Choose A Chisel Class Description Choose one of four chisel patterns, gather your fabrics, come to class, and cut an entire quilt in minutes using an Accuquilt GO! Cutter provided in classroom. If you ve never used a GO!, this is a great way to see what it s about or if you have one, bring it and try this simple but versatile shape. The class includes instructions for four quilts. Chisels and background pieces for 20 blocks will be cut in class. Finished quilt sizes vary. Chisel Circles is a simple but graphic pattern. The block finishes at 12 and it can be done in one fabric or scrappy as shown. The background fabric repeats in the border to give the illusion of floating blocks. The optional scrappy dark border is also constructed from chisels. Due to time constraints, these cannot be cut in class, but instruction will be given for easily cutting additional chisels at home without the GO!. The Five Star Chisel is the same pattern with a few of the chisels cut from one fabric to make stars. This quilt has a simple single-fabric border. The Chisel Flower quilt is made up of smaller blocks finishing at 8. They are cut on the GO!, trimmed and the trimmings are used to make the piano key border. Applique a circle to the center and you have a fun flower quilt. The Big Block Chisel Star is a great block for a quick and easy large quilt, and gives great space for hand or machine applique or machine embroidery as shown in the sample. Cut the same number of pieces in class as for the other quilts, add four corner blocks and a four patch center and the result is a quick and easy 18 finished block. If you don t want a large quilt, the blocks can be used to make a number of wall hangings, large throws, etc. The class also includes tips for working with the chisel shape, cutting chisels without the GO!, and demonstrates other possibilities of the block such as French Braid. Go to Nancybills.com, Gallery, MAQ 2013 for additional photos and information on each quilt featured.

Choose a Chisel Size varies according to pattern Sewing machine in good working order Rotary cutter, ruler & cutting mat Optional if you want to cut additional chisels at home: Easy Angle 6 ½. If you ve taken a class from me before, chances are that you have this ruler. If not, it is inexpensive and very useful to have. It can be purchased at many quilt shops or at JoAnn s. Scissors, thread, seam ripper and other basic sewing supplies For the Big Block Chisel Star: 3 ½ square ruler or other ruler to cut 3 ½ squares 6 ½ square ruler or other ruler to cut 6 ½ squares If you have a GO! cutter: Chisel die# ½ half-square triangle die# GO! Cutting Mats Optional for Big Block Chisel Star: 6 1/2 Square die # (To cut star corner squares) 3 1/2 Square die# (To cut star center squares) Fabric: Since the direction of the cut chisels matters, batiks, homespuns, or hand dyed fabric work really wellsince they have no right or wrong side but any cotton fabric (not flannel) will work. With regular cottons, you will have to be aware of how the fabric is feeding through the cutter. It s not a huge problem - just something that you ll need to be aware of when cutting. The fabric requirements will vary slightly for the three quilts. They are also listed on my web site along with additional photos. Go to Nancybills.com in the Gallery, MAQ 2013, Choose a Chisel Chisel Circles: 48 x 60 before borders. 66 x 78 with 3 floating and 6 double chisel border. 3 ¼ yd. dark for chisels. If you re using scraps you will need 80 pieces at least 11 x 4 ½. The 11 measurement should be along the lengthwise grain of the fabric. (These do not need to be precisely cut. This is just the size that goes through the cutter.) Each piece yields two chisels. See the pre-class homework page for further explanation. Note: This doesn t include fabric for the double chisel border. 2 ¼ yd. light for background and floating light border. This assumes that you cut your 4 3 1/2 border strips first, from the length of the fabric so that the borders do not have to be pieced. The remaining fabric will then be used for the quilt background. For the double chisel border you will need scraps totaling approximately 2 ½ yd. This border won t be cut in class, but you ll receive instruction on how to do it easily at

