1 New Millennium Quilters Guild Newsletter February 2018 Mailing Address: P.O. Box 20153, Hanover, ON N4N 3T1 Address: Website Address: Guild Meeting Dates **February 20, 2018 **March 20, 2018 April 17, 2018 May 15, 2018 June 19, 2018 **February & March Meetings will be held at the PENTECOSTAL CHURCH, between Mildmay and Walkerton 7:00 P.M. 9:00 P.M. Meetings are held the third Tuesday of each month from September to June Please bring the following to the February Meeting: Completed Outreach Projects Name Tag Loonie for Draw Show & Share Items President's Message: A few weeks ago on Facebook PP (Past President) Karen challenged us to make some changes to our sewing tools. I thought this was a great idea and wondered why I hadn t thought to start the New Year off this way. My Dad was a machinist and always maintained that proper, well maintained tools made every job easier. So I changed my rotary blade and WOW!...what a difference. It made me wonder why I hadn t done it much sooner. Thank you Karen!! Now for the seam ripper, scissors and needles... Speaking of change, our meetings this month (February 20), in March and in April will NOT be at Knox Church where we usually meet. This month and in March, we will be meeting at the Pentecostal church just south of Walkerton on the road to Mildmay at the usual time. It will be a change for us to be meeting in a different place and I look forward to this new experience! You will be receiving an and/ or phone call about the location change. April s meeting will be in Chepstow with Kathy Wylie. On February 20th the program will be provided by the Outreach Committee and I m sure it will be interesting. I hope you have had some extra time in your sewing rooms on these wintery days. Our Quilt Show is only 3 months away and there s lots to get done before the big day(s). It s nice to have an excuse to sew! Happy Valentine Day to all of you! Hope to see you at the Pentecostal Church on February 20th. 2 QUILT SHOW NEWS - ONLY 129 DAYS TO QUILT SHOW Toonie Table - Items for the Quilt Show can be given to Cathy Weber. Please consider making something small to donate. The funds raised at this will go to helping an organization in the community. It operates like a penny table (small wall hanging, table runner, pot holders, placemats, pillow, etc.). If you have not signed up to work at the Quilt Show please do so. Remember it is a two day event, so a lot of time to cover. Please consider working more than one shift most shifts are 2 hours. Sign-up sheets will be at the January meeting. Decorating Committee - As part of decorating for the Quilt Show I need a couple of volunteers who could help me Thursday for setting up decorations. You could be there for a couple of hours or for 6 hours.if members could me - kousino2000@yahoo.ca with items that could be used, I would greatly appreciate it. Here are some suggestions: child wooden high chair, small rocking chairs, wicker baskets, urns, wash boards, coloured flower pots, small cradle, child stool, child chairs, glass vases for fresh flowers...if you have items and you are not sure send me off an . All items have to be marked with tags or masking tape with your name. Also we are having an antique sewing machine displays (lots of room in the arena to fill). Machines don t have to be in working order. With all your help we had a great display last Quilt Show. Suggestions are welcome if you have any ideas. With all the members hard work we can make this a success...thank you. 3 2018 Courses There will be two courses on March 20, 2018: March 20, 2018 Retreat Bag. This will be a half day course from 1:00 4:30 at Pentecostal Church between Walkerton & Mildmay. Still have room for one more sign up at February meeting. Cost $20 + $5.65 for pattern. Sheila, Joan & Louise from Program Committee, will have demo stations set up to give directions for making this huge tote bag which will come in handy to carry large mats and rulers that are needed when going on retreats or courses. March 20, Log Cabin Block Beginner/Refresher Workshop. This will also be a half day course from 1:00 4:30 at Pentecostal Church between Walkerton & Mildmay. Sign up at February meeting. Cost $20. Marg & Karen from Program Committee will be leading this workshop on the basics of making the log cabin block. i.e. cutting strips, 1/4 seams, pressing, block arrangements, etc. BEGINNER LOG CABIN - SUPPLY LIST - MARCH 20, 2018 Finished blocks measure 12 x 12 (unfinished blocks measure 12.5 x 12.5 ). The block uses the typical Log Cabin arrangement of light and dark fabrics. For four (4) finished log cabin blocks you will require: Centre Square: one (1) fat eighth (or equivalent yardage) Light Side: two (2) fat quarters if using one fabric for the light side of the Log Cabin block, three (3) coordinating light fat quarters (or equivalent yardage), typically ranging in value from Very Light to Medium Light to Light (or equivalent yardage) Dark Side: three coordinating dark fat quarters (or equivalent yardage), typically ranging in value from Medium to Medium Dark to Dark Additional fabrics may be required if you wish to complete more blocks including more block fabric plus fabric for sashing, borders, binding, and backing and batting. What you will learn: how to use your rotary cutter how to sew an accurate.25 seam chain piecing how to square up blocks WHAT TO BRING TO A WORKSHOP This is a list of what works for me. All of us develop individual preferences, but I appreciated this type of list whenever I took a quilting class. Sewing Machine: 1. Cleaning: Take time to brush out lint from around the feed dogs and bobbin case. Do some of your regular maintenance to make sure your machine is not going to slow you down the day of the workshop. 