4 G a r a g e B a n d D c u m e n t a t i n P a g e 3 Getting Started When clicking n the GarageBand icn, the new interface n default pens up the last prject GarageBand had wrked n. Fr the mst part yu cannt really change this, unless yu make anther blank prject and use it as a template (mre murrayewing.c.uk/gmgb/article_17.php). In any case (since this is a public cmputer!), clse the prject that was up n default (save it as the date it is) and yu shuld pen up t a new Getting Started - esqe windw. In this windw, there are quite a few ptins n the left side that are segmented int different parts: 1. New Prject: This is where yu start making music. We ll get t this in much greater detail belw. 2. Learn t Play: Here, yu can find prgram that is linked t intrductin vides n hw t play an instrument and sing, but mst f the cntent is lcked as a paid add n. 3. Lessn Stre: This is where yu buy all the lessns. 4. Recent: Lk here if yu need t g back t where yu were last n, in terms f recrding a prject. In this dcumentatin, we will largely fcus upn New Prject and Recent, assuming yu are here n the intent f slidifying yur amazing musical ideas! And als these are free t, as the ther ptins Learn t Play and Lessn Stre require in- app purchases.

5 G a r a g e B a n d D c u m e n t a t i n P a g e 4 New Prject: In this menu, yu can start n yur musical masterpiece. All the icns f instruments represent certain presets that GarageBand has fr yu. Clicking ne f them and starting a prject n ne f these presets, there will be several tracks already laid ut fr yu t try in whichever instrument preset yu chse. Als it shuld be mentined that fr the Ringtne preset, this will lay ut lps that were already made n frm sme Apple musicians, and fr the Empty Prject preset, well wn t be any f thse tracks t lay n. Furthermre n the bttm f the windw, yu will see several ptins that regard t the musical identity fr the new prject. Dn t wrry abut messing arund with any f this! Yu can change these in yur prject, s nthing is set in stne yet (yu can find the time signature, temp, and key signature all at the tp yur new prject). These values are, yes, the mre musically- technical values, and what are they ding here if recrding music isn t much abut the thery, but the feeeeel? Well fr ne, Garageband has an ptin fr the Sftware instruments that yu r a midi machine prgrams, that yu can see a musical scre printut f that particular track. Als fr the time signature, this is used fr the playback, recrding, and metrnme f the recrding piece.

6 G a r a g e B a n d D c u m e n t a t i n P a g e 5 Oh, there is ne technical- technical line, the last line. This shuld be set t (n this cmputer at least): If nt set t this, then beware! The prgram wn t be able t hear yur input r utput within the prject until yu fiddle arund with this again (if yu re nt getting any sund playing thrugh the speakers r the cmputer isn t reading yur instrument sunds, g t the tp navigatin bar, Garageband>Preferences>Audi/MIDI) If yu dn t hear anything, but have everything plugged in right n yur Mac, yu shuld lk int messing arund with these inputs/utputs ptins.

Sme User- Interface Intrductins: Let s start by pinting t what s what in this nice recrding interface that we have here. TrackBard: where all the tracks shw and where t plan yur masterpiece, by mving, cutting, lping, etc T the left f the tp f GarageBand (right belw the x windw buttn) yu will see fur gray buttns, Library, Help, Bttm Cntrl Panel, and Track Editr. Each f these buttns will shw/hide panels. Next (t the right), yu can see several different buttns that yu re familiar with: the rewind, frward, stp, play, and recrd, all respectively. Several buttns will change nce yu mve the track cursr (the big lng

8 GarageBand Dcumentatin Page 7 vertical line that spans acrss the vast empty black space) where the stp will turn int a rewind t beginning and then if yu play/recrd the track (use space bar t pause and play and r t recrd), the play/recrd buttn will light up, indicating that the track is playing/recrding. On t the right f it r in the middle, there s a black bx with blue characters, where the panel will shw yu sme f the prject s prperties. Mentined befre, yu can change the time/key signature, the beats per minute f the prject and even change the cunts frm musical measures t actual time. We ll get mre int Lper later. Furthest right, there are fur buttns which are Lper, Tuner, Cunt in, and Metrnme. As fr tuner, this tuner is a chrmatic tuner that reads frm the instrument cable and nt a micrphne f any srts. Fr cunt- in, this feature basically puts a cunt right befre (r whatever is befre in the track) yu start t recrd, s if nt pressed and when yu hit recrd, Garageband will instantaneusly recrd. Metrnme is a cunt that plays while n playback r recrd that helps yu keep track f timing. Library: On the left mst utward panel f GarageBand, there is the Library, which is a library f different presets that GarageBand has already put depending upn what track yu are set in. If yu want t hide this, click n the tp stripe f it where it says Library and t pen it up click any pen gray space n the track. Yu can als just click the Library buttn t hide/shw this panel. Als knw that yu re nt nly limited t these presets as well! These presets are just as custmizable, s fr instance if yu want sme fuzz int the Cl Jazz Cmb Preset, Quick Help: Clicking n this, there will be a small black

