October-November 2018 WYOMING PATCHWORDS - Wyoming State Quilt Guild Newsletter Page 3 NORTHWEST Michelle Quick Greeting Quilters! the Paintbrush Piecers and TAGY just finished packing up the Yellowstone Quilt Fest for another year. We hung over 180 quilts and the Cody Auditorium was ablaze with color and pattern and quilting chatter! The QW 2019 Opportunity quilt received many compliments, and one odd comment from an out-of-state visitor Do people here decorate with cowboy boots? Having several friends with log homes who do decorate with western theme and boots, I thought that was pretty humorous! REGIONAL DIRECTORS Barbara Graham won two People s Choice blue ribbons for her Lorelei and Flowers. Michelle Yunger won the Purple Cow Youth award for her ZigZag - a class she took at QW 2018! Also shown is her mom Barb Bunn s ZigZag. Kudos for finishing a class project so quickly and so beautifully. Also huge thanks to new YQF Chair Barbara Pike for pulling this lovely show together. As we all know, many hands, hearts and backs are needed to hang a quilt show! With great sadness, we relay the news that longtime quilting friend Anne Hill passed away last month. She will be missed. The NW region is all about retreats this fall: Thermopolis is having a retreat September Hyattville has theirs September Friends & Company is having their retreat October with the first day being an embroidery class with Mary Lou Moon. The Quick Quilt Retreat is October Both of these Cody retreats are full. Apparently quilters in this region have high hopes of finishing projects! Friends & Company is having a big longarm machine quilting event September Contact the shop for more info Paintbrush Piecers Quilt Guild in Cody/Meteetsee/Powell continue to be actively making quilts for veterans and also for local police cars. Happy quilting! Michelle Quick

October-November 2018 WYOMING PATCHWORDS - Wyoming State Quilt Guild Newsletter Page 5 SOUTHWEST Nena James Fall is here and the holidays are not far behind. As I prepare my yard for winter, I find my interest shifting to quilting which is often neglected during the summer months. Although I would love to begin a new project, I am exercising some self control and prioritizing unfinished projects in the hope that I can then justify starting a new project at the beginning of the new year. REGIONAL DIRECTORS Evanston in late August. The quilt show was part of the 21st Anniversary Roundhouse Festival. Chris Shilcox placed first in the people s choice and favorite fabric categories and Bonnie Wright s quilt won the favorite quilting division. After visiting with the ladies at Common Threads in Evanston, I stopped at the Valley Fabric Store in Urie and learned about many quilting events planned by its staff. Because September is National Jelly Roll Month, the store has scheduled Fall Frenzy and National Sew a Jelly Roll Day in mid September with several jelly roll projects showcased. Kids in the Southwest Region are lucky to have quilt programs dedicated to their age group. The Valley Fabric Shop continues to teach classes for kids on a weekly basis. In early September, quilters in the Big Piney area enjoyed the annual Sublette Center Quilt Show with at least thirty quilts by local quilters on display. Quilts ranged from traditional to modern, hand pieced to machine pieced. Forty-five quilts were displayed at the quilt show at the Roundhouse in Southwest continued on page 7...

