1 VILLAGE QUILTERS NEWSLETTER Next Meeting February 19, 2015 FROM THE PRESIDENT'S WORKROOM Recently, I came across a wonderful definition of snow a four year old boy when asked how he thought snowflakes were made replied snowflakes are made out of paper and winter. What a wonderful imagination he has, and the thought creates such a fantastic visual reality for me. I can just see those flakes fluttering down and would love to try and capture that vision in a quilt block. Stay tuned!! January is just finishing up; I have been sorting and cleaning my workroom. In doing so, I unearthed a number of UFOs, many of which could be used for donation quilts. Figuring I might as well do something with them, I put my Bonnie Hunter Mystery Quilt aside, and have now finished up ten quilts. A few I was just binding for someone else, others needed a serious dose of TLC I mean really how often do you check to make sure that the bobbin thread is truly doing its job? Double quilting is so awesome!! A few came to me from someone else s UFO pile, but my goal was to get as many done by the end of the month as I could. There is a lovely pile of finished quilts by the door ready to take in for donation. I pat them with satisfaction every time I walk by Never having written a blog, I am now doing the handwritten equivalent for a dear friend who loves to quilt. She will be hospitalized for at least a month; I promised to write her every day. Keeping a greeting card next to my sewing machine allows me to jot down little snippets of my daily quilting adventures. Today s snippets included relearning how to paper piece. While I really enjoy paper piecing, it is not an intuitive craft for me and I have to review my notes each time I do a new project. I actually woke up in the middle of last night saying oh, that is what an Add a Quarter inch ruler is for. The previous day I moaned about breaking needles I went through three in less than two hours. I was making a My Little Pony yoga mat carrier bag and a Dora the Explorer messenger bag for my granddaughters those big zippers are really needle killers!! By the way, those were the Superior TopStitch needles. Oh, well. That will teach me to use good needles when I am putting in mega zippers Hope to see you all on the 19 th as we work together on various projects and enjoy our bagged lunches. I promise to bring some of my favorite chocolate peppermint cookies to share. Yum! 1

2 CHARITY SEWING MONTH It has been our guild s tradition to spend one of our winter meetings working on quilts to donate to charity. It is always a joy to share our skills and an extra special feeling to know our good works will warm a child or an adult who will benefit in some way. Along with sewing quilts for Linus and The Center for Pregnancy Concerns, we are adding something new. You will be invited to make or take a kit for a Beads of Courage bag. More information about these bags will be available from Beth Bohac at the meeting. We look forward to seeing many of you at our February meeting. Come with a sewing machine OR come with willing hands to cut, iron, tie or hand sew. Our quilts will leave The Lodge and find a home to warm body and soul. Quilt kits will be available to take along and continue your good works at home. CHARITY SEWING FOR CENTER FOR PREGNANCY CONCERNS FLEA MARKET So far, we have about 15 quilts (mostly for girls) completely finished for the next delivery to the pregnancy center. I hope to have about 10 Quick Strippie Quilt (example of pattern shown here) kits for boys to hand out at February s Charity Sewing meeting. You can sew it at the meeting or at home (please bring it back the next month). It would be a big help if you or a friend could quilt it, attach the binding, and sew on the provided label. Thank you! FEBRUARY RAFFLE QUILT Renee Fatseas from Southern Comfort Quilters will be at our February meeting displaying their raffle quilt Gypsy Star. Take a break from your sewing and stop by and purchase a raffle ticket! Paulette and Dori Program Co-chairs SPOOL SPIRIT WORKSHOP Lucky you! We still have a couple of spots left in Norma Campbell s fun workshop. The class will be held on February 25 (snow date February 26) at Trinity United Methodist Church in Catonsville. See Dori or Paulette for sign-up, supply list and directions. The class costs $40 and that includes the pattern and a few other goodies. Come and set up at 9 AM - class begins at 9:30 AM. We will finish up by 3:30 PM. What a great way to spend a winter day quilting with friends and learning, too! 3