Hvering ver anything GarageBand with the cursr will shw a little synpsis f that the hvered item is. Bttm Cntrl Panel: Inf: This will bring a left panel n the Cntrl Panel that will let yu custmize the keybard sensitivity f what buttns yu input and als Audi Units that let yu add instruments and gear that might smetimes need a little mre custmizatin t their prcessing. Master: This will set the levels f pitch and tne fr yur whle entire prject fr whatever f the tp f the Bttm Cntrl Panel ffers. Cmpare: This will allw yu t see what the difference is between different custmizatins. Pressing the Cmpare buttn yu can start editing the different utputs yu want t hear and then clicking the Cmpare again will allw fr the riginal edit t cme back. Cntrls: Varies fr what yu type f track yu are in, but essentially allws yu t edit the tne and pitch with knbs n different sectins. EQ: Changes the pitch and tnal quality f the track/piece, but in a mre graphical sense. Mre n this later. Track Editr: In this windw (the same place where yu find the Bttm Cntrl Panel) yu will get t see that there are mre ptins t just cutting and mving tracks, where yu can edit pitch, r even timing n the track. Als this windw allws the user t see the very details f the track that the user cannt nrmally see n the TrackBard.

10 G a r a g e B a n d D c u m e n t a t i n P a g e 9 Parts f the Track: Number: This feature yu will nt see unless yu are recrding in takes, in anther tpic later we further delve int (Lk at the sectin lps). The number represents what take that is n the track, and yu can even press n it fr different takes t! Track Name: The track name; yu can als change the name f it by duble clicking n the name. Pitch Graph/Matrix Dts: A helpful graph that shws the intensity f the track, where if a certain part is small it s much quieter in intensity and if it s very large, then very lud in terms f intensity. This graph can be further custmized, in a later tpic cvered in this dcumentatin called Flex Time. Fr the dts, these are fund n Sftware Instruments that shw the inputs. The clr f the tracks are als varied t. Here s sme: Red: Anytime when yu are recrding, the track will turn red as the track mves. Once it stps it will turn int several different clrs depending upn what the clr f the track is. Purple: Guitar and Bass track. Green: Sftware Instrument. GarageBand Drummer. Blue: Micrphne. General Muse Cursrs: Regular cursr: Standard cursr; mve, drp, click things. Cutter/Extender: The cursr shuld be fund when hvering ver the edges f the bttm half f the track. In this cursr yu can cut r extend the size f the track. Lper: This cursr is fund when hvering n the tp half f a track, n the trackbard. This will allw yu t extend the track by lps, meaning the current track yu have placed dwn will lp if yu use this cursr t push it ut.

Click n the plus buttn fund right abve the pian track t add a new track. Tracks Sftware instrument: Fr these set f instruments, they are instruments prgrammable thrugh sme external sftware based instrument such as a keybard r a drum kit that has MIDI plugs, r yur muse and keybard that is lsely called the Music Matrix: Music Matrix (big thanks t Jhn Risinger)

12 GarageBand Dcumentatin Page 11 This functin allws yu t use the custm input ntes withut using sftware instruments. The advantages f using this tl than rather than using a keybard is t prgram meldies that yur dexterity wuldn t allw yu t d n a keybard. tldr; draw in ntes (any sftware instrument) withut using the keybard r pian, but the muse! Hw t use: 1. G t the sftware instrument 2. Then hld cmmand n the track and a green bx shuld pp up 3. Duble click n the green bx and n the bttm f the screen a clse up view shuld pp up 4. In this windw, hld cmmand and then pint with the muse t draw ut the different ntes Musical Scre: Yes! Fr the mre musically technical peple, yu can just write (prgram really) yur sftware piece in musical- thery- nte- terms- thingy by hitting Scre n the tp middle f the bttm sectin- windw f the GarageBand windw. On the left f the bttm sectin windw, yu ll be able t see all the nte values and specificatins. Use the cmmand buttn again nt the scre t draw in yur musical thery- ness. When yu draw the ntes smaller and clser tgether yu can trill the ntes s that it wuld sund a lt faster. Als when yu use the velcity meter n t the left that measures the velcity at which yu wuld hit a nte, bit nt hw fast a nte sund. S fr example when yu hit a tm drum, if the velcity is fast the tm drum will sund much sharp because the velcity f when yu hit the drum is very fast. Audi Instrument: This ptin is actually split int tw different categries, micrphne and guitar and bass. On the guitar and bass ptin, there are ptins t edit yur sund with a varied amunt f amps and effect pedals that are mre suited fr thse instruments. On the ther hand with micrphnes, it s much mre f a raw effect- less preset t recrd. If yu want t experiment, it s kay t put yur vice thrugh the guitar and bass ptin r the vice versa, by either clicking the wrng r changing the effects n the Library panel that is fund n the left side f GarageBand. In this ptin the input wires can be either f an instrument r a headphne cable hked int an interface. Micrphne: As explained earlier there are a cuple f stripped dwn effects t chse frm when recrding a vice. When clicking the blue audi icn n the track panel, there are sme cntrls and EQ s at yur dispsal t mess arund with.

