2 August - September 2018 WYOMING PATCHWORDS - Wyoming State Quilt Guild Newsletter Page 2 Jennifer P. Golden, President My first newsletter note is to all of the WSQG members thank you for the support and encouragement you have shown to each other and to me in the fine art of quilting and being a positive example to the new quilters in our community, after all our mission is to unite those who love the quilters art, to preserve the heritage of quilting and be a source of education. I think the central committee did a fantastic job fulfilling our mission at Quilt Wyoming 2018! Thank you for all the hard work you put in for us to have such a good time! As I write this note my heart is especially happy In the last 12 days I have gotten to experience several things that make my heart sing quilting with friends, old and new, being with family, and riding my motorcycle with my geriatric gang. These things are the things that make me happy and I wish for all of you to find those things that make you happy and that you take the time to do those things. I hope to see many of you at the events throughout the state this year please look at the events listed in Patchwords and on the website there are many to choose from and at least one will be close to you! 3 August - September 2018 WYOMING PATCHWORDS - Wyoming State Quilt Guild Newsletter Page 3 MARIANNA EDGAR We were notified this month that Founding Member, Marianna Edgar passed away one year ago on July 20, Although we would have liked to have reported her death sooner, we nonetheless feel saddened losing a founding member, friend and fellow quilter. She learned to sew from her mother and made clothes for her two daughters. After her daughters left the nest, Marianna responded to a flyer in a fabric shop and signed up to take a quilting class in She was hooked. She made many quilting friends, including those in the Cheyenne Heritage Quilters where she served as President in Her husband was injured in a car accident in 2007 so she spent much of her time caring for him. Even though she could no longer attend as many quilting activities she continued to sew with several close friends on a regular basis. Marianna, Thank you for joining those Wyoming quilters who had a vision for the state quilt guild. Most of these ladies continue to be active in the Wyoming State Quilt Guild Founding Members: Jeanne Allen, Florence Brown, Twila Christensen, Penny Cruickshank, Gail Cummings, Jan Debolt, Marianna Edgar (deceased), Sherry Fink, Marilyn Ford (deceased), Gloria Greenlee, Cynthia Girewahn, Betty Hoff, Eva Knight, Ceil Miner, Daenette More, Carolyn Normington, Lois Paules, Donna Schneider, Bonny Stonemark, Patty Swanson, Nancy Vase, Wilda Vance (deceased) Reminiscing... Disconnected moments scroll through my mind storybooks with tales of pioneer girls making quilts; mother with a sewing machine that I couldn t use because my feet were not long enough to reach the floor pedal. I grew. My feet touched. I made clothes, not quilts. I married, bought a simple sewing machine; and one fateful day around 1972, I met Her in a fabric shop. Her a chance encounter with a stranger. The thudding bolt flipped as yards of fabric were measured. Curtains? I asked. Quilt back, she answered. Ooh, I responded, I m going to make quilts when I retire. She fixed me with a stare, Honey, if you re going to make quilts, you get to making them. You got no guarantee of your eyes. Memories from Eva Knight That day I became a quilter. I bought muslin. The pioneer girls used muslin. I invested in the remains of a bolt of orange and white check polyester and headed home to copy a bedspread in a Sears catalogue. Who knew the pattern was Ohio Star? Or that a great quilt revival was starting? Or that rotary cutters would be invented? Or that all of this would gather momentum and lead to founding the Wyoming State Quilt Guild? Gratitude overwhelms me. Thank you for the honor of the Golden Thimble. The news sent my mind back to the backseat of a car of quilt friends headed from Cheyenne to Rawlins to see if the Wyoming State Quilt Guild would happen. As the miles rolled, I designed our logo Indian Paintbrush set with Wyoming brown and gold nine patches. WSQG happened! We forged our mission statement and planned the first QuiltWyoming. When I got home I drafted our by-laws and set about to get tax-exempt status. Look at us now 21 years old! You, dear members, thrill me. Our regional system has encouraged and enhanced quilting across the state. Every five years QuiltWyoming gathers somewhere near you and you come! You use WSQG quilt stands to hold local shows. Your county library gets quilt themed books every year. You shop hop local shops there s nothing like feeling the fabrics. You are the momentum that preserves and advances the beautiful art of quilting. Your enthusiasm encourages new generations of quilters. Be proud of yourselves. Now, 46 years since I cut Ohio Star blocks with scissors, my family has quilts bed quilts and wall quilts. Those 46 years have brought unimaginable changes. Think of the sewing machines and tools we use. Consider the fabrics and techniques. Of course, it s not a quilt until its quilted. By hand is cherished, but new machines and free motion have revolutionized the process. All of this is wonderful. Yet, the true heart of quilting beats in each of us friendship. We may not sit around large frames as our foremothers did, but friendship and caring pulse in our hearts. They are the life blood of WSQG. Blessings, friends. Eva Knight

