I was president our very first year and a half year several years later. I read about quilt groups in magazines and wanted to be in one. One person can't really start a group, but I did put goofy posters in several places and wrote several notices about forming a quilt group. I had phone calls from people who wanted me to arrange a meeting and I put another piece in the paper about that. We met for the first time in October of 1993 with 12 quilters. The rest, as they say, is history. I'm glad some of our original members are still with us, plus many others who keep us going. What actually keeps us going is ideas for fun and interesting meetings and projects. We've had Round Robins/Border Bashes, Mystery Quilts, many challenge projects, some as simple as 2 1/2 inch strips in a bag. We've had sewins and potlucks, trouble shooting sessions and information on great gadgets and quilting equipment. AND lots of encouragement to keep creating and conquering those UFOs. SOOO--please feel free to share any ideas you have for things we can do in Columbine Quilters. I'm sure Rebecca has some great programs for us in Columbine Quilters January 7, 2017 Welcome: The January meeting of Columbine Quilters was called to order by President Cheryl Yergler on January 7, Minutes: The minutes were approved as printed in the newsletter. Treasurer s report: Beginning balance of $ with expenses of $30 for the president s gift for total expenses of $30. Income was $180 for dues with an ending balance of $ Cheryl reminded everyone that dues are due next month (February). Guests: Eva Vietch, Debi Saliman, Janet Slocum, Kim Lindel, Sue Lorimer, Barb K., and Susan Werner. Announcements: Eva Vietch talked about the various programs provided by Region 10 which will be the recipient of the money made in the BCQS boutique. New business:

2 An amendment to the bylaws had been ed to members stating, Section 1. A change to extend the current Treasurer s term for the year of 2017 Judy moved and Kathi seconded that the motion be approved, and the motion passed. An addition was made to the CQ procedures: Photographer: To take pictures at meetings, have them processed at Walgreen s, picking them up on the 10 cent per copy day, and giving them to the Historian for the history book. For more information go to: This could be fun to try and accomplish. Tip of the Month~ As you purchase fabric to add to your quilting stash, label each piece with paper or masking tape. On this label, mark the amount, date, and location of purchase. It is easy to tell at a glance if you have enough fabric for a specific project without measuring it every time, and the date and location will help if you wish to purchase more of the same fabric for a future project (or if a quilting friend admires it and wants to buy some.) A little WD-40 will get lipstick stains out of fabric For warmth and utility, choose a thick, fluffy batting. To show off lots of intricate quilting, choose as thin of batting as possible. Run a dryer sheet over your thread before sewing to keep tangles away.

4 Black Canyon News A reminder to Guild members that the Challenge Quilt theme is Stars Among Us. Quilt Show entry forms are available, with instructions, at the Black Canyon web site. Early entry forms are encouraged! Mark your calendars for April 7! Gail Garber will present a lecture "Quilt Makers and their Influence" and an all day class on April 8 "Little Goose Fly Away Home". Programs Do you have some great fabric you picked up at a quilt show vendor or a local quilt shop, but don t know what you want to do with it? Maybe you d be interested in joining a BOM, BOW, or BOD. What do those acronyms mean? BOM: Block of the Month BOW: Block of the Week BOD: Block of the Day In this program, I will show you some completed BOMs, a BOW, and even a BOD a quilt made in 2016 of 365 different blocks. You ll also receive some information about some similar programs you can participate in for It s not too late to start one and just play a little catch up.

5 March: A sew in making Snap Happy purses. Kits will be provided. Glue guns and scissors that you want to use to cut metal with. The Dollar store scissors work very well. The size is the large ones. Tin snips do not work. Sewing machines and the regular sewing supplies. ******************************************************************************************************* Chicken and Spinach Soup Take 6 cups of Chicken broth, 1 clove crushed garlic, and 2 10-ounce packages frozen spinach or 1 ½ pounds fresh spinach (if fresh spinach is used, it must be cleaned thoroughly and chopped) and 2 cups diced cooked chicken in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil, then add ½ cup long-grain rice, ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg, 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice, black pepper and salt to taste and simmer until the rice is cooked but firm Starting this month will be getting a short tour of different members sewing rooms or spaces.
