys of Oregonian Pinot Noir, and she hardly took time to breathe. Well, there was just too much information. This was my inspiration for noting the importance of brevity. Brevity is harder than being lengthy. April s guest, Nancy Bills, shared her fantastic log cabins, pineapple and flying geese and told us these were done without templates and foundations and there are NO Y seams! There was brevity about her technique. Her lecture showed us that we can get done what we need to do and, if not exactly doing it in a brief period of time, we can use some clever tricks to create a wonderful quilt. I sure hope Nancy can come back to teach us in detail how she does it! Our charity quilts distribution in growing! Our goal of 121 (yes, we now have a new member) is close There is still time. We can do it! Our guild needs you to volunteer. We need a Vice President, and someone to help with hospitality or to learn about newsletter mailings. Think about it and get a little more involved. I promise you it will be fun and worth it! Just ask a board member. She will be brief. May is spring s way of saying. Let the party begin! Dori MAY PROGRAM The speaker at our May meeting is Debby Kratovil. 1

If you are interested in being on the waiting list please let Patty Wheeler know. June Tea Our June tea is quickly approaching. Remember that for our tea-style luncheon in June we need everyone to bring finger foods. Little sandwiches, deviled eggs, scones, muffins, cookies and other small items are good choices. And, we need savory as well as sweet items! There will be a food sign-up sheet out at the May meeting to help us make the menu well rounded. Since we are selling tickets for guests we want this event to be particularly nice. There will be a silent auction at the tea so if you have any items to donate for this please bring them to Patty Wheeler in May. Bingo Please take a look at the Bingo Volunteer Sign-Up sheet to see how you can help with this important event. Patty Wheeler Bingo Publicity Please forward any information you think I should follow up on regarding Quilt Bingo Publicity to me at quilteddancer@comcast.net. Remember to pick up some flyers at the front table to spread around your community and at your Quilt Show visits. Claire Malczyn 2
Raffle Quilt How about volunteering to take our lovely Raffle Quilt to other guild meetings to sell raffle tickets. The quilt will be raffled at our December meeting. See Lynn Hastmann to volunteer. Or as a new member, dues are prorated according to the months left in the membership year (September - June). As always, send any address or changes my way. RAFFLE BASKET Cindy Reisberg CAReisberg@comcast.net Our gorgeous displays of goodies are enticing more of us to buy tickets. Please remember to bring in your extra goodies to help replenish the baskets. We raised $136 for the guild in April. Janet Ruehl PROJECT LINUS UPDATE At the April meeting, we collected 9 completed quilts, 6 quilt tops, batting, and fabric (yardage and cut squares) for Project Linus. So far this year we have donated 86 quilts to children in need, 75 quilts to Project Linus and 11 quilts to Binky Patrol (check out for details). Let s all challenge ourselves to reach Dori s goal of 121 donation quilts by June. Village Quilters work year round to prepare for our annual Community Service Day. Please consider volunteering to cut fabric, sew quilt top kits, machine quilt, or bind quilts. Thank you for sharing your sewing talents to comfort children. Stephanie Sanidas 3
NOVEMBER 2013 FALL RETREAT WEST RIVER This year is our 15th anniversary of retreats being held at the West River Conference Center. The retreat is from November 14th - 17th. The cost is $237.00, which includes the cost of a workshop and the kit that goes with the workshop. A deposit of $ must be made by the June meeting to hold your spot. If you are already signed up and won't be able to attend, please me ASAP. Kits for the workshop will have to be made up ahead of time and I will need an exact count. For those of you already signed up, Friday's dinner is still open, as well as some of the favors. See me if you are interested. FOOD DONATIONS Sharon Coffman Only two more meetings before our summer break. Please be extra generous to make up for not giving during July and August. Happy stitching. Kay Worley VIRGINIA CAMPIONE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND I recently received a thank you card from the Campione Family for the hand made donations that were supplied by guild members for its fundraiser last fall. The card contained the following: "Thank you for your support of the Virginia Campione Memorial Scholarship. Even as we all struggle through difficult economic times, your unwavering dedication is an inspiration to our family and to the recipients of your generosity. You are directly responsible for some very good things happening to some very good people. We hope to see you at our next fundraiser! With gratitude, The Campione Family" Please note that this thank you card and the fundraiser coordinator is the son of Virginia. Some of Virginia's friends started this scholarship fund and her son has continued organizing the event after the first year. Virginia's son, his wife, infant and toddler are all temporarily living with my friend (his aunt) after losing their home in Breezy Point from Hurricane Sandy, yet he is determined to continue with this fundraiser that truly does do good for upcoming college students as well as cancer victims. If someone would like to donate their efforts by making a handmade item, I will have fabric with me at the May meeting that you can take (you can also see a picture of the quilt I made last year). Again, thank you as all your donations are appreciated by the Campione Family and me. Sincerely, Claire Malczyn SHOWCASING OUR TALENTS: MAY VQ MONTHLY DISPLAY QUILT Orca Bay Mystery was designed by Bonnie Hunter and offered as an on-line mystery in November The pattern was presented weekly in eight parts. Although the piecing was intense, the process was easy with Bonnie s explicit instructions. It was free and used a lot of stash! I love scrappy but it does not come naturally to me. See more about Bonnie: 4 Sheri Thompson
OCTOBER 2013 FALL RETREAT OCEAN CITY, MARYLAND It was suggested during the Spring Retreat that maybe we could have an additional retreat in the fall at the same location. We also have use of the health Spa and indoor swimming pool. There is room for a few more if anyone is interested. I am listed in our VQ directory. Cell: or lulucycles@aol.com Linda Murrow BLOCK OF THE MONTH Sharon Adams won the 13 Attic Windows April Block of the Month. I hope you will try to participate! Congratulations to Mimi Dietrich who has been named International Association of Professional Quilters Teacher of the Year 2013! HOSPITALITY "Many Hands Make Light Work." Many thanks to the Kitchen Helpers who have been helping out at our monthly meetings. If you have not helped out in the kitchen this year, there is still time! There are definitely slots open in June. (Please see below.) Thank you also to Beth Bohac and Cindy McIntyre who donated large and sturdy paper plates for use at our luncheons. We could still use some dessert plates and also smaller paper napkins. 9 The Magical Quilt Block Like to Experiment? Here is a fun block that comes together like magic. If you have any questions, ask me to show you my magical quilt! Dori Cut Square A inches. Draw an X on the wrong side of the square Square A Cut Square B with a coordinating fabric 7 inch square. Square B 1. Lay Square A on top of Square B right sides together and sew a ¼ inch seam all the way around the two pieces. YES Leave NO opening! 2. Carefully lift the two squares apart and cut on the X of Square A. Be careful NOT to cut Square B. 3. Fold out the four triangles of Square A and now you have a new 9 ½ inch square. We can call this Square C! (I think we re doing Algebra.) Make as many of these as you like. If Square A has an X on it, draw the X on Square B next time. Then cut and flip square B. Experiment! Have fun and in a flash you will have a very interesting quilt top. You could start out with smaller squares and practice using your scraps. Finished block - Square C - should look like this! Make a bunch of them it s fun! NOTE: You lose the points when sewing blocks together. 9
