1 New Millennium Quilters Guild September 2018 Issue P.O. Box 20153, Hanover, ON N4N 3T1 Guild Meeting Date: September 18, 2018 Meetings are held from 7-9 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month from September to June. Meetings will be held at our new location in the Walkerton Pentecostal Church. Due to security reasons the main doors will be locked after 7:00. Follow the driveway to the left of the building to the lower level for entry to the meeting. Parking is limited to 6-8 vehicles on the lower level and should be left for those who have difficulty walking. Next meeting: Oct. 16 Please bring the following to the September Meeting: Completed Outreach Projects Name Tag Loonie for Draw Show & Share Items Completed membership form and fee ($35) President's Message: Welcome, bienvenue, willkommen, benvenuto to all my quilting friends. We have a full agenda of workshops, community projects and speakers for the coming year. All members new and old are encouraged to participate and by partaking you will form new friendships and renew old ones. This advice from Patti Carey from Northcott silk fabrics: never stop learning. Take classes, read magazines and use the internet. We are in need of a 1st vice and a 2nd vice. Two ladies could work together to fill these two positions. If you are a bit interested, you could attend the four executive meetings held during the year. We will do our best to inform you. This is what makes the NMQG work: generosity of time, talent and hard work and because of this we had a very successful quilt show. Thank you. My objective for the coming year is to finish projects. Mostly machine quilting ones. I will take Rosie s advice and work on them. Hope to see lots of your finished projects at show and share. See you at the meeting and have a good month everyone, Tonie Explanation for Payments at the September Meeting: Doors will be open at 6:15 p.m. for registration and Vendor shopping. Once your registration form (last page of this newsletter) is completed in the upstairs lobby with Greeter Marion Brown, members may proceed downstairs (or by elevator) to the Church basement. Please stop at each table for registration of the bus trip, two courses, retreat and membership fees. Each station will register your intentions and initial the form. When completed, head to the last table and give your total payment by either cash (exact change, preferably) or cheque (payable to NMQG) to Treasurer Glenna Hibberd and her assistant Helen Gutscher. 7 Community Outreach Report Requests for comfort quilts are to be made to Pat Golem at or at Over the summer 4 comfort quilts were given out. Outreach welcomes Karen Walter and Rebecca Becker to the committee. At the September meeting we will have kits for members, complete with all necessary materials for making cancer hats. See pattern at the back of the newsletter. We will also have a pattern in the newsletter to make I Spy blocks for children s comfort quilts. Available for you to pick up are novelty images for the center of the block. Take as many as you feel you can make and place them in a zip lock bag to go home. Samples of sewn blocks are there for you to view. Please return completed blocks ASAP so they can be assembled and completed for the Optimistic fund raising in early March for the sponsored children. We appreciate all zip lock bags being returned so they can be reused. Hilda Wales has generously offered to donate fabric, batting and backing to the guild to make a dignity quilt for the proposed Hospice Center in South Grey Bruce. Outreach has decided to use the Simply Sinful pattern for the dignity quilt. On the afternoon of the November meeting we plan to gather to assemble the top. Bring your sewing machines and accessories. You will also be able to work on some string quilt projects on this day as well. CAN YOU FIND ME? I spy QUILT KIT -from Quiltmaker Magazine May/June/17 Page 44 Step 1: Square your novelty fabric to 4½ inches. Some 5 squares were given out. Step 2: Choose your background (white or cream) and framing fabric contrast is important here for bright framing. Step 3: Cut two 3 squares and four 1½ by 4½ rectangles from background and from framing fabrics. Step 4: Instructions: Make 4 half square triangles -- place rt. sides to rt. side background and your framing fabric squares. On the background square draw a diagonal line from corner to corner. Sew a scant ¼ from each side of the drawn line. Cut down the center line. Press open and square to 2½. Sew blocks together as in diagram. It should be 8½ unfinished but outreach will do the final squaring up. Use accurate quarter inch seams. Make sure seams are pressed as indicated to the dark and not folded over opposite to the way they are pressed. New Millennium Quilters Guild Newsletter September 2018 Page 7