5 August - September 2018 WYOMING PATCHWORDS - Wyoming State Quilt Guild Newsletter Page 5 Quilt Wyoming 2018 Quilt Camp The Board voted and approved to have Quilt Camp as a class during Quilt Wyoming for the first time this year. Participants were required to be new quilters. They were not required to pay registration or class fees and received a kit to construct a quilt. Quilt Wyoming committee members Mo Young and Wendy Shipley volunteered to organize and teach the quilt camp. Their hard work paid off. Nine quilters finished their quilts! We hope this experiment results in a continuing Quilt Camp class at future Quilt Wyomings to introduce the quilter's art to new quilters ages If members of a guild or a group of volunteers helps teach for a couple hours each, then it will not cause the volunteers to miss too much of Quilt Wyoming.

7 August - September 2018 WYOMING PATCHWORDS - Wyoming State Quilt Guild Newsletter Page 7 NORTHWEST Michelle Quick A great round of applause for April Pendleton and Deb Zelenak and their merry crew in the Central region for a terrific QW. Great food, facilities, teachers and trunk shows! So much fun, now I cannot wait to get to work stitching on my two new projects. I took two hand classes so I would not have to lug my sewing machine around. It was so much fun to have a tiny show and tell at the evening program. 'Already looking forward to Cheyenne next July. From around the NW region: Marci at Hearts-N- Home in Worland has a quilt hanging in her shop for a Jan Barnett class September 15th. The fee will be $25. Call Marci at for more info. Sue at Gooseberry Gardens in Thermopolis has settled into her new shop and is reveling in the expanded space. She has a wonderful Block of the Month underway, stay tuned for next year s project. Vicki at Friends & Company in Cody has a fun binding class July 31 at 5:00. Contact the shop at I was in the shop during one of her kids classes. There was lots of laughing and great looking projects. Yellowstone Quilt Fest will be September 6-8 in Cody at the Cody Auditorium. We are looking for entries, go to for entry and show information. Plan a road trip to Cody for this excellent show. The QW 2019 Opportunity Quilt will be hanging at the show. The Quick Quilt Retreat will be held October at the Holiday Inn in Cody. Space is limited. Contact me soon at quicksfamily@gmail.com for more info or to reserve a spot. REGIONAL DIRECTORS The next retreats will be April 10-14, 2019, and October 23-27, That is all for now. Happy stitching! Michelle Quick NORTHEAST Sherryl Buck 'Hope your summer is going well, and if you are a summer quilter that you are making good progress! The big quilting that I normally do in summer is the annual convention. I had a great time there again. Thank you to the Central Region for providing good teachers and classrooms, good food, and a good Quilt Camp experience at Quilt Wyoming. Congratulations to Eva for winning the challenge quilt contest, Roamer category, as well as the Golden Thimble Award. I look forward to the inspiration that you continue to provide. My personal schedule has been very hectic this spring and early summer. I hope to have a chance to stay home a bit more to help me focus on my ongoing attempt to manage my stash pile. I took a bit of time off from that project to finish a quilt that was a wedding gift for my God Daughter thank you Jennifer Golden for quilting it it was very well received! I started a baby quilt at Quilt Wyoming that will need some attention in the next few weeks to get it completed. That did provide leverage to use some smaller pieces of the stash. Then it will be full focus on the garden and haying activities that book up my late summer. I hope to have an entry in the Northeast Wyoming Quilt show which will be October 6 and 7 at the Gillette CamPlex Energy Hall. They hung more than 370 quilts last year. It would be wonderful if we could enjoy even more quilts this year! Please consider entering a quilt or quilted object. Plan to come and see all of the entries. ET Quilts in Buffalo is sponsoring sewing machine service every other month. August will be the next opportunity to sign up for service. They are also offering a new sale room. Items will be added often. Come over and check out the new sale room. If it s been awhile since your machine was serviced, give them a call and get on the schedule. I recently had my machine serviced and was gratified to hear it hum along nicely. Good for the machine as well as the user to have regular service and to change your needle often! Sherryl Buck