home. If you would prefer to cut the border using a GO! cutter, there will be an Accuquilt Go! Cutter Center where you can rent time on a cutter to cut both this and other quilts. Fabric for backing & binding. Five Star Chisel: 48 x 60 before borders. 60 x 72 with 6 border. 3 yd. dark for chisels. If you re using scraps you will need 70 pieces at least 11 x 4 ½. The 11 measurement should be along the lengthwise grain of the fabric. (These do not need to be precisely cut. This is just the size that goes through the cutter.) Each piece yields two chisels. See the pre-class homework page for further explanation. 1½ yd. light for background 2 ¼ yd. border fabric for 6 border with no piecing. Fabric for backing & binding. Chisel Flowers: 50 x 68 including pieced piano key border 3 ¼ yd. for chisel flowers & circle centers. If you re using scraps, you will need 80 pieces at least 11 x 4 1/2. The 11 measurement should be along the lengthwise grain of the fabric. (These do not need to be precisely cut. This is just the size that goes through the cutter.) Each piece yields two chisels. See the preclass homework page for further explanation. Note: I made each flower using one single fabric. To do this you will need 4-11 x 4 1/2 rectangles of one fabric. (Each rectangle yields 2 chisels and each flower requires 8 chisels.) The quilt can be made with 20 different fabrics or flower fabrics can be repeated. Each flower would still look like a flower if it was scrappy but made from fabrics in the same color family. 1 ½ yd. light for background 2 yd. for sashing and borders. Note: This should be the same fabric as the background but the two yardages allow for cutting the sashing and borders from the 2 yd. piece and the background pieces from the 1 ½ yd. piece. This gives you slightly extra for both and allows for any possible mistakes as well as slightly wider borders (not pieced) and/or sashing if that s your choice. Pre-cutting at home for the background pieces should be done using the 1 ½ yd. piece. The pieced body of this quilt is smaller since the chisels are smaller, but leftover pieces from cutting are used to make the piano key border so no additional fabric is needed for this. ½ yd. Heat N Bond Lite for circle centers. Instead of applique circle centers, buttons, yo yos, or other finishes for flower centers could be used. Fabric for backing & binding.

Big Block Chisel Star: 72 x 90 before border The sample shown has four star points in one single fabric and the remaining four star points scrappy. This gives a subtle secondary pattern to the star. To do this you will need: Scraps totaling approximately 1 2/3 yd. for star points. You will need 40, 11 x 4 ½ pieces of star fabric. (These do not need to be precisely cut. This is just the size that goes through the cutter.) Each piece yields two chisels. The 11 should be cut along the lengthwise grain of the fabric. See the pre-class homework for further explanation. 1 2/3 yd. of a single star point fabric. 1 ½ yd. light background I Corner star pieces can be one single fabric (2 3/4 yd.) cut into 80 6 ½ squares, or if you re doing scrappy corner squares, you will need 80 6 ½ squares ½ scrappy squares for the star center four patch (approximately 1 yd.). Note: I have broken this down because you will be cutting the background pieces on the GO!, but you ll be cutting the star corner squares and center squares by hand. The border size for this quilt is up to you. I used a 6 finished border all around the quilt to make it fit my bed. If you are making one to fit your own bed or making a number of wall hangings your border requirements will be different. (You might also choose to make 5 four block hangings measuring 36 x 36 before borders or other combinations of blocks to make a number of wall hangings, table runners, or throws.) The space between the blocks is very large (12 where four blocks come together). I did redwork machine embroidery in this space and along the border, but hand or machine applique or fancy quilting would also work well. Fabric for backing and binding. Be sure to read the pre-class homework instructions. Pre-cutting must be done before class in order to have time to cut on the GO! and still get some sewing done. If you have any questions about the quilts or the supply list, please contact me through my web site: nancybills.com. If you leave a phone number, I will gladly call you to answer any questions or concerns. Please remember that yardages are approximate. I try to allow extra yardage to compensate for mistakes, but buying slightly more is never a bad thing. Since all of these quilts look really good done scrappy, it s very easy to add additional fabric at any time. If you want to make any of these quilts larger, don t forget about the Accuquilt GO! Cutter Center where you can rent time on a cutter for these or a number of other quilts.

