JUNE 9, :00 P.M. 325 North Third Street Fairborn, Ohio No July Newsletter Meeting Date July 14, 2015 Visitors Welcome (Speaker Fee: $5.00) Jamie Wallen Presents Trunk Show In conjunction with his three-day residency with the Miami Valley Quilters' Guild, longarm quilting artist and teacher Jamie Wallen will present a lecture and trunk show of his work at the Guild's June meeting. Wallen also is presenting 5 workshops on quilting design suitable for quilting on all types of machines as well as hand quilting. The Sue Nickels' workshops have all moved to a new location: Baymont Inn and Suites, 730 E. Xenia Dr., Fairborn (SR 325 just off I-675). The July 12 workshop features Basic Raw Edge Machine Appliqué. A two-day workshop July 13 and 14 features The Finished Edge with creative techniques for borders and bindings. Sue has reduced her current workshop prices for our guild. Information is available on the website. There will be no "Show and Tell" at the June and July meetings since we have national teachers as speakers with their trunk shows. If you will be traveling this Summer, remember the Row by Row Experience Shop Hop is June 21 through September 8 and now involves all 50 states and most Canadian Provinces. Participating shops offer a free row pattern and some offer kits, fabric plates and postage stamps, coordinating fabrics by Timeless Treasures, t-shirts, pins, caps and totes. Information is available on-line at Mary Bergseth maryoo@ameritech.net A Message from the President May s guild meeting was truly an eye opener. Terry McGarry from the Adriel School shared quite a bit about what the school does for so many children who need help, including foster homes and even adoption. She shared statistics that took your breath away. It s hard to believe so many children are going through very difficult times due to their circumstances. However, there are many with huge hearts who step up and foster children and many times adopt them into their own families. I admire those folks more than you know. On another note, there is something we can do to help. The school has a quilt auction scheduled for Saturday, October 17. The John L. Yoder Activity Center on Adriel's West Liberty campus, 500 N. 2 Spring has sprung, flowers in bloom, I love Spring! Gardening is just about done, spring cleaning yet to do Oh wait, I d rather quilt. Sherry Gorby, President slgflwrpot73@aol.com HELP WANTED NEEDED: 2016 Retreat Chair To all guild members, it is almost June and we still do not have a retreat chairperson for next retreat to be scheduled for February The Retreat cannot happen without leadership. We currently have 5 people who are willing to help but need someone to take the lead on this. It has been suggested that we could have 2 people be co-chairs. This would allow the 2 to share the spot light if you will. Please, please, please consider stepping up. We will now be sewing the 3rd and the 4th Mondays of the month 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Also, we have outgrown the other room and they are moving us into the large room. Yeah!! We will have more room to layout quilts and everyone have our own table. The price will still be $2.00 to sew, and if you are a member of the Fairborn Senior Center it is $1.00. For those who may be interested, the Fairborn Senior Center now has lunch on Mondays for $3.00. You must call on the Friday before to be put on the list for the Monday lunch.

3 All are welcome to attend the monthly sew-ins. Come and get to know other members of the guild. Come for a few hours or stay all day. (Enter from the parking lot and the room is on the left.) Bring a project and sew, sew, sew. You can sew on something for yourself or work on projects for Community Quilts. Bring your sewing machine, tools and supplies, or do some hand work. Irons will be available. No home interruptions!!! Just as with guild meetings, the sew-in will be cancelled if the Senior Center is closed or dates may be changed during holiday periods. Come and have a fun time laugh and sew!!! 4 In general, if you have problems receiving Guild information sent by please contact Ed Chamness by at or call QOV Schedules Three Summer Work Days As of the end of May, we have completed 16 Quilts of Valor and have awarded 12 of them! Many others are in process. We are well on our way to breaking our record of completing 24 QOVs in one year! This is a good thing, as we have our biggest challenge yet coming in November - a group presentation! A request has been made by one of our members for 20 QOVs for a presentation around Veterans' Day this year. We have already awarded one to a WWII veteran who is in failing health, and we have five more that have been put aside to help fulfill this request. We're confident that we can take care of it with your help! Sew-In Days have been set for the summer and we will be working diligently to finish up tops (quilters have already been lined up)! If you are interested in participating in a Sew-In Day, the dates are: Monday, June 15; Wednesday, July 1; Thursday, July 30; and Saturday, August 22. The Sew-Ins are at The Little Shop of Stitches in Miamisburg from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Sign-up sheets will be on the back QOV table at the June, July, and August meetings. Come for a fun day of sewing, eating, and laughing! I will not be at the July guild meeting, so if you have quilts to turn in or are interested in helping with quilting or binding, send me an or call me during the month of July to work out arrangements to meet up. Open to All Due to the fact that only a few members have been participating in the Secret Stitchers program June and July will be your last opportunities be involved. If interest warrants, the Secret Stitcher program may be re-established in the future. It is easy to participate. If you bring a little gift to the quilt guild meeting, then you will leave with a gift! There are no sign-ups or specific assignments of a recipient who will receive the gift you bring.

