Not a day goes by that I am not dreaming, plotting, planning, cutting, stitching ((and un-stitching!)) on SOMETHING Quilt-Related! 3 CLASSES AND SUPPLIES #104 JAMESTOWN LANDING Wednesday, March 27, 2019 All Levels Book Required Stars and chains in blues and neutrals are sure to capture any star-lover's fancy! What a great way to clear out scraps by choosing two color families: A foreground (Blue) and a background (Neutral) Students will learn the basics of string piecing along with learning to use the Easy Angle ruler to create half square triangle units from 2 1/2" scrap strips. This quilt was a great way for me to use a large variety of blue and neutral scraps for the half-square triangles, and even more scrap fun clearing out a whole box of neutral strings used in the alternate block areas. I love designing projects that will use up every last bit. This quilt was a great way for me to use a large variety of blue and neutral scraps for the half square triangles, and even more scrap fun clearing out a whole box of neutral strings used in the alternate block areas! Class supplies: Please note: This is a "book required" class. The pattern is found in my book String Fling, and may be purchased through your local shop, or ordered through my website at In addition to the basic requirements of Sewing Machine with 1/4" foot, (ALSO bring a regular open toe foot if your 1/4" foot has a guide on it.) pins, needles, thread, seam ripper, scissors, rotary cutter, mat and ruler please bring the following: Foundation paper: Any paper can be used! I use phone book paper as my foundation as it tears easily and is readily available. Unprinted news print type paper, or doodle pads from the dollar store also work well! Please avoid velum as it curls when touched with an iron. Cut a handful of 4.5" square foundations from paper before coming to class. A 4.5" or 6.5" square ruler is helpful in trimming up string block units. I like to use a size 15 denim needle when doing the string piecing. They make bigger holes in the paper for easy removal. Fabric Requirements for full quilt: 4 yards of blue scraps and strings. Gather a wide variety of prints, stripes, plaids and others ranging in value from light blue to dark navy. 5 yards of light/neutral scraps and strings. Look for a wide variety of prints, stripes and plaids ranging from white to cream to beige to tan. The fabrics may include small figures, leaves and flowers as long as the fabric ground reads as neutral. Easy Angle Ruler: I made all the half square triangle units for my quilt using the Easy Angle Ruler and 2.5" strips. If you have your own favorite way of making half square triangles, cut your fabric accordingly. This fabric is INCLUDED in the yardage requirements above. Just cut SOME 2.5" strips of both the neutral and the blue. It's a 6 hour class, you only need enough fabric cut to keep you busy for 6 hours, etc) You can cut more later! Books may be ordered ahead of time from my website at Quiltville.com. I will also bring a book to class for you if you let me know ahead of time that you need one. me at Quiltville@gmail.com Full quilt yardage is given below for your planning, but keep in mind that you likely won t need to bring your binding and border fabrics to class. Consider the time we have for class, and perhaps just bring a bit more than you think you will accomplish in that period of time! Yardage Requirements: Background: 4-1/4 yards assorted light/neutral batik, tone on tone and print scraps Star Blocks: 2-3/4 yards assorted medium to dark colored batik, tone on tone and print scraps Ladder Blocks: 1-1/2 yards brown tone-on-tone Inner border: 1/2 yard raspberry batik Outer border: 1-1/2 yards green batik Binding: 3/4 yard purple batik Scrap quilts are of course my favorite, and I was ruthless with my fabric when it came to pulling what I needed for this quilt. If it was a 2.5 strip, I used it...if it was less than 1/2 of a fat quarter, I cut it up until it was gone! The more variety in color you throw in, the better it looks. And that s the one great thing about batiks that I love ---EVERY batik always looks great next to every other batik! Feel free to use non-batiks too, this is your quilt. Working with scraps & smaller pieces, it can sometimes be difficult to be really exact on yardage, or on how many strips you d need to cut to get that many pieces...scrap strip lengths may vary from long to short, and you can t always say that 20 strips will give you this many squares, etc. I count by UNITS...meaning, if I need squares, and I m cutting from scraps, I just keep cutting until I have that many. As you are cutting, count your units. It helps to baggie them up in zip lock bags so they are ready to go. How many strips do you need to get those units? It s simple. Cut one strip, see how much you can get from it and do some simple math to figure how many strips YOU need to complete your cutting. Let s talk about VALUE! 6