4 CHARITY FOOD DONATIONS The good thing about cold weather is that it gets the creative juices flowing. Sewing--in all forms--- is better in the winter than any other time. As you sew and watch tv, take the time to contemplate how blessed you are and how much you have. Please remember the less fortunate and remember to bring food donations to our Feb. meeting. Thanks for your support. WEST RIVER FALL RETREAT Kay Worley This year the Fall Retreat will be held November 12th-15th. The cost is $ A deposit of $ needs to be to me by the June Village Quilters meeting. If I do not receive a deposit by that date, I will be replacing you with someone on the waiting list. Sharon Coffman FEBRUARY KITCHEN HELPERS Thank you to all who helped in January, with special thanks to Joan Costello, who straightened and rearranged our cabinet. In so doing, Joan was hit by some items that had been placed on top of the cabinet. She seemed to be all right, and continued to clean out the cabinet. Remember, in February we bring bag lunches because of charity sewing. Therefore, we do not need lunchtime helpers. Cleanup of coffee pots, etc. is still going to happen before we leave to finish sewing or to go home (afternoon helpers). One or two people are all we will need for this. Joan Costello has signed up to be the morning helper. 5 PROJECT LINUS UPDATE At the January meeting we collected fabric from Sue Scott and a completed Project Linus quilt from Dori Batavick. Preparations have begun for my favorite meeting of the year, the community service sewing day on February 19th. Ellicott City longarm quilter, Maria O Haver, generously quilted 40 Project Linus for our guild in January. These quilts will be ready for binding at the meeting, so our hand sewers need to bring their hand sewing kit. Machine sewing projects for Project Linus will also be available to work on. Bring your sewing machine to sew quilt top kits, machine quilt or add binding to finished quilts. Remember to bring your machine s walking foot for these tasks, along with other necessary sewing items. You can also bring rotary cutting supplies (rotary cutter, cutting mat, and ruler) to cut squares. There will also be quilts to tie and all materials will be supplied for this task. Stephanie Sanidas LIBRARY Happy Valentine s Day! With all of the wonderful gift books added to the library (thank you to those who have donated the books), I have withdrawn titles that haven t circulated well and put them up for sale. Come to February s charity sewing/treasure sale for great deals. 6 FEBRUARY BLOCK OF THE MONTH The winners of the January 2015 string pieced foundation blocks were Pat Lieske and Chris Fittro. Looking forward to seeing what fun quilt arrangements they come up with! The instructions for the February block which is found at the end of the newsletter, is called "Diet Candy" or "If You Can't Eat Em', Join Em'! Again, very easy, just preview your layout before sewing all the pieces together. After doing the VQ BoM for 2 years, I asked for a volunteer, and am happy to report Jacque Formica stepped up and happily offered to take over after June. Thanks Jacque! Barb McMahon INCH SQUARE EXCHANGE This month we will exchange 5" squares of plaid 100% cotton fabrics. As usual, we exchange after lunch, before clean-up. Everyone who wants to do this is welcome, even if you've never done it before. We bring 2 sets of 8 squares in each month's fabric type. Thank you. BINGO Kathy Appleton Our next Bingo is Friday, October 23, Sign-up sheets for quilts, door prizes and jobs will be available at every spring meeting. If you have any questions about the event or the specifics of a job please see Patty Wheeler. "Save the Date" flyers will be available at the February meeting and tickets will go on sale in April. Quilts will be due to Patty Wheeler by the end of August. If you are making a Bingo quilt, please make sure that you put a label on it. At a minimum the label should say Village Quilters Bingo 2015 and have the name(s) of the makers. You can include any other information you desire (name of pattern, fabrics, etc.). 7 MILLTOWN QUILTERS BUS TRIPS The bus trips for 2015 will all leave from the park and ride outside the Presbyterian Church (route 108 and Presbyterian Circle) at 7:30 am and return by 7:30 pm. The price has increased to $48 per person, which includes the bus, driver's tip and entrance to the show, and for the shopping trip it includes lunch at Shady Maple Smorgasbord. Checks are payable to: Milltown Quilters. The first trip is on Friday March 13, to Lancaster, PA for the AQS, American Quilter's Society show. We will also make a quick stop at the Stouffer's Outlet. We need to have 40 people signed up and paid by Friday, February 6 or the trip will be cancelled. Our next trip is Friday September 18 to Oaks, PA for the Pennsylvania Quilt Extravaganza show. We need 40 people signed up and paid by Friday August 7 or the trip will be cancelled. Our last and most popular one is the Lancaster shopping trip on Friday October 16. We go to Souder's Fabrics, Shady Maple Smorgasbord for lunch and then to the Kitchen Kettle area where there are several more fabric stores.
