Carl Schneider has agreed to turn the DVD over to Jean Talbott, who was unable to be at the demonstration. She will view the DVD and write an article covering Lee s demonstration. PBCW Members Win Awards at Witva Show Four members of the club entered work in the show at the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach sponsored by Women in the Visual Arts: Bill Jones, Brian Rosencrantz, Carl Schneider and Don Schwartz. There were 185 total works in three categories, 2D, 3D and jewelry. Of the 45 entries in 3D, Carl won First Place and Don an Honorable Mention. As pictured, Carl's work is a hollow form entitled Peacock while Don's is a stylized guitar. This should encourage other PBCW members to enter this show and others like it in the future. Congratulations to Carl and Don, and thanks to Women in the Visual Arts for this great show and for offering the opportunity for PBCW s members to participate. All four members who entered it should be proud of what they created this is a juried show and not all are accepted. The show runs from Oct. 31 to Nov. 24, so there is still time to see it and our members entries! Don handed out entries for this show at a meeting earlier this year and will do so again at the appropriate time so there will be another opportunity for members to participate.

2 Meeting Minutes for October 26, 2015 President Dan Lague called the meeting to order at 9:10 AM. demonstrated turning a Christmas ornament. Lee talked about Christmas ornament designs and showed several ornaments turned by himself and others. He then demonstrated turning a hand bell shaped ornament. After the demonstration the club took a 15 minute break and cleaned up the auditorium. Dan called the club back to order at 11:00 AM and began the business portion of the meeting. Bruce Williams announced that our next meeting would be held at the Nature Center on Saturday November 14. It will feature an all day demonstration by world-famous woodturner and artist Trent Bosch. The demonstration will begin at 9 AM and end at 4 PM with a thirty minute break for lunch. Admission to the demonstration will be forty dollars per person. Attendees can pay at the door or in advance by contacting Bruce. Be sure to bring a lunch or plan to make a quick trip to a local restaurant to pick up your lunch. The demonstration will be followed by two days of hands on workshops with Trent Bosch on November 15 and 16. As of the date of the October meeting there was one space left in the Sunday class and one or two available on Monday. Bruce will send out an with the tools and supplies needed for the demonstration and for the hands on classes. The November meeting will also feature a short business meeting, before the demonstration begins, for the purpose of electing club officers and board members for Carl Schneider announced a tentative slate at the October meeting. Look for the final version in the November newsletter. The December meeting, to be held 12/19, will feature a demonstration of work holding techniques. One of the challenges woodturners face is determining the best way to hold objects on the lathe while they re being turned. This demonstration will feature many different ways of doing this while focusing on which is best for a particular job. The December meeting will also feature a brown bag gift exchange. Everyone who brings a gift to the meeting will receive a ticket. The tickets will be drawn to determine the order in which participants may claim a gift from those brought to the meeting. Gifts may be exchanged once after all have been claimed. The February meeting will feature an all day demonstration by Glen Lucas from Ireland. More details will be available as the date approaches. Glen will also teach hands on classes for a limited number of students. Gerhard Schewnke announced that the Club s Fall Show and Sale will be held the first weekend in November at Mounts Botanical Garden on Military Trail in West Palm Beach. Treasurer Bruce Williams informed the club that the general fund stands at $ The education fund holds $ The major expense for the last month was for the Mounts show. Bruce also stated that he has begun collecting membership dues for the 2016 calendar year. Our club welcomed Cameron Rowe, a guest from the Gold Coast Woodturners. The winner of this month s 50/50 raffle was Loren Wolfe and this month s bring back raffle winner was Brian Rosencrantz. The October gallery featured the collaborative efforts of many of the club s turners. The response to the event was great and each of the turners who brought their collaborations to the meeting received a gift certificate from Craft Supply.

3 Collaboration Projects The October meeting was the due date for the collaborative projects., and what a variety of projects there were, everything from the gorgeous to the bizarre! 5 Palm Beach County Woodturners Collaboration Projects Grapefruit Vase Wayne Veit, Carl Schneider Wood, Dye Steve Hlasnicek, Dan Lague Tools, Tips and Techniques: Chucking How to chuck a natural edge bowl blank with a screw chuck as taught by Dave Barriger in his Green Woodturning class at the John C Campbell Folk School. 1. Center a plywood circle template of the appropriate size over the bark side of the blank and fasten it down into the wood with a wood screw. 2. Cut around the plywood template with a bandsaw so that you now have a round bowl blank. Remove the wood screw. 3. With a drill press and a 2-1/2 Forstner bit centered on the screw hole from the previous steps, remove the bark and go far enough down into the wood so that you have a flat, clean surface for mounting. 4. Drill the proper size hole for your screw chuck, centering it on the area drilled out in step 3. The Forstner bit will leave a notch in the center you can use as a guide. 5. Mount the bowl blank on the lathe as you would any bowl blank mounted with a screw chuck. Note: This is Dave s method. You may or may not agree with it, but all of us had success with it in his class.

Name Address, City, State and ZIP Code Telephone Woodturning Scholarships Available Anyone interested in receiving financial assistance from the PBCW to attend a recognized woodturning course may apply for a grant in the amount of $250 or $500 to assist with expenses. To apply for a grant simply complete a grant application and give it to a member of the education committee. The education committee members are: Bill Jones, Brian Rosencrantz and Al Gruntwagin. In return for the aid the scholarship winner must agree to provide one or two demonstrations for the club at regular meetings during the year following attendance at the course. Eligibility for the scholarships will be judged by the club s education committee.