5 If you don't know what kind of gift to bring, look beside the basket at the next meeting for a card with some suggestions. Include your name within your gift and the recipient will have a different Secret Stitcher each time. You don't have to commit to bringing a gift each month, just anytime you have a little treasure to share. Hopefully this approach will encourage more members to participate. There are hundreds of books to inspire your creativity. Challenge yourself to try something new. See something you like? Send Tere Homer, MVQG Librarian, an at terequilts@yahoo.com. Include the Title, Author and Box Number and she will bring it to you at the next month's meeting. Also, be sure to take a look at the selection Tere brings to the monthly meetings. Books can be checked out for one month and can be renewed by bringing the book in to be re-checked. There is a $1 fee per month for books not returned on time. Start or renew a subscription for $20 per year through the guild and we will be able to earn $5 while sending on the $15 for your subscription. Karen Engel is coordinator for the Fons & Porter project and has forms to be filled out for new or renewal subscriptions. Your love gifts have reached many charitable

6 organizations and unsung heroes. We hope that you will continue to share your time and talents with the needy as well as those who serve to keep us free. The following information should help with questions about what to do and not do. Mind these few rules. Otherwise Have fun! Fabric Do use high quality 100% cotton quilting weight fabric appropriate for the recipient. Please do not use sheets or thin, sparkly, stiff or scratchy fabric. Pattern Do choose a pattern for your community quilt; many free patterns are available on the web, and sometimes we have patterns available upon request. Do Not make rag quilts. They just do not stand up to commercial washing machines. And they have loose bits that could cause choking or other hazards. Sizes Preemie: 18 x 20 Baby: 36 x 36 up to 45 x 54 Lap: 48 x 60 Twin: 72 x90 (Except for Preemie, sizes are approximate.) QOV: minimum 55 x 65; recommended 60 x 80 (Additional QOV information is available at: Binding Do apply neatly by machine when possible. Do not sew by hand please. These quilts are normally washed in a commercial washing machine and hand sewing just doesn t stand up over time and numerous washing. Quilting Do machine quilt in an appropriate design. Do use quality batting. (e.g. Cotton: 80/20 or poly from Pellon, Warm Company, Quilter's Dream, Hobbs) Please Do Not tie quilts. They just do not stand up to commercial washing machines. Washing Please wash your quilt after it is quilted and bound. Use unscented laundry products. We cannot use quilts that have been exposed to pets or tobacco smoke. This information will be available on the Guild website for future reference. Thank you for every single quilt you make to donate to those less fortunate

7 If you buy Hobbs batting please cut the UPC symbol from the batting bag (or bring the whole plastic bag) to be sent in for batting from Hobbs. They have a program that allows us to purchase rolls of batting at unbelievable prices. I would like to use it for both the Quilts of Valor Program as well as the Community Quilts Program. Also, someone asked if I would put something in the newsletter stating what supplies we need for community quilts. Fabric is always appreciated, but we really need backing material. Most of our quilts are lap sized or smaller, so 50 X 60 would work if you are longarm quilting. For those of our quilters who machine quilt, the leftover fabric can be used as binding when cut off the finished quilt and recut into 2 ¼ or 2 ½ strips. Batting is also greatly appreciated. For long-arm quilting we can t use Fairfield products, so Hobbs or Warm and Natural are two that work well. (Leanne will be unavailable for the next few weeks.