9 August - September 2018 WYOMING PATCHWORDS - Wyoming State Quilt Guild Newsletter Page 9 CENTRAL Julie Haptonstall Hi all. I m your newly-elected Regional Director for Central! I would like to thank Deb Zelenak for all the hard work that she did for us as the RD for the Central region for the past four years. I just got back from Quilt Wyoming This was my first year serving on the planning committee. What an exciting experience that was. I believe that everyone should serve on the planning committee just once to see what goes on and to help appreciate the work involved. Quilt Camp this year was a new class designed for students who had little to no experience with quilting, to learn how to quilt and to possibly leave the two-day class with a completed quilt! The students did have a great time and showed some amazing quilts. Here are a couple things happening in the Central region: The Quilting Rendezvous retreat is almost full! There are only five spots left. Call Deb Zelenak, (307) before sending in your registration to make sure there is still room. The retreat is scheduled for September 6-9 at the Wind River Casino in Riverton. This regional event is a UFO/work-onyour-own-project retreat with a short mystery class taught by Jennifer Golden. Only two coordinating fat quarters and a zipper foot are needed for the class. The registration form can be found on page 10 and on the website. Send in your reservation to hold your spot. Space is limited. Stitches N Time from Sonia Cottrell Summer is half over and I haven t finished the projects I had planned to finish. Now I have a new project I want to continue working from Quilt Wyoming It s the clothesline basket that was taught by our English speaking presenter, Catherine Redford. It was a very enjoyable class and there were many steps to learn. I will be thinking about teaching this project to our Stitches N Time group in Douglas. For the past two years, our group has been making Checkbook Covers for QW2018. Our goal was to make 200. We made 196, which was the exact number of registered quilters. If you picked one up on Friday evening at dinner, you can thank our group of devoted quilters. At last I must tell you about an exciting thing that happened to me at Quilt Wyoming I won one of the $200 scholarships for QW2019. Thank you QW2018! Reviewing what we have done at Stitches N Time on the first Saturday of each month: In June we did another wall hanging with a watering can full of flowers appliquéd onto a light REGIONAL DIRECTORS colored background fabric, then surrounded by squares at the top and pinwheels at the bottom. In July we worked on a red, white and blue Hunter Star table runner. Some quilters chose to make three blocks to put long ways, some chose to do a square table runner and I chose to put two side by side and eight down. They were all very striking with the bright reds and blues. This one was made by Deanna Lindeman. In August we are going to work on Art Quilts by using our scraps of colorful blues for a beach scene, oranges, yellows and browns for a fall scene, greens, pinks and purples for a spring scene, or white and grays for a winter scene. These will then be sewn with appropriate embellishments that enhance the look of the scene. At Glendo EWC Quilting (Eastern Wyoming College) we have been meeting every Thursday this summer at the Glendo Town Hall. We have been doing the same projects as the Stitches N Time Guild in Douglas except for the Crown Royal Quilts that Sonia, Tami, and Mary have been working on. We chose to do the traditional pattern. They turned out beautifully. I will put a picture in next issue as they are at the quilters now. Mary and I will each be working on a freedom charity quilt for Heart Song Quilt Store in Hot Springs, South Dakota Tami Gentry and Sue Tuck worked on these purses. Sonia The Prairie Stitcher from Tammy Townsend 'Hope you all had a wonderful time at state. I've heard great stuff from many people. Be sure to stop by with your coupon from the Prairie Stitcher by August 31st to redeem. We will have several classes and store happenings this fall. I don't have dates yet but will soon. Classes will include Beginning and Intermediate Quilting, a table runner, a very cute Christmas tree wall hanging, kids sewing and more. As always Sagebrush Sisters meet the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. as well as open sew on Monday afternoons. Open sew is free. Come and join the fun. We can still cut kits for Ribbon Rainbow and Christmas Cheer block of the month but will run out of fabrics soon so order yours now. Both are just beautiful. Central continued on page 11...

