VILLAGE QUILTERS NEWSLETTER Next Meeting December 19, 2013 FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK Again, thanks to you all for a great Bingo and a big thanks to Patty for once again putting on a great night. We will be having some great speakers. The by-laws have been updated and will be in the newsletter for your consideration and at a later date we will vote on the changes. We have been running short of cold drinks. Have added more spots so please check the list for January and see if you can sign up. Don't forget your 3 fat quarters or 1 yard of quilt shop fabric for our game at the Christmas Party. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR! J.ELTON CHRISTMAS PARTY REMINDER At the party on December 18 we will be playing our version of the "Right- Left" game. Bring 3 fat quarters or 1 yard of lovely fabric from one of our local quilt shops. Please wrap your package. The game is fun but it is more fun if everyone LOVES the fabric they have at the end. DRESDEN PLATE RAFFLE QUILT The 2013 raffle quilt affectionately called 1930 s Dresden Plate is going to be given away at our December 19 th meeting. If you haven t already turned in the tickets you were trying to sell or need to buy more tickets you can t wait any longer. Congratulations, in advance, to the lucky winner.
WINTER BLUES GONE Guild Talent Share January 2014 is just around the corner!! Traditionally January is when guild members get to share their talents. Now is the time to show your stuff! We need a few talented quilters to demonstrate to members. Lynn Hastmann has generously agreed to show us how ELECTRIC Quilter (EQ) works. That is one station filled! We could use at least four more members to volunteer to share their talents. Think about it it will be a lot of fun for everyone. Please either Paulette or Dori with your ideas. Join us for our By-The-Yard Sale! In January our guild will be holding a homespun flea market right at the Lodge called a By-the-Yard Sale! As of this newsletter, five members have told us that they would like to set up a table with treasures you won t be able to resist! So far Janet Elton, Norma Campbell, Barbara Schaeffer, Mary Brown and Claire Malczyn are planning to be open for business. Sharing a table with a friend would be a good idea, too. There is NO cost to do this. We could use more so stuff, so please let Paulette Chellis (chellis8428@comcast.net) or Dori Batavick (doribata@gmail.com) know if you would like to sell items at the By-the-Yard Sale. Items can be anything you want to sell and they can be sewing related or not. AQS ULTIMATE GUILD CHALLENGE If you want to participate in our challenge please go to Click on the "Announcements" tab and then click on "Baltimore Bounty Challenge". The directions should pop up and you can print them. At the December meeting there will be a sign-up list so that we get an idea of how many people are participating (failure to sign up does not mean that you miss out, it is just to give us an idea). Quilts for the challenge are due at the March meeting when we will vote for our 8 favorites that will then be entered in the August 2014 AQS show in Grand Rapids. Put on your creativity caps and enjoy sewing!! THE SAMARITAN WOMEN'S PROJECT Thank you to everyone who helped us make quilts for The Samaritan Women's home in Baltimore. In November Norma Petersen, Daria Phair and Patty Wheeler delivered 21 quilts. They were more than thrilled to have them. By the way, if there are still any partially finished kits or quilts out there from this project it is not too late! Whenever you finish them just return them to Norma Petersen and we will get them delivered.
MEMBERSHIP Just one little change for the directory. Please correct Donna Turner's phone number. It's (434) Merry Christmas to all, Cindy Reisberg BINGO 2013 REPORT Bingo was a resounding success! We made $7, to help keep our guild running until the next Bingo in 2015! Thanks again to everyone who donated quilts, table runners, door prizes, raffle and auction items and time! Patty Wheeler SPACES STILL AVAILABLE FOR THE Mimi and Norma Workshop! On January 23, 2014 (snow date 1/24) Village Quilters own Mimi Dietrich and Norma Campbell will hold a workshop. Members will be making a 30 wall hanging called Welcome Home. All skill levels are welcomed! The cost for the workshop is $45 and there are still three openings. This workshop will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, 2100 Westchester Avenue, Catonsville, MD. Come for a day of quilting fun! Most students will finish the top in class OR at the top of the class! Dori Batavick (doribata@gmail.com) or Paulette Chellis (chellis8428@comcast.net) to sign-up. Reminder: Coming Events A Workshop in Fall of 2014 It s Never Too Early In October of 2014 our guild is hosting a workshop with Shirley Mandler. She creates wonderful Christmas Tree Skirts and so can you!! While you are shopping this year, put aside some extra holiday fabric when the sales hit so that next year --- You will be ready!! Supply lists are available. Sign-up will begin at the February meeting. SUNSHINE At the meeting on 11/21/13 we were told that Bev Landis was sick. We hope she is feeling better and back to Village Quilters soon. As of December 2 nd, Libbie Rollman was still in the hospital. Please continue to send cards to her home. I think cards from our Village Quitters family would be a pleasant surprise.
