VILLAGE QUILTERS NEWSLETTER Next Meeting June 19, 2014 FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK As I look over the past year I have many fond memories. From the first I felt most welcome, then to have the honor of being elected President of such a talented group of quilters and friends. As we bring our year to a close I am thankful to all the committee members and volunteers who have assisted and guided me. To all I wish a safe summer with hopes of always finding enough yardage of that special fabric. With humble regards, Janet Elton June Tea News Our June Tea will be the end cap of another wonderful VQ year. Tickets for guests are available for $10 each. Call Patty Wheeler to purchase a ticket as soon as possible. We will be setting round tables that seat 8 for the tea. If you would like name place cards put at a table for your group please call or Patty Wheeler with your list. You do not have to fill a table to request that seats be labeled. Please get your requests in by June 15. Walking Quilt Show Your Stuff We will be showing off our American pride this June with a walking Patriotic Quilt and Baltimore Album show. Many of our members are on the schedule but please call Dori Batavick or Paulette Chellis to sign up. It is not too late! 1

June Program - Kristin Schenning, Director of Education for the Maryland Historical Society will be our June Tea guest of honor. Kristin organized the "Stitching History" project that mirrored the one set by Mary Pickersgill, the Baltimore flag maker that sewed the original flag that flew over Fort McHenry back in Kristin will be giving us an update on the project. Many VQ members participated in this event. Special Raffles! This year our Tea will feature very special Tea related raffle baskets AND a quilt made by our own Norma Campbell! Remember to bring along some extra $$. You won t want to miss out on these raffles. Donations for the Tea Raffle Baskets will be accepted at the June meeting. Look in your cupboards for the good stuff to give away Program Chairs Paulette Chellis and Dori Batavick MEMBERSHIP This month, after five years, I am stepping down as Membership Chair. The greatest benefit was being the first person to greet you every third Thursday. In my second year, with the help of Kimberly Worley, we were able to provide you with photo directories. I find the pictures of our members very helpful, don't you? Dues for are due by September 2014, and are $30. The renewal form is attached and should be given (or mailed) to Linda Newsom, VQ's new Membership Chair. Linda is in the directory if you have any questions. Here's an update for your directory -- Fran Noyes has a new address - FranNoyes@gmail.com. Thank you for your support during my tenure as Membership Chair. SUNSHINE Sew on, Cindy Reisberg On Tuesday, May 27th Pat Koutz had emergency double bypass surgery. Joan Foster said she went to see Pat and she feels much better and is coming along nicely. When Pat is discharged from the hospital she will be going to her daughter's home to recuperate. Please keep Pat in your thoughts and prayers. Please remember to send news of members in need of sunshine to Janet Ruehl so she can share it with the guild. 2

WINNERS The VQ raffle baskets for May 2014 raised $101 for the treasury. Thank you guild members! The winners were: Kathy Appleton, Leslie Moeller and Sue Grandizio. The Name badge winner was Chris Fittro. CHARITY FOOD DONATIONS Thanks for all the food donations that you have given throughout the year. Since we will not be meeting during the summer months, please be extra generous. See you at the tea. 4 TAKE-N-GIVE BOX Introduced just this year, the Take-N-Give Box contains fabric that members can use for any charity project. Claire Malczyn has been handling this project and is looking for someone to continue with this project since she is moving to North Carolina. This project only entails bringing the box to meetings and finding appropriate fabric from the free table. 5 CHARM EXCHANGE The color for June is blue/violet. Claire Malczyn PROJECT LINUS UPDATE I am extremely proud to report that Village Quilters has once again exceeded their charity goal by donating 126 Project Linus quilts this year! Congratulations to everyone for making this accomplishment possible. At the May meeting, nine completed quilts, two quilt tops, batting and backing fabric donations were collected. At our June tea, please consider taking home a charity project to work on during the summer months. Members are invited to select a quilt kit to sew or finish and bring back in September. Stephanie Sanidas RECIPE REQUEST KALE AND CABBAGE SLAW Shred thinly one cabbage (I like Savoy) Thinly slice a bunch of Brussels Sprouts Chop up a good amount of young kale leaves Add a chopped up sweet onion. Mix all together and add a handful of dried cranberries. When serving, add a handful of pumpkin and sunflower seeds a couple teaspoons of celery seed, salt and pepper. I use a mix of homemade lemon vinaigrette and poppy seed or Vidalia onion dressing, on the light side. Don't put the dressing on any sooner than you must before serving. Submitted by Nancy Winchester 4