7 We ve all heard about the light, medium, dark thing when it comes to choosing fabrics, right? I want to throw that out the window for you. I want to simplify it when it comes to this quilt and simply give you TWO categories: Neutral: White, cream, beige to tan These are the background shades. You could also throw in some very light pastels like yellow, baby blue, very very light baby pink, peach or green...but these have almost NO color at all, get me? Just BARELY a hue. I know that neutral batiks are sometimes harder to find, and I threw in other tone on tone or textured print fabrics that would blend with my batiks to give me enough variety. Colors: ALL THE OTHER COLORS IN THE CRAYON BOX! These are your main fabrics be they purple, green, blue, orange, brown, red --- the whole box of markers...chances are if your fabric is NOT neutral, it is one of these. As you prepare your fabrics for this quilt just think of these two categories and you ll do just GREAT! Constant or Focal Fabric: This is the one PLANNED fabric I used other than the borders that gave me some consistency in the quilt among all the other various fabrics. I used a brown tone on tone wood block print in strategic placement for the ladder blocks throughout the quilt for unity. One thing that is fun also... because our fabrics are cut ahead of time, we can exchange neutral rectangles and squares with each other to increase our variety in this quilt. Swap with our neighbors, offer up a trade and have FUN with it! Pre-Cutting: From brown tone on tone ladder block fabric, cut 288, 2-1/2 squares. From assorted neutrals, cut 288, 2-1/2 X 4-1/2 rectangles and 288, 2-1/2 squares. From assorted colors, cut 144, 2-1/2 X 4-1/2 rectangles and 288, 2-1/2 squares. Don t wait until the day before class to start your cutting! Plan it out! Maybe one night, cut your constant fabrics, the next night, start on your neutrals --- and by all means, start with a new blade in your cutter! Stack your pieces, labeled in ziplock bags, and we are ready to sew! Other things to bring to class: Machine in good working order ((These are supplied on cruises, if cruising disregard!)) 1/4 foot if it has that seam guide on it, also have handy a regular open toe foot. Thread, pins, seam ripper, scissors everything you would need to sew at home. 7

8 Rotary cutter and ruler and small mat an 8.5 to 9.5 square is helpful in squaring up blocks. Small piece of template plastic ((Optional)) minimum size 2 square Marking pen or pencil, visible on light and dark fabrics Masking tape if marking seam on machine bed is needed. A SMILING FACE!! 9 #304 CRAB APPLE Friday, March 29, 2019 All Levels Block Size: 8" Finished Quilt Size: 70" X 70" Make your own grove of crabapple trees from 1.5" scraps! We will be piecing the checkerboard parts from 1.5" strips, and paper piecing the tree bases to create our trees. For this class you will need: Pattern Requirements: The book "Adventures With Leaders & Enders" is required for this class. Books will be available for purchase for $25.00 each. Tree bases: 13 Assorted 6" green squares 25 Assorted 2" brown strips at least 5" long 9

10 25 Assorted 5" light shirting print squares Tree Tops: 2 yards of assorted light scraps cut into 1.5" strips (Just cut a handful ahead of time, you can cut more as we go!) 2 yards of assorted dark scraps cut into 1.5" strips (Same as above, cut more later!) Setting Triangles (We probably won't get this far, but you will need to complete quilt) 1 yard green tone on tone Sashing: 7/8 yard red Cornerstones: 1/4 yard gold inner border: 1/2 yard brown print outer border: 1 1/4 yards red/black print Binding/backing are up to you! Paper piecing supplies: Please bring tracing paper and a pencil for tree bases. If you have the book ahead of time, you can copy the tree bases on page 31 of the Adventures With Leaders & Enders book. General Supplies needed: Sewing machine in working order (including power cords and extension cords) Thread, scissors, seam ripper, pins and any other notions you usually sew with. Rotary cutter, mat and ruler. Irons and ironing boards should be provided by the guild. Personal pressing items may be okay to use at your workstation as long as the use of power won't trip the circuits in the building leaving the room (or half the room) without power! For this workshop you will need: Sewing machine in working order with all cords, foot pedal and patchwork foot. Wooden pressing tool if individual irons are not allowed. Put those precious scraps to work for you with a dazzling quilt pattern from best-selling author Bonnie K. Hunter. Sew a rainbow of Box Kite blocks from strips and squares. Easy rotary cutting and simple patchwork make this pattern ideal for beginners, with pressing tips for perfect results! Let your imagination run wild with fabric and color placement as you play with light and dark values. And remember, if the fabric is still ugly, you just didn t cut it small enough! 11

Bring enough fabric to keep you busy during class time. We will be using the Essential Triangle Tool for both the half-square triangles in the block and the quarter-square triangles in the border all from one width of strip: 2 1/2'! The Essential Triangle Tool retails at $24.95 and will be available in class for $ Please come with a variety of 2 1/2' strips in both neutrals and in colors to keep you busy during the class time given. If cutting strips from fat-quarters, cut from the long 22 side. Each cut will give enough for one block. If strips are shorter, plan on 2 matching strips of the neutral to get enough pieces for block background. If you keep a box of 2 1/2 squares handy, those are great for block centers. Even better?
