1 VILLAGE QUILTERS NEWSLETTER Next Meeting October 15, 2015 FROM THE PRESIDENT'S WORKROOM Where has the time gone? Each day starts now with what shall be tackled today? Moving is quite a challenge especially when combined with that word which causes us all to cringe, downsizing!! My new home in Herndon, Virginia, is a townhouse, but quite a bit smaller than what I had in Columbia. While I did gain the luxury of a small garage, it was in exchange for no extra bedroom, no linen closet, no coat closet, no workroom and an apartment-sized washer and dryer. This has created some interesting challenges. Several quilting friends suggested I use the master bed room as my workroom really, where are my priorities? It is now mostly set up, not quite ready to jump back into the quilting world, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. The walk-in closet is huge, with multiple shelves and space for not only a dresser to store stuff, but with a spare wall for an extra desk. What I truly want to know is where did I get all this stuff??? I really need to stop checking out the free table As I unpack, marveling over the treasures I rediscover, I have set aside several patterns for my next several quilts. The goal is to make each of them entirely from my stash. One of the packing tricks I used was huge zip loc bags for each color or genre of my stash makes plopping the Orientals or the reds back in the appropriate storage cubby so much easier. And anyway, I already had each nicely folded and separated according to my eclectic color scheme, so that really saved time. Sorting through my magazines and books was quite a distraction. Note the setting aside several patterns above. However, in the Feb 2015 issue of American Patchwork and Quilting magazine magazine I found a great article on organizing your workspace and realized how well her design fit my needs. All I needed to figure out was where to stash the children s toys I look forward to seeing you all at the Village Quilters BINGO later this month maybe this year you ll win one of those lovely quilts. And I leave you with a gum wrapper truth or dare I found while unpacking which caused me to think quite a bit, if you had no responsibilities, where would you be right now? And a paraphrase of John Burroughs: I hope to find the days too short for all the thoughts I want to think, the walks I want to take, the books I want to read, the quilts I want to make, the places I want to visit and the friends I want to see. Pat Wyatt 1

2 Program News October Joyce Hughes This month Village Quilters welcomes Joyce Hughes whose lecture entitled My Journey into Quilting will inspire us once again. Our guild has a variety of talents and we are always excited to learn more! Joyce is a self taught quilter and fiber artist. She designs pictorial landscapes using raw edge appliqué and thread painting with exciting results. She designs handbags, art bags and art quilts. Her work captures the imagination. Joyce was selected as McCall s Quilt Designer 2012-Professional Category and her work was featured in the magazine s May/June 2013 issue. Check out Joyce s website: joycehughesoriginals.com/home VQ looks forward to welcoming Joyce! BINGO Is Coming Soon! -Your Program Chairs Paulette and Dori Village Quilters BINGO is coming up! Linda Newsom SUNSHINE Please remember to send news of members in need of sunshine to Janet Ruehl so she can share it with the guild. SHOWCASING OUR TALENTS This month Sue Galicki generously volunteered to bring in her quilt to display for all of us to enjoy. This is a special quilt! Sue won a blue ribbon at the Maryland State Fair with this entry. I will have a "newsy" letter in Sue's own words hanging by her quilt. Don't miss reading it at the meeting. Thanks Sue for sharing. 5

6 BLOCK OF THE MONTH - AUTUMN SPLENDOR Okay Ladies...this is your chance to celebrate Halloween with no-cal Corn Candy. Hope you have fun with this month's block. Use all fall colors to be realistic or not-so-realistic! I have added a historical tidbit from a "Quilter's Newsletter" magazine: 1963 October, 31: The Oshkosh Northwestern in Oshkosh, Wisconsin put a local urban legend to the test by having a small group of women spend the night in a room with a crazy quilt that was said to be haunted. Owned by Dora and William Monroe since 1955 but of unknown origin, it came to be known as the Haunted Quilt of Poy Sippi after several family members reported the quilt moved on its own or was "tugged" off beds. The Halloween night test yielded no supernatural activity. Nothing happened...(the story of my life..happy Halloween)...Jacque Formica FALL RETREAT All balances are due to me by the October meeting. Once I give the head count to West River the first week in November, there will be no refunds. Also, there are a few more slots that I need people to sign up for. Please see me if you are interested in volunteering. Sharon Coffman 6