LIBRARY I love it when members check out Village Quilters library books, a bounty of ideas! For the benefit of our new members, here is how you check out a book. Find the book s card, which is filed alphabetically in the box by title. Write your name under Name and the date under Out, then put the card in the FRONT of the box. Enjoy the book. When you bring it back, put the return date under In and file the card alphabetically under the title. The loan period is no more than 2 months, unless you check it out in June (that s this month!), when you have the whole summer to make a quilt based on a pattern in the book. ;-> Here are new additions to the library: (From left to right): a) Elm Creek Quilts; Quilt Projects Inspired by the Elm Creek Quilt Novels by Jennifer Chiaverini & Nancy Odom. b) Petal by Petal; Appli-bond Flowers by Joan Shay. c) The Quilt That Walked to Golden; Women and Quilts in the Mountain West by Sandra Dallas. d) Seasonal Quilting; A Year in Stitches by Cheryl Fall. Daria Phair dbphair@gmail.com BLOCK OF THE MONTH Nice to see so many pretty 30's Pinwheel Blocks at our last meeting! The two winners should have a great incentive to make some beautiful quilts! Winners - Joan Foster chose the 15 blocks with multicolored fabrics and Pat Koutz took the 24 individually colored ones. Vera Hall received a gift certificate for completing a quilt using the 15 Peppermint Pinwheels blocks she won in December She made additional blocks and incorporated them with the pinwheels, to make a very pretty full size quilt! The BoM for June is on a little different spin - hope you like this idea. Please read the attached instructions - and bring your finished items in for display, at the June Tea Party meeting then you can take them home and keep for your own pleasure or give away as a nice (but not too intensive of a project) gift to someone. 5 Barb McMahon

Workshops this summer and fall! Sign up NOW! Postcard Making 101 July 14 at Trinity Methodist Church in Catonsville. Class members can set up at 9 AM. Christmas Tree Skirt Class We still have openings in our Christmas Tree Skirt class on October 15! See one of us for details. Program Chairs Paulette Chellis and Dori Batavick ATTENTION SEWERS, QUILTERS, FABRIC HOARDERS Mary Martin is working on an Out Reach Project for Christmas. 7 Village Quilters Block of the Month June 2014 "Vintage Hankies" You Choose: the Size - Unfinished or Finished - Background & Color - Project This month's BoM will be a bit different - a personal mini challenge! When I was looking through books and magazines, patterns, and online at Pinterest, quilt websites, etc., there were so many varieties, sizes, settings and background colors of quilts and blocks that used handkerchiefs. If you have hankies that belonged to you, your Mom, or that have passed down through your family, you may not want to part with them. Or, if you just have one you've liked enough to keep because it's "pretty"... they may even be fragile The BoM challenge is to make something out of it, or them - doesn't have to be an entire quilt, or even a wall hanging - it could be a block, a framed item, a potpourri holder, pillow or clothing decoration. We probably won't even have a raffle drawing for anything - your own creative item could be something you keep - to give to your granddaughter, a friend, as a surprise-for-no-reason, or thank you to someone, or keep for yourself as a special antique. This doesn't necessarily need to be a major project - just made between May-June meeting. Because it could be small, be just one block, or even unfinished to put into another project, it can be done in one month, and a challenge to yourself to try something different! We will display what you have made, and return it to you at the end of the Tea Party meeting. Can't wait to see what your imaginations create! Barb McM 7
