1 Quilting Along the River Gorge Quilters Guild President s Message This is my last newsletter musings as your president. Elizabeth Garber will soon take over the duties. I am thrilled the guild is moving forward with Elizabeth s experienced leadership. I am extremely proud of our guild. Four years ago I did not know many of the 127 local area quilters that make up our membership. Today you are my quilting buddies, road trip and shop hop friends. Four years ago we had no experience forming a non-profit; today with Gayle s experience, we are incorporated, we file taxes, and we pay presenters. We have a constitution, bylaws, a board and operating procedures. Three quilt shows later the Columbia River Gorge Quilters Guild is a presence in the gorge and the region. Recently the guild was invited to join both a regional consortium and a local art alliance. CRGQG is known and respected as a cultural and art organization. As for me the journey of guild making was a huge learning curve, a very fun adventure. I thank you for your commitment to quilting in the gorge. You made the guild happen. I look forward to doing some serious quilting. In this newsletter, you can read about Elizabeth s plans and needs for the guild. We have some wonderful activities coming up. I am told 40 members signed up for the Challenge. Our retreat is so popular we have two session this year, thanks to Barbs leadership. There is talk of a Round Robin and I would like to hear from anyone interested in start in Art Quilt group. Our Charity quilt program is growing. There is an opening on the board for VP Program Director. The job is about done for 2011; Elizabeth has lined up presenters and location for most of the quarterly meetings. It is a great job, you talk with many interesting quilters and learn about their classes. 2 February Meeting The February Quarterly will be at a new site for us. We will be at the Port of Cascade Locks Marine Park, a beautiful site on the Columbia River. Thanks to Pat Power for arranging this space. We will start at the usual 10 AM time. Our speakers are a group of women who will talk about the perfect combination books and quilts. Several members of the group Thread Tales will visit us. We will learn how their group got started and what they do. After a short review the quilts are shown and we see how the printed word takes on new meaning in fabric. There will be time for discussion and questions over lunch. There will be something new also. We're having a potluck! We will be able to visit with our guests and have more time to enjoy their books and stories. The guild will provide a main dish, beverage and table service. So polish up your best salad or dessert recipes and come on down. Directions: From the West: take the Cascade Locks exit (or come over the Bridge of the Gods from Washington) and drive through town to SW Portage Rd on the left. Turn toward the river at the sign for the Port of Cascade Lock Marine park. Go under the overpass and turn right. The building is the first building on the left, From the East: take the Cascade Locks exit and you will find SW Portage Rd before the downtown. Follow the same directions as above. DUES are DUE Gayle has been working on sending out the invoices. Most of those should be in your box. If you haven t yet received yours, it s OK to send in your dues for 2011 anyway. The dues are still only $25 for all four quarterlies and guild meeting activities. Check out her website to see some of her work. The location to be announced. GUILD RETREAT: coming in MARCH March 25-27, 2011 are the dates for our 3rd annual quilt retreat to be held at Suttle Lake Camp. We have 2 spots left as of this date, and would love to fill the spaces. We hopefully will have five shops on our route this year for our own mini-shop hop. Come join us for camaraderie, sewing time and door prizes! At the February meeting, information on the camp schedule, medical forms, and maps to camp will be available. At the beginning of March, retreatees will get an with the shop hop information. Questions? 3 Good News for the CHALLENGE Quilt Attention all challenge quilters! Forty people signed up for the challenge at the Nov meeting! We are glad you are as excited as we are. We sold out of the challenge fabric at the meeting, but have managed to find 7 more yards. Since we voted to enter the 8 best challenge quilts into the national show for 2012, it is vital that your quilts have the official fabric. That is Ellie's Emporium by Fine Lines EE Black. E.T.C. has a fabric with smaller dots, but it is not the correct fabric. If you choose, you could add some of this to the official fabric, but your quilt must contain at least some of the Ellie's Emporium multi-sized, multi-colored dots. Fabric Depot has a similar one as well but the dots are not the same colors. Sorry about the confusion. If your would like to sign up or didn't get fabric, call Kathy Anderson and she will set aside some fabric for you. At this time we must limit it to no more than 1/2 yd., but if we find more we'll let you know and you could buy more later. You can also sign up at the February meeting. The price is $5 to sign up, which will be returned when you turn your quilt in at the August meeting. Fabric is $2 for 1/4 yd. (tell me if you'd prefer a fat qtr) and $4 a half yd. Start planning your quilt. *** Size of the quilts must be between 30" and 60" on a side. *** What a great winter project! See you in Feb. Be sure to bring your finished blocks to the February meeting and you could be the lucky winner of the blocks for this quilt. We re introducing another new block at our February meeting and we ll be displaying a sample quilt using the new block. The program works like this: At every meeting, you buy a prepackaged block kit (fabric for one block, instructions to make the block and one raffle ticket The kits sell for $2 each or 3 for $5 (to cover the cost of the materials used in the kit) At the next quarterly meeting, you turn in a raffle ticket along with each completed block. During the meeting, we will draw one ticket and that lucky participant will receive enough blocks to make the quilt. (If we get enough blocks back, we could have two winners again!) We hope you are enjoying making the blocks! Please bring your finished blocks to the February meeting. Or you can mail finished blocks to us ahead of time and still be in the drawing to win. Is it a Fat Sparrow, or a Circling Buzzard? The conversation in the car on our recent road trip is a little hard to explain. Rather hilarious at the time. Gayle and I were discussing our upcoming ROUND ROBIN project when our husbands started in with their suggestions: such as not such a thing as a round robin- it doesn t go in circles- but would a fat sparrow? They finally concluded that we could call it a circling buzzard. You have to understand that these two gentlemen have been very forbearing with the quilt shop obsession on this trip. Our new ROUND ROBIN PRO- JECT will be announced at the February Guild Meeting. It is a new concept, and will involve a landscape picture of your choice. We will be working in groups of 5. SOOO- hope you will be as excited as I am to embark on this new journey. We will sign up in Feb, have 5 meetings, and have the quilts ready to display for the Sept Quilt show. Be ready for more specific information at the meeting! Barb Frasier, Round Robin Chair for Ronald McDonald House Fundraiser Ronald McDonald House has an ongoing fundraiser collecting pull tabs from any kind of can - soda, soup, fruit, etc. Last year $6,000 was raised for the local home. Save your tabs in a jar and bring them to each meeting. Kathy Anderson will see that they are delivered.