13 GarageBand Dcumentatin Page 12 Guitar & Bass: Fr this ptin there s a cuple f set upn the Library panel that are pretty varied. Yu can even enhance these even mre with pedals and different amps that Apple has tried t replicate n real life gear. Where is all the guitar gear at? Drummer: In the new GarageBand they made it a little harder t find where all the amps and effect pedal custmizatins are at, s here s the dcumentatin t help yu! 1. Pull up the Bttm Track Cntrl Panel by duble clicking the track icn r the picture in the track. 2. Next if yu lk t the very tp right f the Bttm Track Cntrl Panel yu will see tw small bxes, ne being the amp and the ther being the pedal bard. Bth ptins will pull up anther smaller windw. 3. Nw nte! These ptins are nly available t the Electric Guitar and Bass ptins in the library. These are nt available n the vcals r acustic guitar settings. 4. Play arund nw! Althugh there s sme ptins fr the amp withut clicking n the amp buttn n the right side, these are nly fr the preset amp and dn t have much cntrl as the amps windws. 5. 14 GarageBand Dcumentatin Page 13 Opening up a new instrument, there will be a drummer ptin all the way t the right. Clicking this ptin allws yu t insert a prgrammable drummer int yur music piece, withut the need t learn hw t cunt rhythm r time. Hw t use: 1. Click n the plus buttn t add a new instrument track and click drummer. 2. Duble click n ne f the yellw bars t have a bttm menu shw up, here are the different ptins t custmize yur drum track. 3. The parts f the bttm drummer menu: (frm left t right) a. Drummer prfile: This allws yu t give yu drum track a distinct persnality by rendering the type f kit and the type f genre by subdividing it int different peple. b. Presets: These will custmize the matrix (ver t the right) t a distinct sund that Apple has already custmized fr yu. c. Drummer Matrix: This will allw yu t gain much mre freedm with the sund f the drumming by mving a marker amngst its range. Adding mre vertical mvement will determines it s ludness and use f crashing n the drums and such, and mving it hrizntally will allw yu t custmize the cmplexity f the beat, adding mre beats and such. d. Grayed ut Drum kit: This will allw yu t cnfigure an influence f a certain drum percussin piece in the drum track. e. Fllw bx: Right near Kick and Snare, this will allw the drum track t fllw a particular track, which is DIFFERENT than GROOVE TRACK because this will fllw nly a particular track, NOT the whle prject will fllw a particular track. f. Fill and Swing Dials: these will allw yu t add mre fills (small drum sls in between measures) and swing (give a dancier feel t the track, rather than a nrmal drum track will nly keep a beat).

15 GarageBand Dcumentatin Page 14 Recrding & Playback Mnitr Apple des nt yur mnitr as in yur display! This is the term they used t determine whether r nt yu will get sund cming ut f yur utputs when yu recrd r just when yu have the interface pen at all, unless if yu are n playback. T turn n this feature g t the track yu are n and click the wifi- lking r three wave buttn. It will tggle n as range if Mnitr is n, and be grayed ut if nt! Lping This feature in GarageBand will allw yu t playback any sectin f time/measure f yur chice. This is super helpful when yu are sling n ne particular backtrack and yu need t d the sl in several different takes. 1. T start this ff yu can either click the Lper buttn fund n the tp right, right f the black bx, the first buttn f the 4 set (the ne that lks like the lp) r g t the ruler n the TrackBard and highlight whichever part yu want t lp 2. If yu pressed n the Lper buttn, n default a yellw bar shuld appear where n the TrackBard ruler and shuld highlight 4 measures. Of curse this is mvable! 3. Nw hit play r recrd and it will lp that highlighted sectin! When yu recrd, it will recrd n takes if yu are recrding n different track than the ne n playback and cunt in takes a. Helpful tip! If yu keep lping n and rip int a sl ver multiple lps, just cpy that ne take ver and ver again and click n the number, and have it set that cntinuusly (i.e. if yu re masterpiece f a sl is starting n the 4 th take and yu ripped the sl all the way t the 7 th lp, just cpy recrded sl track 3 mre times and set the numbers n the track each t 5, 6, 7 n the cpied tracks.)

