November Guest Speaker MJ Kinman Diamond Divas & Drama Queens: Colored Gemstones as Design Inspiration The most beautiful gemstone captures light and reflects it back to us with unique brilliance, revealing its fiery personality. These are the divas and the drama queens of the gem world. Every one of them has a story to tell. just like people. The slide lecture and trunk show chronicles MJ Kinman s story her adventure in learning how to create the biggest diamonds in the world in cloth Heart of Kentucky Quilt Show We are looking for a Chair, Co Chair and someone for program ads. If you are interested let Darlene know. It s always great to have new volunteers with new ideas on the committee. MJ Kinman author, teacher, designer will be teaching a workshop on Dec. 2nd
3 MJ Kinman Textile Artist Mobile: Website: MJKinman.com Facebook: mjkinmantextileartist Bite-Size Gem Quilts: Creating a Small Faceted Quilt* Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced Subject: Single-Foundation Piecing Using the design and piecing techniques I rely on to create my diamond portraits, participants will create their own singularly beautiful work of faceted light. Using a pre-printed template based on a slice of one of my own designs, participants will learn how to code each piece for color, location, and adjacency; position template pieces onto fabric to achieve the desired light effects; and ultimately create their own unique study in faceted color. Participants will leave the class with an 18 x 18 top that can later be hand- or machine-quilted at home. Equipment needed: Projection screen (I will bring my own computer, extension cord, and digital projector) 6- or 8-foot table for horizontal quilt display Supply List: 36 inch length of freezer paper (standard 18 width) Colored pencils; regular pencils Ball point pen(s) in blue or black Eraser (preferably a gum eraser, rather than using the top of the pencil. These remove marks much better.) 18 ruler Small ruler with a ¼ measurement (I personally use a 6 Omnigrid ruler that has 3/16 th measurements, since I prefer a smaller seam allowance, but a ¼ will work fine, too. The key is, of course, consistent measurements.) Domestic sewing machine and thread assortment (neutrals or colors that match the darkest and lightest of your fabrics) Scissors and rotary cutting tools (cutter and mat) Iron and ironing pad (or board) Fabric ** -- Assortment of fat quarters (or comparable size) of cotton fabric in white, black, and up to four values of at least two different colors. (Example from first sample below: Yellow-Green fabric in pale, light, medium, bright, and dark; Lavender in pale, light medium, dark; Orange Melon in pale, light, medium, and dark) Project Samples: ** I will bring an assortment of my hand-painted fabric in a variety of colors that participants can purchase for their project.
