Fairborn Senior Center 325 N. 3rd Street Fairborn, Ohio Visitors Welcome ($10 Speaker Fee) Rita Fishel To Demonstrate Creative Grids This month our speaker is Rita Fishel, nationally known quilter, speaker, author, teacher, and owner of Creations Sew Clever in Chillicothe. Rita will be presenting her highly entertaining and instructive lecture Tool Time. Rita is also offering MVQG members a substantial 15% discount at the meeting and class on Wed. for Creative Grids rulers. So, if you would like any particular Creative Grids rulers, you should let Rita know what her to bring for you. Rita is teaching a workshop on Wed Sept. 13 from 9-4 at the Xenia Community Center, 1265 West Second Street, Xenia. We have room for one more person to attend the workshop; the cost is $30 for members and $40 for non-members. Sign-up is in the back of the room Tuesday evening. Sign-up for the February 2018 retreat will begin as well prior to Tuesday s meeting. Retreat information and the registration form are included in this newsletter and will be available on the Guild website: October Meeting Jesy Anderson, owner/creative director of Needle, Ink, and Thread will be addressing our guild. November Meeting Our speaker and teacher this month is Maggie Ball of Dragonfly Quilts in Bainbridge Island, WA. Maggie is also a nationally known author, speaker, teacher, and quilt artist. She will be teaching a class on Wed. Nov. 13 from 9-4 at Hawker United Church of Christ, 1617 North Longview Street, Beavercreek. Workshop attendees will be making The Ölzii, or never-ending knot,... a traditional Mongolian motif symbolizing the dynamic expanse of the universe and the endless cycles of life and death. It brings long life and prosperity, and drives away wild beasts and evil spirits. This symbol is used widely in Mongolia as decorative art and the pattern for the quilt, including the border, was taken from the door of a Mongolian ger (yurt). You may use either a dark or light background with contrasting Ölzii and border. Shading with similar values in the Ölzii adds to the subtle woven effect. You can see a sample of this quilt top in the back of the room at September s meeting. We still have room for a few more people in the workshop.; the cost is $35 for members and $45 for non-members, plus a $5 pattern fee. December Meeting Our traditional Christmas dinner carry-in. Mary Lou McCormick, Vice President cinemabuff@sbcglobal.net A Note from the President How many were actually quilting during the great eclipse event of late August? I joined my husband along with 8 million other watchers on the road for the best view. If your hobby is astrophotography, then you must go to the best viewing. But as with sewers, the more technical your equipment then more technical difficulties. But we got the pictures! Now, I can concentrate on my Christmas quilting projects. So far, I only have four going at once. It'll be exciting to see what everyone else will be bringing to our "Show and Tell." Maybe we'll see some projects created from our winnings from the August quarter auction. This was a great opportunity for quilters to distribute their excess tools and fabric. Thank you all for participating. Dresden Plate Quilt Challenge In honor of our 2018 Quilt Show Raffle Quilt we are having a Dresden Plate Quilt Challenge. Requirements: 1.) Must use the Dresden Plate pattern in some recognizable way 2.) Must be three layers with a top, batting, and backing 3.) Must be quilted by hand or machine or any combination 4.) Finished size must not be less than 12" X 12" but not greater than 28" X 28". It can be a square or rectangle or circular or any other creative dimension within the size required. 5.) It can be a kit, creative design, or any modification therein. Identify any authors' input or reference. 6.) Quilt Challenge entries will be due at the January 9, Remember, quilts from workshops and challenges are exempt from the five-quilt limit at our May 2018 Quilt Show. Happy quilting!!! Mary Bergseth, President maryoo@ameritech.net Weekly Senior Center Sew-In Days Come join the MVQG Sew-In days at the Fairborn Senior Center for each Monday. We are able to sew from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every week. We have more room to sew and to layout quilts.

3 The price is $2.00 to sew. If you are a member of the Fairborn Senior Center it is $1.00. For those who may be interested, the Fairborn Senior Center has lunch available on Mondays for $3.00. Call on Fridays to sign up for lunch on Monday. All are welcome to attend the weekly sew-ins. Come and get to know other members of the guild. You can come for a few hours or stay all day. Bring a project and sew, sew, sew. You can sew on something for yourself or work on projects for Community Quilts. Bring your sewing machine, tools and supplies, or do some hand work. Irons will be available. No home interruptions!!! Just as with guild meetings, the sew-in will be cancelled if the Senior Center is closed or dates may be changed during holiday periods. You know, the list of things you need to hand make for Christmas gifts. Have you looked at the Guild library list for ideas? We have hundreds of great gift giving ideas from bags and wall hangings to king sized quilts and everything in between! Stop by the Library table at the Guild meeting for a sample or go to the Guild website and scroll through the list. If you find a book on the website you would like Tere to bring to you at the September meeting, send her an with the book title and box letter and she will be sure to bring you that book. Save Your Scraps for Quilt Show Sale Tere Homer and Sheila Rivers are collecting scraps that are at least 8 inches in size for the 2018 MVQG Quilt Show $5 bags of scraps booth. We could sure use your help. If your scraps are threatening to overtake your sewing room, gather up those that are at least 8 inches and bring them to the next Guild meeting. See Tere at the Library table or Sheila and we will take those unruly scraps off your hands! Annual QOV Block Drive (#6!) Our 6th annual QOV block drive will be held at the November guild meeting. As a refresher, guild members make 12-1/2" UNFINISHED quilt blocks in colors of red, white, blue, yellow, gold, and beige (can be bright or country colors) in the pattern of their choice. Each block that is turned in at the November meeting is a chance to win a $10 gift card to an area quilt store (1 block = 1 chance; 5 blocks = 5 chances, etc.). These blocks are used to make Quilts of Valor which are then awarded to area veterans throughout the year. I'll bring the QOV

4 Scrap Box to the next several meetings - feel free to take what you might use, and bring back what you didn't use! Our Fall Sew-In dates are Thursday, September 14, Tuesday, October 17, and Friday, November 17. These are held at The Little Shop of Stitches in Miamisburg from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sign-up sheets will be at the QOV table during the fall guild meetings. If you are interested in awarding a Quilt of Valor to a relative or friend, please let me know! We really want to honor those who are closest to us! Karen Engel jengel1047@aol.com Orphan Block Month: A Big Success Thank you to everyone who brought orphan blocks in July. I cannot believe how many we received! I cannot wait to get these into quilts and show you all what we did together. We are still missing some baggie blocks that are part of a whole quilt. They are Ohio Star blocks. I gave out 20 and only have 11 back. Even if you think you have it, please bring it in so that I can track these last 9. Baggie blocks will pick up again in September. I am having a lot of fun coming up with new blocks that are easy for everyone to do. I welcome your feedback. I am still looking for sewers and quilters who would like to sew the blocks together and/or quilt them. I have had a couple of ladies volunteer and I will get you a kit together shortly.