Choose a Chisel Pre-class Homework You will need to have the fabric that s being cut on the GO! cutter prepared before class, otherwise we won t have time to get everything cut and some sewing done as well. The sizes given for the cuts are approximate. The pieces shouldn t be smaller than what s quoted but could be slightly larger. If you re using scraps this means that you don t have to do tons of trimming. Just be sure that the grain line is correct. The instructions say to cut one of the measurements along the lengthwise grain of the fabric. This is the direction of the selvage. Fabric stretches less along the lengthwise grain and thus goes through the cutter more accurately. If you have pieces without a selvage edge, there is a snap test that quickly determines the direction. Go to Accuquilt.com. On the top toolbar click on AccuQuilt U and then from the drop down click on Fabric cutting tips. This is the best explanation. Be sure to read about the snap test. I use this all the time for my scraps. If you re using homespuns like I did in a couple of my quilts, it s more difficult to determine the grain line. Just do the best you can. This is one shape where it matters which side is facing up when going through the cutter. Any 100% cotton works well but homespuns, batiks and hand dyed fabrics are great choices since there is no right or wrong side. This is not to persuade you one way or the other - just FYI. Chisel Circles From the 3 ¼ yd. of dark cut your fabric 11 x WOF (Width of Fabric) along the lengthwise grain. Then cut these strips into 4 1/2 pieces. You will need 80 but cut 84 in case you have a problem. If using scraps, cut 80-84, 11 x 4 1/2 rectangles, remembering to check the grainline. From the 2 ¼ yd. of background fabric, cut 4-3 1/2 x 81 strips for the first floating border. Set these aside. This insures that you won t have to piece your border. From the remainder of the fabric cut 9 1/2 x the remaining WOF along the lengthwise grain. Cut these strips into 4 1/2 pieces. You will need 40 of these but cut a couple of extra just in case. Five Star Chisel From the 3 yd. of dark cut your fabric 11 x WOF along the lengthwise grain. Then cut these strips into 4 1/2 pieces. You will need 70, but cut a couple of extra just in case. If using scraps, cut 70-74, 11 x 4 1/2 rectangles remembering to check the grainline. From the single star fabric cut 11 x WOF strips along the lengthwise grain. Then also cut these into 4 1/2 pieces. You will need 10. If using scraps, cut 10 pieces 11 x 4 1/2.

From the background fabric cut 9 1/2 strips along the lengthwise grain. Cut these strips into 4 1/2 pieces. You will need 40 of these. Chisel Flowers From the chisel flower fabric cut 11 x WOF strips along the lengthwise grain. Cut these strips into 4 1/2 pieces. I made each flower different but kept the chisels in each flower the same. To do this you will need 4-11 x 4 1/2 rectangles of each flower fabric. There are 20 flowers in the quilt but you can definitely repeat fabrics if you want. The flowers can also be scrappy - it s your choice. Whatever you do, you need 80, 11 x 4 1/2 rectangles, but cut a couple extra just in case. Save your scraps and bring them to class. You can cut the center circles from these scraps. From the background fabric cut 9 1/2 strips along the lengthwise grain. Cut these strips into 4 1/2 pieces. You will need 40 of these. Big Block Chisel Star From the single star fabric, cut 11 x WOF strips along the lengthwise grain. Cut these strips into 4 1/2 pieces. You will need 40 of these, cut a couple of extra just in case. For the scrappy star points, cut 11 x 4 1/2 strips along the lengthwise grain. If you re using one single fabric, cut as above. You will need 40 of these rectangles, but cut a couple of extra. From the background fabric cut 9 1/2 strips along the lengthwise grain. Cut these strips into 4 1/2 pieces. You will need 40 of these. Press and starch the star corner fabrics and the star center fabrics before cutting them into squares. Pressing afterwards can cause the squares to stretch and distort. From the star corner fabric or fabrics, cut 80, 6 1/2 squares. From the star center fabrics, cut 80, 3 1/2 squares.