11 August - September 2018 WYOMING PATCHWORDS - Wyoming State Quilt Guild Newsletter Page 11...Central continued from page 9 New fabrics arrive daily. I just got in the new dog fabrics from Loralie and they are so cute. We have really fun camping fabric, two sets of chicken fabric plus lots of other new stuff. A new button order just came and they are fun to include on a quilt, wall hanging, bag, or whatever your heart desires. Tammy REGIONAL DIRECTORS Kalico Kat Quilt Shop from Sandie Swanson I had great fun vending for the first time at Quilt Wyoming. I saw quilting friends, who I haven't seen in many years. That made the experience fabulous. I want to thank everyone who visited my booth. Mostly, I want to thank the Central region for doing a great job. I know the work that goes into this. I am hoping to participate in years ahead. Everything is back in its place at The Kalico Kat. We are having fun with Row x Row and Shop Hop visitors. September will bring us to Torrington, for the Quilts Along the Platte Quilt Show and the Lander Quilt Show. Before that, going-aquilting at the Central Region Quilting Rendezvous in Riverton... hope to see you there!!! GOING OUT OF BUSINESS SALE 25% OFF FABRIC - 50% WOOL, EMBROIDERY ITEMS, BOOKS AND PATTERNS EVERYTHING MUST GO BY SEPTEMBER 30, 2018 Never Sweat Needlers from Eileen Grove Right now we're really busy preparing for our big Quilt Show on August 10-12, We're expecting to have at least 150 quilts to be displayed, as well as the Cowboy Auction (20 various themed baskets), our Boutique, six vendors (including sewing machine service), food available for workers and vendors, and the raffle of this year's quilt, Circle of Friends, on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. On September 29th, Lickety Stitch Quilts will teach us how to make a Barn Quilt Block, 2' x 2', on a wooden base. We're looking forward to that! Quite a number of us are planning to attend the Quick Quilt Retreat in Cody October We've been making our reservations to insure a space (and a room!). It's always so much fun and we do get quite a lot of sewing done on our individual projects! We continue to work on Quilts of Valor for our Veterans. We've already chosen the pattern for next year's club raffle quilt, a variation of a Log Cabin Quilt, and we hope to purchase some fabrics for it at our own quilt show vendors. Then we'll cut, kit it, and pass them out to willing members to sew! We helped out our town librarian with bright fabrics for preschoolers so they can make drumsticks as one of their activities. Prepare for rhythm and word rituals! We're considering a new project for the guild...a birthday club or a UFO Completion challenge. Of course a new President's Challenge will also be revealed, probably in September! Eileen Julie Haptonstall

In addition to the quilt show and lunch, the group treated themselves to shopping at a local quilt store. The latest challenge for the Sweetwater County Quilt Guild members is to create a miniature quilt up to 160 inches in perimeter. The theme is Cowboy and entries much be completed by the January meeting, after which they will be displayed at the Sweetwater County Museum during the month of February, Although the guild is not holding summer meetings, members will have a Project Linus presentation at their September meeting. Members are also planning to bring an orphan block in a paper bag to the September meeting. Each member who wants to participate will take a bag and complete a quilt project using that orphan block. Professional Twist the Night Away by Shelley Rowland Mayor s Choice - Twist the Night Away by Shelley Rowland Members of Sweetwater Piecemakers, the Rock Springs quilt guild, are working on a guild challenge. Earlier this year, guild members rolled dice to determine which shape, fabric type and colors must be included in their challenge project. Completed challenge projects will be shared at the October meeting. Members are also looking forward to the annual ice cream social which is always held at the August meeting. Quilt Wyoming members of the Southwest Region are planning Quilt Wyoming 2020 which will be held in Rock Springs. The theme has been chosen and the quilt has been designed by Nancy Vase. We are still working to finalize arrangements with Western Wyoming Community College as the venue for classes, vendors, meals, trunk shows, etc. Unfortunately, Western Wyoming Community College will not allow us to use the dorms so we will negotiate favorable rates with a local motel for housing. National teachers are being selected. NACQJ (National Association of Certified Quilt Judges) Award Sisters by Carol Wagner On October 5 th and 6 th the 7th annual Hunters Widow Retreat will be held in Rock Springs. Further details will be forthcoming. I just returned from Quilt Wyoming 2018 in Riverton. It was a wonderful event attended by almost 200 quilters. I loved having two days to lose myself in classes taught by Rayna Gillman, a nationally known quilt instructor who has written three books and specializes in improvisational quilting. These classes definitely took me out of my comfort zone and I learned a lot about color and value and the use of black and white fabrics. Southwest continued on page 15...

