1 MARCH 14, :00 P.M. 325 North Third Street Fairborn, Ohio VISITORS WELCOME REMINDER: All meetings are now SCENT FREE, thank you. March Program Features Fabric Designer Our March speaker is Sharon Holland, a local fabric designer who will conduct a trunk show of quilts made from fabrics she has designed. Some of the quilts have been featured in magazines, some of the quilts were made from free patterns Sharon has on her website, and some of the quilts were made from patterns she sells. Sharon will also discuss the inspiration behind her quilt designs and some of her prints and collections. In addition, we will learn some tips explaining how to submit quilts and projects to magazines. And finally, Sharon will have time for Q & A. Trunk Show/Workshops Set for April Our April meeting will feature Beth Sidley, a certified Studio 180 instructor, presenting Tools for the Realist, not the Idealist. Not only will Beth be presenting a trunk show during our meeting and discussing the time-saving techniques of Deb Tucker, originator of Studio 180, but also Beth will be presenting two workshops on Wednesday, April 12, at the Xenia Community Center. Sign-up will continue at the March meeting, and supply lists will be available. The fee for each workshop is $20 for members, $25 for non-members (if available). The workshops are: Shaded Four Patch - 9 a.m. to Noon Rapid Fire Hunters' Star - 1 to 4 p.m. Xenia Community Center 1265 West Second Xenia, Ohio Special thanks are in order to the presenters for the February program of demonstrations: Nancy Allen, Heart to Heart Centerpiece; Kim Gros, Really Cool Binding Techniques; De McMurry, One-seam Folded Flying Geese; Mary Bergseth, Almost Perfect On-point Blocks; Unconventional Hexagon Technique; and Barb Carruth, Pillow Cases Made Easy. Mary Lou McCormick, Vice President cinemabuff@sbcglobal.net A Note from the President Continuing with MVQG's mission "to promote the art of quilting through education and communication," our February meeting was a treasure chest of new quilting skills. Not only did we have six stations of demonstrations and a guest speaker but also quilt shop updates. Fabric Shack has added another building located in the same parking lot as the current building. "Through the Ages Fabric" is a new sewing store featuring natural fabrics and year, notions, spinning and weaving equipment, cosplay material, and BabyLoc machines. It is located in Cross Point Center. Sew-a-Lot

2 will be closed March 20 to 24 for remodeling. Michael s and JoAnn s offer 10% discount with military ID. And Mason Jar is not closing! The owner plans to stay open until the business is sold. And the business will continue with new owners. Crafters Lodge plans to have moved down the street to 4417 West Franklin Street by March 1. Little Shop of Stitches has finished expanding by another 1400 square feet. They have started selling Bernina machines. Our Quilts of Valor meets there about once a month. We have just finished our annual retreat at our new location. Great job with logistics and lots of finished quilts which we hope to see at the next meeting. Our next meeting is March 14! We will be celebrating Pi Day ( ). Pi (π), the mathematical symbol for the circumference of a circle, is ! Thank you to all the volunteers who signed up to bring pie. We will supply the tableware and drinks including regular and decaf coffee, tea, lemonade, and water. Committee chairs need to send in end-of-year reports. We are always looking for new ideas and projects. We are also looking for coordinators for possibly the following: UFO project, block of the month, mystery quilt, demonstrations, bus trips, challenge quilts (one is coming in September or October), workshops, and secret sister exchange or like. It would be nice to start a column for quilting tips. Please send in your ideas! Remember our meeting and workshops are fragrance free. Don't forget to send in your quilting jokes! Happy quilting away! Mary Bergseth, President maryoo@ameritech.net Quilts of Valor Dates Set for Spring We have been averaging people at our Sew-Ins at The Little Shop of Stitches in Miamisburg every month! So much fun and so productive! The Spring dates have been set: Thursday - March 30, Saturday - April 29, and Wednesday - May 17 (10 a.m. - 4 p.m.). It is important to sign up if you plan to be there, so we can make sure that there is enough room and projects for everyone. Sign-up sheets will be available at the guild meetings. A very big THANK YOU goes out to all of you who made nine patches for QOV at the retreat at the Wingate! We had over 70 sets of nine patches made and we have at least 3 quilts started with these blocks! A very special THANK YOU to Kathy Evens, who organized the instructions and made the visuals, and to Harolyn Burns, who cut out all of the squares! Several people have asked about this technique, where you make a positive and negative nine patch at the same time. There is an Eleanor Burns video called "Nine Patch Party Quilt" on YouTube that shows you how to do it. You can make any size nine patches with this technique, as long as your two beginning squares are 1-1/2 inches bigger than your FINISHED size (ex., cut 7-1/2" squares for 6" finished blocks). We hope that you can use this technique with other quilts! Since we started our Quilts of Valor Project 5 years ago, we have awarded over 160 QOVs to area veterans and active military. ALL of the fabric for these quilts was given by YOU and various

3 donations to the guild. We are very frugal and use everything (see recent string quilt on Facebook). Because we are making so many tops at our Sew-Ins (and many of you are making tops at home), we are in need of backing fabric. It helps our machine quilters to not have backs made with 6 pieces of fabric (they look great, but are hard to line up straight on the machine). There are many of you who would prefer to contribute to our QOV project with your pocketbook, rather than your time, for various reasons (which are all understandable). You also know where the sales and clearance fabric are to make the most of your bucks. If you feel inclined in this manner, the ultimate cut that we need is 2-1/2 yards, but anything bigger than 1 yard is very usable. Fabrics should be in the red, white, blue, gold or cream colors, but do not have to be patriotic. We try to stay away from more feminine fabrics, as most of our recipients are men. Several of you have been cleaning out your stash and we appreciate those donations also! I am so grateful to all of you for your involvement with these quilts and the recipients and their families. We all have been touched by the making and awarding of Quilts of Valor. Thank you. Debbie Ginsburg Quilts of Valor Coordinator debgins@aol.com MVQG K. I. S. S. Retreat Ship Thanks to everyone who helped to make our maiden voyage of the MVQG K. I. S. S. Retreat Ship a great success! Amanda Bame is ready for next year's retreat as our Chairperson. Thanks also come on behalf of the staff at the Wingate. They were impressed by our kindness and are also very happy that we will be returning. The manager expressed his thanks and passed on the comment. "What a wonderful group of women." We also want to thank you for the excellent comments and suggestions. There are some great suggestions for next year and everything you wrote down and said during the retreat has been taken to heart. If you want to help Amanda in some way next year please talk to her before the guild meeting. Shari Brindley/Mary Lou McCormick Planning Underway for 2018 Quilt Show Planning for the 2018 Quilt Show are underway. We, Sherry Gorby and Shari Brindley, are getting our committee in order. We have some people (THANK YOU) returning to their previous positions and we have some openings. We would love to have you join us on Sunday, March 12, at 3:00 p.m. at 721 N. King St., Xenia, to share your ideas and let us know what you would like to do to help. As of right now we'd like to have several people on different teams to lighten the load. It's a very big job with very big shoes to fill. Susan Hill's team was wonderful and we are hoping to do just as well. Please contact us via our s that are in the roster if you can attend the meeting. Thank you. Shari Brindley/Sherry Gorby
