Stitchers Quilt Guild A HARDIN COUNTY COOPERATIVE EXTENSION HOMEMAKER CLUB Letter From The President FEBRUARY 2018 Hello Friends, Happy Valentine s Day to everyone! What a great January meeting we had since we all presented our UFO quilt projects. What a lot of work goes into each and every project. Tia showed her quilt from the Mystery workshop, it was beautiful. February meeting is your last chance to turn in your UFO Resolution. (To explain for our new members, this is for you to choose a quilt project you want to finish for next year s resolution presentations. It requires the quilt to be finished including binding and label.) If you need an entry sheet they will be on the back table during the meeting. Please turn into Darlene before the meeting is over. Thank you all that volunteered to Chair for our Quilt Show. Without you, the show would not go on. Just check with Barbara Jeffries for any information needed on the quilt show. Please begin to get together your number of volunteer hours for this year s report. I will ask for the numbers in the April meeting. If you are unable to attend, please your numbers to me. These hours include any volunteer hours you have done from 1 July 17 until 30 June 18. With that being said, please estimate your hours for May and June and please include them. I also need the number of books you have read. Our next monthly meeting is February 28th. See you there! Darlene Our next meeting is February 28. Time is 6:30. There will not be refreshments. Don t forget to check out our Facebook page for pictures from the meetings, copies of newsletters, class supply list and much more. Sincerely, Dayna Parrett County Extension Agent for Family & Consumer Sciences
Quilt Show The next meeting is March 19th at 6pm in the auditorium. Everyone is welcome Paducah Bus Trip April 21st Cost is $25.00 for members and $50.00 for non members. Meet at the Extension Office by 7:00 am. You must park in the back. There is a bathroom on the bus. We will have dinner at Cracker Barrel on the way home. Mary Hikes brought a wonderful dish to the November meeting. It was a real hit and Kelly asked if she would share it...mary said yes! Chicken & Sweet Potato Chowder 2 T butter 1 large onion, chopped 2-3 sweet potatoes peeled and cut into cubes 2 (14-oz) cans chicken broth 2 cloves fresh garlic chopped 1 t dried or 1 T fresh thyme leaves 2-3 cups chicken (I use fresh tenders) cut in pieces corn (I prefer frozen... add as much or as little... I like a lot of it, so I use a large bag) 1/2 t paprika 2 cups half & half Stitchers Quilt Guild Officers President Darlene Chenault st Vice President Sharon Whitfield nd Vice Presidents Martha Brooks Patty Pruitt Secretary Barbara Jeffries Treasurer Betty Hancock stitchersquiltguildtreasurer@gmail.com Newsletter Barbara Dixon /4 cup flour salt and pepper to taste Melt butter in pot and sauté onion, garlic and chicken together. Add sweet potatoes, chicken broth, thyme and paprika and simmer until potatoes are tender. Combine half & half with flour, mix until smooth. Gradually add half & half mixture to potato mixture stirring constantly, until it is thickened (about 10 minutes). I probably let it simmer for about an hour so everything gets acquainted, and it always tastes better made the day before you are going to serve it. This recipe makes 8 servings. I doubled it, which gives you a large crock pot for a crowd. I like lots of chicken, potato and corn in my chowder, so I usually add more than the recipe calls for. Thanks, Mary
Workshops Martha Brooks All classes are held at the Extension office, 201 Peterson Drive, in Elizabethtown. Classes are Friday evening and all day Saturday unless otherwise noted. If changes occur, everyone will be notified via Stitchers . These classes are for beginners to advanced quilters. On Saturdays - please bring your lunch, sewing machine, and supplies needed. March 10th LANDSCAPE QUILTING CLASS Larry McKenney April Workshop with Cynthia Wiseman May Puff Pillow Betty Hancock June 8-9 T-Shirt Quilts Sharon Whitfield If there are questions, please me at marthasinklink@yahoo.com or come and speak to me at the meeting. Guild Workshop Cancellation Policy If you sign up for workshops, classes or other activity, you need to notify Martha Brooks if you are cancelling. Refunds are only given with a 7 day notice of cancellation. Cynthia Wiseman is scheduled to have a class in April the week before Paducah. The Stitchers had her come to teach a class last year during the same time. The class would be a one day class. I am looking at different classes Cynthia s time frame would allow. So far we have come up with two. You can view them on her website. What Cynthia and I have talked about is the rooster and the three purple pumpkins. You would be able to choose the one you want to make. The cost for the kit has not yet been decided by Cynthia. I am in touch with her and should know more soon. I am hoping to have additional information by our next meeting. We all had fun at Lynette's class on the 16 and 17. The next 2 days were UFO days, and again we did have fun as everyone worked on their own. I know the calendar is done for this year but does anyone want anything different for a class? Please feel free to offer suggestions for classes. Let me know at our monthly meetings or me. Thanks, Martha Brooks

LANDSCAPE QUILTING CLASS LARRY MCKENNEY SATURDAY, MARCH 10, 2018 (10:00 -???) Cost is $20.00 Participants will receive instruction on the basic design elements of a landscape and then will create their own interpretation of a landscape quilt. Starting with background fabric, we will build layers for the middle ground and the foreground using Misty fuse a lightweight fusible. Using fabric paints and/or fabric markers, details will be brought out to enhance the piece and give it depth and dimension. Demonstrations will be given on free-motion quilting to finish the quilt. Materials list: 1. One piece of foam core board (20 X 30) covered with batting. Wrap the batting around the board and tape it to the back using masking tape. Tis will be your work station and make it easy to carry back and forth to the ironing station. 2. Small rotary cutter I suggest an 18mm. It is easy to manipulate and cut intricate areas. 3. Scissors I suggest a small pair and a large pair. The smaller ones are good for cutting small areas box of parchment paper. (we use this so the fusing does not clog up iron) 5. Black sharpie marker (fine point and extra fine point work very well.) Fabrics: 1 yard of plain white cotton (can be muslin, bleached or unbleached) I work with a lot of textured fabrics like Stonehedge and Batiks. ¼ to ½ yard cuts should be enough. For a spring or summer landscape you will need 3 to 4 values of green, black, brown or gray (for tree trunks) and sky fabric For an autumn landscape you will need red, yellow, orange for leaves and either black, brown, or gray or the tree trunks. Continued on next page
Landscape Quilt Class Continued: If you want you can do a mono-chromatic landscape using five or six values of one color (ex, purple, blue, etc) For the tree trunks I like to use a textured fabric rather than a solid. The textured fabric gives more authentic look to the tree. Threads: Choose threads to match the fabrics you will be using. I like to use variegated threads because they blend well. Misty fuse will be available: Cost is $1.50 per yard. Bring an empty paper towel roll to roll it onto. Other items to bring: Cushion to sit on. Iron and ironing surface. Rotary cutters/mats/rulers Basic sewing materials: pins, needles, seam ripper etc Sewing machine in good working condition Bring lunch and/or snack. Beverages will be provided.
