How did it get to be September already. I hope you all have had a wonderful summer filled with family, friends and adventures. And maybe some fun times with your sewing machines as well. I am just finishing up my Canada Mystery Quilt, a BOM from Shania Sunga Designs for display at the Chesley Fall Fair next weekend. They have asked for Canada theme quilts for a Canada 150 display. The binding is almost on, so I think I'll make it...phew! I have been so fortunate to have had lots of travel this summer. We spent 3 weeks at our family cottage near Timmins ( wood stove got lots of use but great family visits), 2 weeks with our kids and grandkids in PEI and Nova Scotia (almost bumped into Karen Ruetz) and visited Laurie Swims Fibre Art Studio in Lunenburg and then a few days in Toronto (did bump into Nina McTeer) at a musical and saw an amazing quilt). More about the quilt...it was the Quilt of Belonging with 263 blocks representing 71 Aboriginal groups and 192 immigrant nationalities found in Canada on display at the CNE. It is a breathtaking, emotional tapestry measuring 36 metres long by 3.5 metres high. Céleste Compion from Meerkat Trading who did our program last March has done the block representing the African country of Namibia. Here is the website: if you would like to see it. I am looking forward to the start of our "new year". It promises to be an exciting and busy one as we prepare for our Quilt Show in May. This month's meeting on September 19th will be busy as well. Annual membership fees are due, the proposed budget needs to be reviewed, and lots of catching up with friends will happen. The highlight of the meeting will be Marg Cale's Trunk Show. Marg will be focusing on challenges she has done in the past and I'm so looking forward to seeing her presentation. See you on the 19th! 4 Program Exciting Year Ahead! September 19, 2017 Marg Cale ( member of the Sunset Quilters Guild in Kincardine and our NMQG) is going to inspire everyone with a trunk show entitled "If You Give A Quilter A Challenge"...If you give a Quilter a challenge, she s going to go to her stash looking for the perfect fabric. While she s looking in her stash, she s going to find a UFO that just needs to have the binding finished. October 17, 2017 We welcome Kalidoscope of Quilts located at 355 Main Street in Exeter Ontario. They are a quilting store with a twist, selling everything from fabric, notions, books, patterns, 100% wool along with coordinating Valdani Threads. Come early to shop. November 21, 2017 Joni Newman a quilter/designer based in Stittsville, Ontario and is the owner of Quirks & Quilts. Joni will have her unique Stain Glass patterns created using raw edge fusible appliqué for sale before and after the meeting. December 19, 2017 Christmas Pot Luck. Each member is asked to bring their favourite Christmas quilted item for a show and share display. Please label with your name. January 16, 2018 Gizmos and Gadgets Demos. February 20, 2018 Community Outreach Committee. March 20, 2018 We welcome Hilda Wales from Sanity Hill as an evening vendor. Several demo s will inspire you on how to finish your quilts for the upcoming show. April 17, 2018 We are EXCITED to announce Kathy K. Wylie is coming with her amazing trunk show. Kathy K. Wylie is a multiple international-award winning quilter specializing in appliqué techniques in a "contemporary traditional" style. She lectures and teaches all over the country at guilds, shops and quilt shows and is a CQA/ACC Certified Quilt Judge. Her work has been featured in magazines, and her designs are available as individual patterns as well as in her book "Sewflakes: Papercut Appliqué Quilts." This meeting will be held in Chepstow, Ontario. May 15, 2018 Ten days to the Making Memories Quilt Show. This evening is dedicated to organizing the final details for the show and presented by the show committee. President Marion Quilt Show Challenge and Evelyn/Catherine s Christmas Challenges will be revealed and viewer's choice voting will take place. June 19, 2018 Year-end Potluck featuring the award winning projects from the quilt show Courses September Mitten Course Cancelled October 17, 2017 Tuesday afternoon 1:30 4:30. Come out for an afternoon of fun wool appliquéing a 12 x 14 Christmas theme picture. It will be all handwork, so no need to lug a sewing machine around. Cost for workshop is $20 plus the Kit which is $30 + taxes to be paid on the day of course. Sign up and pay at September meeting so we can get numbers to Tammy for ordering patterns. 