I hope that 2018 is full of healthy, happy days with lots of love and laughter thrown in for good measure and of course, lots of opportunities for creative time in our sewing spaces. Meetings are held the third Tuesday of each month from September to June Please bring the following to the January Meeting: Completed Outreach Projects Name Tag Loonie for Draw Show & Share Items Well...what do you think about this winter we are in the thick of?? I ve had more than one person say that it s reminiscent of the old fashioned Bruce County winters we used to have. We got out our cross country skis one day last week and broke a trail through our bush. It was hard work but we thought once established it would be easy to use. Mother Nature has proved us wrong! Every day since we have had to break a new trail. It has snowed enough every night that the trail virtually disappears. Oh well, it is good exercise! The extravagance of the white stuff sure thrilled the grandkids over the holidays. Forts were built and our deck transformed into a terrific slide. For those of us that prefer to be indoors, the sewing room becomes a sanctuary and we can have fun in the warmth! Lots to do this year to prepare for our Quilt Show coming up in May. I m really looking forward to an exciting Guild year ahead. The Program Committee has lots of interesting things in store for us. Please read all about it in the newsletter and plan to participate as much as you can. You will get so much more out of Quilt Guild if you get involved. 2 QUILT SHOW NEWS - ONLY 129 DAYS TO QUILT SHOW Toonie Table - Items for the Quilt Show can be given to Cathy Weber. Please consider making something small to donate. The funds raised at this will go to helping an organization in the community. It operates like a penny table (small wall hanging, table runner, pot holders, placemats, pillow, etc.). If you have not signed up to work at the Quilt Show please do so. Remember it is a two day event, so a lot of time to cover. Please consider working more than one shift most shifts are 2 hours. Sign-up sheets will be at the January meeting. Wednesday, January 17th at 10:00 A.M. - anyone on the Quilt Show Committee wishing to check out space for the Show please come to help decide where things can be place. Next Quilt Show Meeting - Monday, February 26-1:00 P.M. at Karen Schnurr Hanging Sleeves - Marg Cale Measure the width of your quilt. Cut a strip of fabric that length and 5 to 10 wide (9-10 wide for bed quilts to be hung at quilt show). To hem, turn under 1/4 on each end. Turn under again and stitch in place. Fold the strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. If you have not bound the quilt yet, centre the sleeve at the top of the quilt on the back side, aligning the raw edges of the sleeve with the raw edges of the quilt. Pin in place. Stitch the binding on as usual, catching the raw edges of the sleeve in the binding. If you have already bound the quilt, sew the lengthwise raw edges of the sleeve, wrong sides together, with a 1/4 seam allowance, making a tube. Press the tube so that the seam allowances will be on the back side of the tube. Centre the sleeve at the top of the quilt on the back side, just below the binding. Hand sew the top of the sleeve to the quilt with a blindstitch, being careful not to let the stitches show on the front of the quilt. Finish both types of sleeves by blindstitching the bottom edge and the back of the ends of the sleeve to the lining. Leave space for the dowel. Program Exciting Year Ahead! Please bring your sewing machine and sewing supplies. February 20, 2018 Community Outreach Committee March 20, 2018 VENDOR/DEMO NITE Our Vendor for the evening will be Hilda Wales from Sanity Hill Creations. Hilda will be bringing all her newest collections and provide a short demo. Other DEMO topics include Two Colour Binding with Marg Cale Surprise Mystery DEMO by an EXPERIENCED GUILD MEMBER Sidekicks Ruler with Sheila O Hagan The meeting will be held at the PENTECOSTAL CHURCH, between Mildmay and Walkerton. APRIL 17, 2018 We are excited to announce Kathy Wylie, international award winner quilter. Kathy will speak on THE ART OF APPLIQUE. The meeting will be held at the CHEPSTOW LIONS HALL, CHEPSTOW.

Program committee ladies will have demo stations set up to give directions for making this huge totebag which will come in handy to carry large mats and rulers that are needed when going on retreats

The meeting will be held at the CHEPSTOW LIONS HALL, CHEPSTOW Courses March 20, 2018 Retreat Bag. This will be an all-day course from 9:00 4:00. Program committee ladies will have demo stations set up to give directions for making this huge totebag which will come in handy to carry large mats and rulers that are needed when going on retreats or courses. April 18, 2018 Kathy Wylie will be teaching her APLIQUICK method for turned-edge appliqué. Course is $40 at the CHEPSTOW Hall 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For those members who have registered, PLEASE bring your registration money to the JANUARY meeting. We have a few spots left to fill. October 17, 2018 Jenn Houlden will be teaching Mini Sunflower Bargello November 21, 2018 Tentative booking for Susan Forbes Quick Curve Piecing THE PROGRAM COMMITTEE is looking for EXPERIENCED MEMBERS to assist in mentoring new members and beginner quilters in our Guild. We would like to set up some basic classes for sharing skills and teaching new members/beginner quilters proper quilting techniques. If you are interested in helping out the Program Committee, please contact one of the committee members Karen, Joan, Marg, Louise or Sheila. We are hoping to start classes in February and March, depending on interest and availability of space. Our main focus will be accuracy in cutting, stitching and piecing skills. Please contact Glenna as soon as possible. CHALLENGES We hope your project is well on the way - don't forget to be creative, and please remember to make a pincushion as well for the boutique. If your project has grown in size so that you need more challenge material, please speak to me at the meeting. We will have crushed walnut shells at the upcoming meeting to pick up to stuff your pincushion if you did not get one last month. The bags contain about a cup of shells which will fill a small pincushion. These shells sharpen your pins and needles. You will find the shells for sale at some quilt shops. Some ladies have expressed concern with respect to nut allergies. We have discussed this with Rosemary who is in charge of the boutique. We will have a sign prominently displayed on the pincushion baskets addressing possible nut allergy concerns. WEBSITE An interesting website on "Binding odd angles for quilt projects". THANKS TONIE COMMUNITY OUTREACH REPORT Requests for comfort quilts are to be made to Pat Golem at or at golemp@live.ca. This past month 1 ladies comfort quilt was handed out. There will be cancer hat kits and sinful tops needing borders and 1 comfort top (with batting and backing basted together) ready for hand quilting available to take home at the meeting. Outreach is counting on work being taken home so afternoon work sessions can be dedicated to making boutique items. Never hesitate to ask outreach for kits or help. Moved by Joan Fischer, seconded by Julia Post. Treasurers Report as circulated in newsletter. No questions. Thank you cards were read. Judy Sloan has tickets and bookmarks for the Quilt Show. OUTREACH...showed several quilts that need to be bound and several that are finished. PROGRAM...survey sent out re doing different techniques for more accurate sewing. Good display of favorite Christmas items from guild members. Vintage quilt approx. 100 yrs old Everyone who brought an item received a piece of Christmas fabric. CHALLANGES... walnut shells ready to stuff a pin cushion fabric for a challenge for the Quilt Show is ready. LOTS OF VISITING... NOISY GROUP.!!!!!! SHOW AND SHARE people displayed their projects.