2. Needles: Treat yourself to new needle. A #70 universal is my favourite and I change needles constantly. (about every 6-8 hours of sewing.) 3. Thread: Choose a neutral colour such as grey or beige and you will find it blends in with almost everything. Liz Cooper got me started using light grey brilliant poly/cotton and I love it as it is very fine, works well with a #70 needle and seems to cause less bulk at intersecting seams. Liz always has this on hand and says she sells a great deal of it to quilters. 4. Bobbins: Prewind several bobbins. I hate to be slowed down when time is precious at a workshop, so I keep a small pill bottle full of about 6 bobbins wound in the colour I will need. I do this at any time I am working on a project. New Millennium Quilters Guild Newsletter February 2018 Page 3

4 Cutting Equipment: 1. Scissors: I like to have a small pair of sharp-nosed scissors for snipping threads at the machine, a pair of good dressmaking shears for cutting fabric, and a pair of cheap but sharp scissors for cutting paper or who knows what, so I don t have to use my good fabric shears. 2. Rotary Cutter: Make sure your rotary cutter blade doesn t have any nicks to slow you down. I try to have a new blade ready when needed. It is not a good idea to borrow or share someone else s rotary cutter. 3. Cutting Mat: Depending on the project, different sizes can be suitable. My favourite size is 18 x 24, small enough to be portable and large enough to comfortably cut across the width of fabric. (Simone Lynch has a great pattern for a tote bag that holds this size mat, a 6 x 24 ruler, with a pocket for a rotary cutter.) I also bring a small mat, 4 x 6 to keep close to the machine for trimming. The 24 x 36 mat is wonderful to use, but a pain to lug around to workshops. It is quite acceptable to share someone else s cutting mat. Just be sensitive to others need for using the mat. 4. Rulers: In most cases, a 6 x 24 ruler would get you through a workshop. I also like to use a 12 1/12 square and a 4 x 12 ruler. If you need to cut squares larger than 6, the 12 /2 square is helpful, but it s ok to borrow one from someone else. If you re working with lots of tiny pieces, you really should have a smaller ruler like a 6 1/2 square or 4 x 8. Fabric: Fat Quarters: A fat quarter is a half meter cut in half to form a piece about 18 x 22, which is a more useful size and shape than a quarter meter strip. Quilt shops often sell colour coordinated groupings of fat quarters. 100% cotton is the preferred fabric for today s quilters. Don t mix and match fabric contents and remember that broadcloth is usually a poly/cotton blend. If looking for a solid colour, make sure you get 100% cotton. To prewash or not to prewash that is the question. There are two schools of thought on this. One is that 100% cotton will always have some shrinkage, so preshrink and iron your fabric before cutting it to prevent any major changes in your project after its first washing. However, take into account the following points: The quilting puffs up more noticeably after washing if the fabric shrinks a bit. This may be an effect you re trying to achieve. Most good quality 100% cottons have a very minimal shrinkage. The fabric is easier to manage if it still has its original finish and sizing, although this can easily be duplicated by lightly starching your fabric when you wash it. Bold, dark colours may run, so it is essential to prewash and check to see that there is no loss of colour in the last rinse. Either have all your fabrics prewashed or all your fabrics unwashed. You might get some strange effects if you mix and match when you first wash the project. Useful Extras: Pins, - fine brass pins and flower head pins are my standbys. Stitch ripper! Marking pencil Measuring tape Iron and small ironing board. These are items that are easily shared, so don t worry if you don t have one to bring, or check to see if you can arrange to share with someone else. Power bar and/or extension cord Mug for coffee/tea Water or other beverage Janet Robertson, Kincardine Sunset Quilt Guild COMMUNITY OUTREACH REPORT Requests for comfort quilts are to be made to Pat Golem at or at golemp@live.ca. This past month 2 comfort quilts have been handed out. A special request was made by Brucelea Haven for a Dignity Quilt which outreach fulfilled.
