1 Columbia River Gorge Quilters Guild President s Message: Tis the season to be quilting You have to love winter in the North if you are a quilter. Most of the time, the weather keeps you indoors, which is a great excuse to sit down at your machine. Last month, I joined an online group for a Mystery Quilt project. Being a long time quilter and having made many a mystery quilt, I found the process easy and fun. However, many of the participants were first-time mystery quilters or even first time quilt makers from around the world. They struggled with directions, raved about helpful You Tube tutorials (especially non-native English speakers) and celebrated finishes. It was fun to congratulate them on their successes and commiserate over sessions with Jack the Ripper. I was struck by the many comments by seasoned quilters who became impatient with silly questions, the inability to follow directions, and lack of basic sewing skills by new quilters. Some comments were downright snarky. As a teacher, I am accustomed to working with groups with a large span of backgrounds and experiences. I always encouraged my students to lend a helping hand to their classmates if I couldn t assist right away. If too many students were struggling it was my fault, not theirs! Next Meeting - February 16, 2019 Registration: 9:30 am Where: Grace Baptist Church Meeting: 10:00 to 12:00 noon 1280 W. Also, after the 2019 retreat, Tomme and Nina are stepping down as Retreat Chairs, and we're looking for a new person (or team) to chair future retreats. They say they have everything "down to a fine science," and it's an easy and fun job! Let President Kim Vogel know if you'd be interested in taking over this fun job. President s Message, continued from page 1: We have some exciting classes coming up in These are opportunities to learn something new, fine tune a skill or simply enjoy the company of friends. I encourage seasoned quilters to reach out to their tablemates and for newbies to ask for help while they are sewing. We are all better when we work together. Remember the Quilting Bees; it took many hands, from young to old, to make those quilts we cherish. Happy Sewing, Kim Vogel, President Page 2

3 CRGQG Exhibits Upcoming Exhibits: February White Salmon Library Impressions of the Gorge, an exhibit of recent work by members of Beyond the Block: Art Quilters of the Gorge. This weekend show reaches hundreds of visitors attending Hood River BlossomFest. It s an incredible opportunity to reach the general public with an eye-popping display of all that s happening in quilting today. Finish up a UFO or make a new quilt for this very popular exhibit. Quilts sell every year at this show if you re ready to let go of one. You can drop off quilts at the February guild meeting or at the March and April Guild Sewing Days. More details at the February Guild meeting. CRGQG Gorge Quilt Show October 18-19, 2019 (Not yet confirmed) - Hood River Armory Let s top our 2018 success! Start now planning your entries and making items to sell at the show boutique. Now is the perfect time to add a Quilt Market box or bag to your studio so it s handy when you find stuff you no longer use or want.. Kathleen Roulet , karoulet@yahoo.com More Quilt Show News! Marbe Cook and Claudia Noldge are organizing the feature display for our 2019 Quilt Show. Guild members will be invited to add Halloween quilts to the display. More details to be revealed in May but OK to start thinking of possibilities now. Challenge Update Your Song I hope you all are having fun working on your entry for the Your Song quilt challenge. At least I have my fabric cut out and I have a plan, but that s as far as I am. Of course, I changed my song a couple of times too! LOL Here s some more details of how the May meeting reveal will happen: I ll need to collect the quilts approximately a week prior to the actual meeting so I can get them mounted prior to the meeting (at that time you can provide me with the song title.) Each quilt will be assigned a random number. The day of the meeting, the quilts will all be hung with their corresponding numbers. Guild members will be given a ballot with numbers and blanks for them to guess the name of the song AND a blank for them to vote for Viewer s Choice. Prizes will be given for: Quilt that has the most correct guesses Quilt that stumps everyone (no one guesses the correct song title) Person that guesses the most song titles Viewer s Choice So that I know how many quilts to plan on, I ll be handing out intent slips at the February meeting, so that I can make sure we connect and I don t miss your quilt! IF YOU WILL NOT BE AT THE FEBRUARY MEET- ING but plan to submit a challenge quilt, PLEASE CONTACT ME by or phone. THANKS! Susan Smitty Price, Challenge Chair smittyorsusan@gmail.com, (805) Page 3

4 Treasurer s Report Checking Account Balance on 1/11/19 $22, Savings Account Balance on 12/21/18 $22, Trying to send out the P&L for the newsletter continues to be a challenge with the new accounting software. The itemized P&L will be available at the February meeting for anyone to look at. Claudia Noldge, Treasurer Facebook Page Marbe has been keeping our FB page up to date on the many activities our guild is involved in. You can find it at Columbia River Gorge Quilters Guild. Go take a look and like it and tell your friends all of them! Then check back weekly for the latest information and updates dates, locations and photos. If you like it you ll receive notices when Marbe updates the page. If you have your own FB page let Marbe know. She can link it to our FB page if you d like. If you have a photo or news to contribute, send it to: Marbe Cook, marbeboer@gmail.com A custom-made storage bag makes a nice presentation if you re giving a quilt as a gift. Construct one or two extra blocks and try these ideas: Sew the extra blocks together and add enough border fabric to make one side of the storage bag. Make a storage bag of white fabric. Line an extra block with white fabric and sew it to the outside of the bag as a pocket for a greeting card. Make a pillowcase of the leftover quilt fabric, the right size to hold the gift quilt. Beyond the Block Art Quilt Group Monday, January 21 at 2 p.m. Monday, February 18 at 2 p.m. Both meetings at Down Manor Craft Room We had a great Holiday Party at Moody- Tollbridge Tasting Room in The Dalles on Dec. 3rd! Fourteen quilted postcards were exchanged and each one was a creative, original design. Several more were given as a Thank You to Peggy Dills Kelter for writing the wonderful article about Beyond the Block in The Gorge Magazine. Kay Skov kkskov@gmail.com Comfort Quilts Keep on sewing these cold winter days! We are short on laps for the White Salmon Hospital, but make what you like. All is appreciated! Kathy and Kim Look Again! Once you ve determined the block placement in a quilt, take a picture of the layout with your phone or digital camera. A different perspective can help you see things you might have missed. This works well with color placement, sashing and border sizes too. Membership Gift Certificates Have you been trying to get your sister to come to guild activities with you? Give her a membership for her birthday. What about that neighbor that keeps procrastinating? Give her a gift certificate. $25 for four meetings four interesting and informative lectures is the best deal around. Easy for you, good for her! Ask when you sign in. Your sister/neighbor/mom will love you and your guild will thank you. Page 4