5 November 22nd Joni Newman s Stained Glass Quilting. Create an original masterpiece in stained glass quilting. Appliqué and quilting are all done in one step! Choose from a variety of projects from beginner to more advanced and learn this fun technique. $35.00 for the class on Wednesday November 22, a.m. to 4 p.m. (Plus pattern and supplies) Some preparation work need to be completed before the course. March 20, 2018 Mystery Retreat Bag. Tuesday afternoon course from 1:30 4:30. Course fee: $20 April 18, 2018 Kathy Wylie will be teaching her Apliquick method for turned-edge appliqué. Free use of her tools which may be purchased after the course. Full Day Wednesday Course: $40 at the Chepstow Hall 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Remember your lunch. COMMUNITY OUTREACH REPORT Requests for comfort quilts are to be made to Pat Golem at or at golemp@live.ca. Over the summer six comfort quilts have been handed out. Our comfort quilts continue to be in demand, especially if they have a flannel backing. So, in lieu of afternoons of sewing while we are preparing for the boutique we will have simply sinful kits ready to take home to be sewn together. All help is appreciated. Outreach will not be having work session in the afternoon prior to the September meeting. The I Spy kits with the yellow background supplied need to be returned at the September meeting as well as the sinful kits that were handed out in May. Marilyn will be discussing some tips to use when making the simply sinful quilt pattern. Outreach will be having kits available to make chemo hats and chemo bags to donate to the Owen Sound Hospital. The cancer hat pattern is attached to the back of the newsletter. If you prefer making pillowcases or mission dresses to be distributed, let someone on outreach know so fabric to make these items can be brought to the meeting. This fall, beginning in October, Outreach will be raffling three different kits for making a bow tie comfort quilt. Tickets are $2 each or 4 for $5 so a ticket gives a member three chances to win. Each kit contains extra matching and co-ordinating fabrics. They are as follows: A) 18 eight and a half inch blocks of scrappy bow ties B) 34 nine and a half inch blocks of scrappy bow ties C) 31 nine and a half inch blocks of solid bow ties. COMING EVENTS October 7, Friends are holding a Quilt Show - Teeswater United Church, 10 AM - 4 PM - quilts, knitting & crocheted items, embroidery work, jewellery and much more - refreshments & lunch available. Admission $2.00. All proceeds from lunch counter & admissions to Make A Wish. 6 QUILT SHOW UPDATE QUILT SHOW MEETING Just a little over 8 months away! Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, October 3. BOUTIQUE COMMITTEE The Boutique Committee for the 2018 Quilt Show would like to ask members, if they have any of the follow items that they would like to donate to the committee to make items for sale in the boutique with the theme being RECYCLE, RESUE gently used blue jeans zippers antique buttons men`s ties (preferably wide ties) men`s button front shirts - patterns - not plain. We will be having monthly workshops on the day of the meetings. Rosemary Heisz MINUTES -JUNE 20, CHEPSTOW COMMUNITY CENTER A social evening at the Chepstow Park was organized by the Social Committee. Ken Fischer husband of Joan and Mike O Hagan husband of Sheila were our chefs. BBQed hamburgers for all. Delicious!!! Again enough salads, casseroles and desserts to feed an army! -----there was very little left!!! RAINED AND RAINED ---- good that we were under cover! Minutes of last meeting Moved by Nina and seconded by Glenna. CARRIED 1 thank you card read. Treasurer- All bills must be in by August 20. Renewed the GIC for another 6 months, will be due in November. FMQ group - Cathy Weber thanked Tonie Botting for all her help with the group, Rosemary H. Helen G. Evelyn B. She is a wealth of information, very patience and encouraging, gave them lots of tips. Dianne Gullett - Chapman House, Hospice, Owen Sound. She delivered 4 single bed quilts and 4 lap quilts They were very appreciative of the quilts. Program - Marion B. Nina M. Rosemary H. And Ruth H. Slide show of their month long trip to South Africa. Displayed the many treasurers and fabrics they bought while there. Thank you Sheila O'H for all your work putting all the pictures on the power point for us. Social and Program thanked everyone for all the help with set up and take down on our meeting nights. Also, for holding up quilts during show and share and all the assistance with our guess speakers. Signup sheets are ready for the fall courses. FYI Hanover Sewing Club has a bus going to the Creative Sewing Festival October 28 Show and Share - 16 people showed their work SCRAPPY CHALLANGE - Dianne G. and Rosemary H. were our winners. All participants were given a gift of fabric. Door prize - Inga Bolt FYI - Executive meeting, Monday august 28, 1pm. at the church HANOVER SEWING CLUB BUS TRIP TO CREATIVFESTIVAL The Hanover Sewing Club is sponsoring a bus trip to the CreativFestival on Saturday, October 28, There are a limited number of seats available this year 34 in total so reserve your seat early. A $50 payment will secure a seat on the bus and admission to the Festival. Pick up locations are Mother Theresa School in Walkerton (leave at 7:00 a.m.); Food Basics parking lot in Hanover (leave at 7:15 a.m.), and the Credit Union parking lot in Durham (leave at 7:30 a.m.). A stop in Mount Forest will depend on riders from that area. Please arrive 10 minutes before pickup times. We will make a washroom/coffee stop in Orangeville on the way to Toronto.