October-November 2018 WYOMING PATCHWORDS - Wyoming State Quilt Guild Newsletter Page 7...Southwest continued from page 5 Here in Rock Springs, Pam Wiggen spearheads the summer BOCES quilting program for kids aged 8 to 14, during which each student completes a quilt. Two of those quilts were entered in the Sweetwater County Fair; one quilt placed second and the other quilt received a ribbon for grand champion. One quilt went on to the Wyoming State Fair and was awarded a first place ribbon. Sweetwater Piecemakers, the Rock Springs quilt guild, had its annual ice cream social in late August. That is my favorite meeting of the year. In addition to the ice cream treats, quilters shared their recently completed quilt projects and discussed the club challenge. On October 5th and 6th, the 2018 Hunters Widow Quilt Retreat will take place at Homewood Suites in Rock Springs. The theme this year is Scrap-Happy Weekend. Marla Marx of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, is the featured instructor and will be teaching a class entitled Fractures. She will also be demonstrating a few technique mini-workshops demonstrating the use of different rulers. Marla was the instructor at last year s retreat and everyone is delighted to have her return. The Hunters Widow Quilt Retreat is sponsored by the Wyoming State Quilt Guild. The Crazy Ladies Quilt Guild in Pinedale is again sponsoring its annual quilt retreat, Quilting in the Winds, from October 19-21, in Pinedale. Susan Wells will be teaching a mystery REGIONAL DIRECTORS quilt named Nature s Symphony and fabric collage classes will be taught by Tessa Miller and Ginny Rossow. Susan Garrity will teach two classes, Whirligigs and Let s Embellish. Last, but not least, Deb Schultz is teaching a class titled Take A Seat in which students learn to re-cover a standard folding chair with an artistic quilted seat cover. I was fortunate to attend Quilting in the Winds last October and spent two days exploring my artistic side with Barbara Olson, a national quilt instructor. Guild members really work hard to make Quilting in the Winds a great event. I am sorry I will not be able to attend this year but will include pictures of the event in my next report. Deb Shultz updated me on activities of the Jackson quilt guild. Its annual winter challenge this year is to make a 24 x 24 quilt inspired by a song, using only fabric in the quilter s stash. The challenge quilts will be unveiled at the May 2019 meeting. This is a very popular guild activity with more than thirty quilts unveiled this May for last year s challenge. Thanks to everyone I reached out to who provided me with information for this column. I appreciate your help. I want my articles to encompass all of the Southwest Region so I hope everyone with any information will reach out to me by texting or ing me at njames@wyoming.com. Nena James

October-November 2018 WYOMING PATCHWORDS - Wyoming State Quilt Guild Newsletter Page 9 CENTRAL Julie Haptonstall Hello fellow quilters! I am taking a break from sewing on projects that I worked on at the Quilt Rendezvous in Riverton! There were 35 quilters. There were so many beautiful projects, wonderful food and laughter! Jennifer Golden held a mystery class. We created some very beautiful and useful drawstring bags. She also had a bonus class. We made a hum bug bag. This was a big review for some of us on how to sew in a zipper. Judy Powell's Vintage Rose king-size quilt (pattern by Judy Neimeyer) was chosen to go to the Paducah Quilt Show. There were 22 entries in that category. People's choice voting was September She was the only one to enter from Wyoming. Good luck Judy! make a quilt for another veteran. Stephanie Logan, State Coordinator for the QOV. Stephanie awarded a quilt to Deb Zelenak for her service in the United States Air Force. Thank you Deb for your service! We had fun making a disappearing hourglass block to Stitches N Time Douglas Stitches N Time quilters met in August and September on the first Saturday at the Douglas Baptist Church on Pearson REGIONAL DIRECTORS Drive. In August they worked on Art Quilts by using scraps of colorful fabric. Sonia had them check out Pinterest for ideas and then they went to work. Deanna Lindeman did a southwestern scene with cactus and her little black cat in the left-hand corner. She has been taking her cat to Arizona for the winter, but has decided to leave her in Douglas with her son this winter. She will have a special picture of her kitty from the wall hanging that she made. In September all 16 of the quilters made Jelly Roll Race Quilts. It seems that since fall has unofficially begun they are ready to buckle down to try something new. In October they plan on working on a Bear Paw Table Runner using fall fabrics. In November they will work on a new technique to make square fabric boxes. 'Sounds like some fun ahead! Pictured is Anna Cobb s quilt. Glendo EWC Quilting Group The Glendo EWC Quilting have been meeting every Thursday this summer at the Glendo Town Hall. In August they worked on the Curvalicious Tote Bag. Hannah Wilde did the one shown in the picture. In September the group will be working on the Jelly Roll Race for charity. Lickety Stitch Quilts - Lusk Wyoming Quilt Shop Hop 2018 ended on September 4th. Winners have been drawn and prizes sent out. Lickety Stitch Quilts had a Barn Quilt Block Painting classes in Thermopolis, Riverton, Casper, Laramie and Dubois this summer. Central continued on page 11...

October-November 2018 WYOMING PATCHWORDS - Wyoming State Quilt Guild Newsletter Page 11...Central continued from page 9 REGIONAL DIRECTORS ADVENTURE" where they meet to make a quilt. On Saturday September 16th, they met and made Missouri Star Quilt Co.'s "Illusion" quilt. The Dubois quilt show went very well with good attendance, good vendors, good sales and the raffle quilt was won by a local woman who just lost her son this spring to cancer. How appropriate to now be surrounded by "Circle of Friends". She burst into tears when she learned that her name had been drawn! They ve already chosen the pattern for next year's quilt and purchased most of the fabric from our show vendors (which they like to do!). They assured me that there will be quite a large contingent of quilters from Dubois who will be attending the Quick Retreat in Cody in October! Prism Quilt and Sew - Casper Prism in Casper offers their downstairs facilities for "Open Sew" on Mondays and most Tuesdays from 10:30 to 4:30. This is where you can get together with other sewers and get your projects done. No host, no cost, just bring it on in and "Git 'her done". On the first and third Thursdays from 1:00 to 3:00, they have a hand applique group that meets. This is also open to the public and the gals are always happy to share their techniques. This group does some amazingly beautiful work. It's always a bonus to learn something new from someone who really knows what they're doing (at no cost to you!) The Popo Agie Quilters annual show was September in Lander. This year s proceeds went to the Fremont County Youth Camp. The Popo Agie Quilters will also be hosting a quilt retreat October 19-21; cost is $55 for nonmembers. Retreat information is available from Betsy Thurlo, Mary Koenig reported, that in September the Laramie Art Quilters' show was held at the ArtConnect Gallery in Laramie. It ran through the month of September. The opening reception was Friday, September 7. The Prairie Stitcher has fall classes starting which include kid's classes, beginning and intermediate quilt making, Christmas Tree wall hanging and more. The Prairie Stitcher will be participating in the Douglas Holiday Open House on Friday and Saturday, November 16th and 17th. It is a great time to get Christmas shopping done or get started on Christmas gifts you plan to make. It is just a fun time. Many things take place around town. There is usually a Chili Cook-off and a Christmas Cookie Baking Contest, among other events. Plan to attend. Blakeman Vacuum and Sewing has an amazing amount of classes that they are offering in Casper from learning how to sew on the long arm to making tote bags to an embroidery party. Check out their class schedules at, blakemansewvac.com/sewing-classes. Wow, with so much going on around us and the weather turning toward indoor activities, it seems to me like it's a great time to catch up on those projects that we have been putting off. Happy Quilting. Julie Haptonstall On the third Tuesday of the month, there is Block of the Month "Conestoga Crossing" they meet to discuss their blocks. They get together for goodies and to learn more about what it was like for women to cross the prairies. They have learned so very much about the hardship that women endured that it makes us truly appreciate our modern day conveniences. 405 Canal Street, Suite Rapid City, SD They are starting up a "Third Saturday QUILT

Cold weather is supposed to be here but in Cheyenne we are still in the 80 s. It s hard to begin hunkering down and thinking about Christmas, and not using the excuse that It s Summer, too hot to quilt! I must tell you one of the successes of this summer was the Cheyenne Heritage Quilt Show held August 16-18, It was the best quilt show that we have put on so far!! Sue Frerich was our Featured Quilter. One of her quilts was awarded Best of Show! Our vendors were very successful and we had a great boutique. The pictured quilt received First Place from the category Dresdens made and quilted by Carol Gardner. There were 13 entries from this category that began in 2017 as a 10-month challenge. The best thing about the show was how everyone chipped in. It wasn t a burden on the few. The community gave great support as well. By the time you read this the Goshen County Quilt Show held in Torrington will be over. There are several carloads of quilters going to the show September th from Cheyenne, including me. You ll have to wait til next time to hear all the brave reviews. Better yet, I hope you went! REGIONAL DIRECTORS Fall Retreat at LCCC. Fifty-four lucky quilters are in for a very fun and productive time with their UFO s. Thanks to WSQG sponsorship, Jennifer Golden will teach us all about Keyboard Kaleidoscope. 'Should have some great pictures next time.