17 August - September 2018 WYOMING PATCHWORDS - Wyoming State Quilt Guild Newsletter Page 17...Southwest continued from page 13 The QW18 committee deserves a lot of credit for putting on such a great event. The national and regional instructors were great and their trunk shows were amazing. The quilt show had wonderful quilts and there was an impressive number of vendors. One of the best things was the food. The chef and his staff at CWCC outdid themselves and they will be a tough act to follow. The food was so good that I asked the chef to share his secrets regarding the pork loin roast and many other entrees. I am excited about representing the Southwest Region and intend to reach out to quilters and guilds outside of Sweetwater County. I hope they will also reach out to me at njames@wyoming.com so that I can share their activities in Wyoming Patchwords. I see this as an opportunity to make new friends and discover new ideas. We all tend to get into a rut and I know that my local guild struggles to provide new opportunities and activities to its members. I REGIONAL DIRECTORS already have ideas to share at our next meeting because of my contact with other quilters as I prepared this report. Finally, Ginny Hartman asked me to include this in my report: Nena James has been elected to the position for the next two years. I have enjoyed getting to meet so many of you in my two years as director, and will miss having a built-in excuse to attend regional quilting events. With Quilt Wyoming scheduled for Rock Springs in 2020, I felt that having a director who was located in Rock Springs would better facilitate the planning for this every-five-years event. Nena James is the codirector for Quilt Wyoming 2020, and is willing to serve as the Regional Director as well. I am looking forward to hearing from her through the Patchwords articles in the days ahead. Ginny Hartman Nena James

It is in the middle of Frontier Days here in Cheyenne. And the town is buzzing and so are the Cheyenne Heritage Quilters! The Laramie County Fair starts on Saturday August 5th and runs through August 12th. The Opportunity Quilt is displayed and tickets are sold. Also, many members and the community have a large showing in the quilting section of the Fair. Don't miss the CHQ (Cheyenne Heritage Quilters) Quilt Show August 16th 18th. We are honoring Sue Frerich as our Spotlight quilter. She will display her most recent quilts. We will hang over 100 quilts for the public to look at, including 27 Dresden Plate Challenge Quilts. This is Mari Harpold s Challenge Quilt. (3) We will have VENDORS for the first time in many years. Seven of them will be selling quilting supplies, fabric, and machines, plus giving demonstrations. (4) Don t miss the boutique. The boutique will be open for all three days. The Bake Sale will be open on Friday and Saturday. Location: First Methodist Church, 108 E. 18 th Street, Cheyenne. The Show opens Thursday from 3:00-8:00 p.m.; Friday 10:00a.m.-5:00 p.m. and Saturday 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Goshen County Quilters have been busy voting in new officers for Jennifer Lanier is President, Tracy Wilson is Vice President and Pat McCabe is Secretary. They have changed their meeting place to the Platte Valley REGIONAL DIRECTORS Bank on the first Saturday of each month. On July 16 these officers and others came to CHQ meeting and presented their Opportunity Quilt and shared a trunk show of some of the many quilts that were completed this year, individually or as group challenges. It was really fun seeing what other quilters in our own region are doing. September 13th 14th, 2018 is the yearly Goshen County Quilt Show held in Torrington. That is a fantastic quilt show. (See the events part of the Patchwords for place and times.) September 28th 30th is the Southeast Regional UFO Fall Retreat at LCCC. Please look forward to the invitation coming to you in the middle of August. Save the Date: On July 11-14, 2019 Quilt Wyoming will be presented in Cheyenne at LCCC. We will keep you posted, keep reading the Patchwords. Daenette More Calling all Quilters!! N.E.W. QUILT SHOW!!