5 CHARM EXCHANGE The fabric choice for December is novelty fabric. It has been decided that each participant will bring in two separate fabric choices of ten (10) 5 charms to be exchanged and bringing home twenty (20) different charms. The following is a list of monthly color fabric choices: January = white/off white February = pink/red March = green April = yellow/orange May = pastel June = blue/violet Claire Malczyn VILLAGE QUILTERS LIBRARY Merry Christmas! Here are 3 additions to the VQ library: (From left to right): Hand-Dyed Quilts by Marquetta Bell-Johnson, More 90-Minute Quilts: 20+ Quick and Easy Projects with Triangles and Squares by Meryl Ann Butler, and The Quilt Maniac s Playbook: Fuel for the Quilt Imagination by Nicole C. Chambers. Daria Phair dbphair@gmail.com EMPTY PRINTER CARTRIDGES Please continue to bring in your empty computer printer cartridges, which are recycled & help defray printing costs. Each month on the front table, there will be a basket or box to drop them into.
RAFFLE BASKETS The November raffle baskets were won by: Norma Hong Sue Scott Stephanie Sanidas Barbara Schafer was the lucky winner of Barbara Austin's sweatshirt jacket that she donated for the baskets. We raised $142 in November making it our most successful raffle to date. Way to go guild members. Each $ supports our programs!! Please bring in items for the raffle baskets in December. It was suggested that Christmas related items could be brought along to go in our baskets to make each one extra special for the Christmas holiday. Janet Ruehl FOOD DONATIONS I want to thank everyone for the food donations and toys at the November meeting. Please be even more generous in December. I will be accepting our usual canned goods and Toys for Tots--I checked to make sure we were ok to deliver more toys on the 19th and it is fine. Please remember all the little ones in our community on Christmas morning: your gift may be all they receive. Have an enjoyable December. Kay Worley DECEMBER HOSPITALITY HELPERS Thanks to everyone who has signed up to help. We still need people to sign up to help in the kitchen and to bring more sodas. We will have the sign-up sheets on the table as you come in. Thanks, Ann and Marie Ann Blais anblais@comcast.net Marie Anderson mlanderson99@comcast.net Inclement Weather Policy: If BALTIMORE COUNTY schools are CLOSED, we WILL NOT meet. There is a Hereford zone in Baltimore County that is further north. If schools are closed ONLY in the Hereford zone, we WILL meet. If school is LATE, we WILL meet.
PROJECT LINUS We can sum up the charity donations at the November meeting in one word, BOUNTIFUL! We were overwhelmed by the donations of 22 finished quilts, 7 quilt tops, and fabric for Project Linus. Special thanks to Kathy Appleton, Robin Dodd, Dorothy Ferguson, Jacque Formica, Mitzie Lepka, Eleanor McKinley, Sandy Newsome, Cookie Opplinger, Marge Scallio, and Nancy Winchester. During this season of thanksgiving, I want to convey how much I appreciate the time and materials donated for community outreach. Stephanie Sanidas BLOCK OF THE MONTH Thanks to everyone who made one (or many!), blocks for the Quilts of Valor. They will be sewn together and quilted by the QoV Foundation volunteers, who will distribute them to our deserving service men and women. The 2 winners of the quilt shop gift certificates were Mitzie Lepka-she generously made 21 blocks!, and Barb McMahon (me :)! Our December block is called Peppermint Pinwheels. Quick and easy for the busy holiday season, they can be made in Christmas red & white on white or Christmas green and white on white. The winner can tea/dye over if it's too bright for your taste, or you can alter the block if you want a more difficult or exciting look-it's fun to check your books, magazines and YouTube for various pinwheel examples. Barb McMahon SPRING 2014 RETREAT I am starting to prepare for the spring retreat to be held on March 10th to March 13th, If anyone is interested please let me know by lulucycles@aol.com. It will be held at the Clarion Hotel in Ocean City.
MYSTERY QUILT The mystery quilt will start in January. It is NOT a scrap quilt but could be a STASH REDUCER. I thought I would send the quantities of fabric necessary for a twin or lap size quilt. This way you could be pulling fabric from your hidden areas before January. Now...feel free to make any size you wish. I liked Gyleen Fitzgerald's approach...stop making it when you get tired of making it!! You may make a place mat, a table runner or bed runner. All you over achievers could make a 'double-wide' king quilt!!! Anyway you will need 5 coordinated fabrics. Hey...you can use 'UN-coordinated' fabric if you wish. I don't know how it will look...but interesting will probably be your best compliment. Fabric Descriptions Twin Size Lap Size Dark cool color: such as green, blue, etc. 4 yds 3 yds (includes binding) Med cool color: This would look good as a 1 5/8 yds 1 1/4 yds light shade of the Dark Cool color Med warm color: such as yellow, red, coral, etc 1 3/4 yds 1 yd Very Light Background Fabric: whatever you like 1 3/4 yds 1 3/8 yds Light Warm Fabric: use a lighter shade of the color 5/8 yds 3/8 yds used for the Med Warm Fabric Happy Quilting...Jacque Formica
Village Quilters Block of the Month December 2013 Peppermint Pinwheels A really fast block - red or green peppermints - to finish before the holidays!! Use White on White and either a red or green Christmas fabric. Cut 2-5" White on White Squares Cut 2-5" Predominately Green OR Red Squares Layer the WoW and Green/Red Squares right sides together, mark a diagonal line, and sew a scant 1/4" on either side of the drawn line, to make half square triangles. Cut on the drawn line. Open and press toward the dark fabric. Sew the four HST together to make a pinwheel. Be careful to keep your points. If you need further instructions on how to make an accurate pinwheel, please refer to the many written and online sources, or you can contact me. Yummy!!!!! Barb McMahon Ph:
