With 2009 being our guilds sixtieth year of existence. I m proud to know that I have been part of it for more than thirty years. I m trying to create a newsletter once again, it has taken myself way too long to get started again. I think it was writers block or just senior moments! Since my computer previous hard drive information that I build up over the years to help me out was lost, so was I without it.. Our issues need to cover multiple months of past info. just to attempt to catch up on things. Events have been happening within our guild members private lives which have affected others too. Some have lost love ones, or their jobs and more. We all feel deeply saddened over these events. Our members are friends and some are as close as family to each other. Like you all, I keep busy too trying to enjoy my life, I do not have enough time to get all things I want done. Times are tough right now for everyone, and some are doing better than others. It will get better soon for you I hope, as for myself I try to keep positive. Tough times don t last, tough people do. Some members have had birthdays pass which did not get a birthday . Happy Birthday to You! Sharing photos from our meetings, demo s and workshops could now be printed in color for our mailing list. More members have computers than before so our guild members keep up with the times. Find out more on what the guild is doing if you have Internet access. Some guild members and friends are active on face- book.com, photobucket.com and other guild or leather related sites like the IILG.org and leatherworker.net We will not meet this month in Rosemead, CA due to some of us going to Victorville for our guild s first time in the high desert city to do a demo. I have been there as a member of the Leather Artisan Guild of California for several years at this fair. This year I feel honored to get a day to show my fellow members around the huge display of leather entries. Letting our Leatherwork Shine in 2009! More on the fair in this issue.. 2 Volume 61 issue *5 Page 2 FEBRUARY Meeting A SWAP-MEET That month the workshop was an open session to work on your projects. We had a Christmas gift exchange and pot luck meal which was well attended in Dec. Then the January meeting is cancelled without much warning, our next meeting was to be in February at Standing Bears Trading Post. What, A Swap-meet at the meeting. I know not all members check the Myspace page for info., but the page is more up to date with a meeting info. blog. I think 2009 will be a good year for our guild, with more members getting involved in our organization it seems to be happening. A election to reconfirm our officers or a chance to allow others to be nominated should be happening. Some nice projects were being worked on each month, keep on carving them and have something to Show & Tell at the future guild meeting in June 14, 2009 at SBTP on the Second Sunday due to Fathers Day. Our meeting dates sometimes change so keep note of any which are sent by Sandi or myself. See you in June if not this month. Please bring in with you, or mail pictures or info on a project you wish to share with us. International Federation of Leather Guilds 2009 Show September 23, 24, 25, 26 & 27, 2009 Location: Clarion Hotel & Conference Center "Waterfront" While in our 60th year It would be nice to see more guild members interested in the 2009 Federation show to be held in Indiana. Each year the host guilds work hard to make these events happen, we should work hard at trying to be part of the event. If you can, attend one of these leather shows in the future! Any member who goes can be a representative for our guild as we are a member guild of the International Federation of Leather Guilds. You can start to prepare for this event now.. The show packets can be copied for you and mailed or given at a meeting. The guild can send a display of members work if they are willing to part with it for awhile. Keep Carving into the future! Be a part of this show and any other Leather event, you can enter your work into contest here and other Leather competitions. The IFoLG can have officers from many different guilds, a nomination form can be sent in for people to whom wish to be considered. We encourage members to send at least one item in for the show in September. We as a guild can be represented there if we have any Leathercraft from our members entered into this show. The Trade Show which takes place in Sheridan, WY is in May, The 8th World Leather Debut will be May 15, 16, 17, 2009 held at the Rocky Mountain Leather Trade Show, Holiday Inn Sheridan, Wyoming. That is this coming weekend! The next I.F.o. L. G. Show is being planned for Sept Will you make an effort to attend or enter by mail.

At our guild meetings at Standing Bears Trading Post and the Garvey Center we have the pleasure of having guest and members show their work. If you were there you could see the nice projects that members were working on. We did have a Swap-meet at our February 2009 meeting at SBTP, Leathercraft supplies, tools and more were ready to sell or trade with others there. Cool deals were made, if you had items to take down and someone else could use them, nice! Buyers got some nice items at fair prices. The Leathercraft Guild are sponsors at the 2009 San Bernardino County Fair. We will present the Best Of Show award in the Leather category. A talented leatherworker will be the recipient of a forty dollar check and ribbon from the fair. This county fair still knows what a county fair should be like. Share your Leatherwork there in 2009! We have even offered to demo there this year. Nine members to take a trip to the high desert area of Victorville, CA on May 17th. I don t always get enough pictures taken of all the members and guest leatherwork but try to have a few to share in the newsletter. More leather to share on another page, I will use some pictures of things I have made if I don t have some pictures that someone else sends me. At our meetings open workshops, some work on projects of all kinds. I sure see some great projects in progress as I walk the room to see who is working on what. More information needs to be collected so that we can tell you more about the maker and the project details. This month some may have display items and projects in progress while we attend the fair on our meeting date for May I was there for opening day, Saturday, May 9th and look forward to my return. If you have pictures, digital or prints to share of your Show & Tell items, please forward them to me so I can add them to an issue of the newsletter. Let others see what you have done in leather. You don t have to look good this year, you can find some Leathercraft items very easy. We even have out of town members traveling far just to share there time and talents.

5 Page 5 The LEATHERCRAT San Bernardino County Fair Victorville The San Bernardino County Fair is here! A good place to show your Leatherwork, especially in Our guild is to have a demo booth and a table display at this years edition. We get an opportunity to show and demonstrate how to do some forms of Leatherworking. Some members have entered their items in this fair, members from two California based Leathercrafters Guild s have made this a great display. Our demos are fun to do again and again, we are looking forward to another fun time in I just love to see all the fairs have Leatherwork on display in the competitions. You don t have to look good this year, you can find some Leathercraft items very easy. We even have out of town members traveling far just to share there time and talents. The competition you may think is nothing in comparison with the IFoLG annual shows which are tough to win a ribbon, the judges really know Leathercraft. We don t do it for the ribbons only, it gives us a chance to show what can be done with Leather. This display of entries is just the best that I have ever seen at a county fair. You should feel proud to be part of it. I sure am! The list of winners is not complete as of yet but there sure are many great leather items on display. I have to mention member Ann Newkold who has entered more items than any Leathercrafter I know in a competition. She entered fifteen total! The fair does not limit to one per class. Of course when the entries are multiple, not everyone can win a ribbon. There are some fine entries which did not get one but they will all be listed. The Leathercraft Guild will attend the fair on Sunday, May 17th so there will be no guild meeting. Congratulations on your winning Leatherwork, it is so good that you made the effort to participate in a guild function. And the newest recipient for the year 2008 is: When a member goes that extra mile to promote this guild and what it stands for, that is excellence beyond just being a member. She has helped this guild in so many ways! Now were on the web in more ways than one. The meetings are better with her and other members laughing and having fun! It was on December 18th, 1949, the newly formed Leathercraft Guild held its first open house Leathercraft exhibition at the Silverlake American Legion Auditorium. The feeling that prevailed was the good fellowship among Leathercrafters.