16 GarageBand Dcumentatin Page 15 Editing yur Recrd Rhythmic Edits Grve Track A rhythmic functin in Garageband that centralizes all tracks f a prject t ne track. S let s say fr instance that all f yur tracks are mismatched in a 4/4 time, like yur guitar is playing at a ¾ time signature while yur bass is playing at a 6/8 and the nly thing playing n a 4/4 is yur drums. Well since the drums are n the right time signature, just use the grve track feature n the drum track, and all f the ther tracks in the ther time signatures are played at the steady 4/4 tl;dr. if yu have a guitar, bass, and drums and yur drums are the nly ne that plays the crrect rhythm that yu want in yur prject, set the drum track t yur grve time, and the guitar and bass fixes themselves int the same temp as the drums. Hw t access (Grve Track is usually never set t default t shw it s this is required t use this feature): 1. G t the Track n the tp f the GarageBand Taskbar 2. Then scrll all the way t Track Header 3. Pan ver it t shw mre f the ptins and click Shw Grve Time 4. Nw pan ver t the left f a track picture (this track has t have smething recrded r made in there) and there shuld be a star; clicking that will centralize that track t yur Grve Track. Flex Time In GarageBand yu can pull up a similar windw t the Music matrix t prgram a real instrument. In this editr it allws yu t maneuver where sme f these sunds mve. This is helpful when yu have mistimed tracks that yu really like, but yu dn t remember hw t play it. Instead f rerecrding the track and spending hurs t figure ut hw t play it again, in this editr yu can reprgram t skew the meldy t reprgram the timing f the nte. Unlike the Grve Track, this allws yu t skew the specific track, s if yu are experimenting with different time signatures n tp f ther time signatures, this allws yu t skew a certain track t a different time signature.

Duble click n a track with a sinsudual wave n it (the squiggly lines that represents the sund waves n an instrument track)and a bttm menu shuld cme up 2. On the bttm menu, left hand side, click the sideways hur glass lking buttn (very small buttn) and wait. Depending hw much is ging n in that particular track, meaning hw many waves there are and such, yu might need t wait a little lnger if it is a very large and r detailed track, s that GarageBand can divide up all the parts (in many cases ntes) in the track. 3. After waiting, vertical lines shuld appear n the track. When the cursr transfrms int three pillars when hvering ver a vertical line. This will nw allw yu t extend the part r shrten it t yur desire. Pitch and Tne Edits EQ (equalizer) In this panel f settings yu can edit the pitch and tne f a track t have mre pitch, bass, mids, etc BUT the mst imprtant feature the EQ brings is manual filtering f unwanted nises like feedback, ech, and breathing in tracks by editing the levels f sme f pitch and tne. Hw t use: 1. Bring up the Bttm Cntrl Panel fr a given track by clicking n the track icn picture, r bring up the Bttm Cntrl Panel fr the whle track by clicking n its respective buttn () n the tp left. 2. Nw yu shuld see the EQ ptin n the tp middle f the Bttm Cntrl Panel. 3. Depending n what yu want t accmplish, i.e. filtering, pitch adjustments, etc use different dts n the graph t adjust what yu are lking fr. a. Fr example, minimizing a feedback in the guitar track, yu wuld prbably need t minimize the right side s pitch t be under the equilibrium bar. b. Fr breathing and echs yu might want t lk int turning the EQ graph s pitch t be higher in tne, etc Anntatins In shrt, this interface allws yu t cntrl when yu can specifically turn n certain effects and tnes f a given track. Fr example, when using the pedal bard there are smetimes within a sl that a given time, yu wuld want t switch ff the effect withut cutting the track r creating a new track all tgether. Anntatins are described in a line graph f when t nt nly turn the pedal n r ff, but can be used t cntrl vlume, tne, pan, etc Hw t use: 1. Lking t the list f tracks, n tp right there shuld be tw buttns, click the ne that lks like a line graph. 2. Clicking this ptin, the tracks n the TrackBard shuld get nticeably larger with light lines acrss the track.

18 GarageBand Dcumentatin Page Clicking anywhere alng the lines yu shuld be able t change the height f them with dts. On default the line will represent Vlume. If yu g t the track icn, yu shuld be able t see a drp dwn bx that says Vlume and yu can switch it t effects r pan. a. Nte that n sme f the ptins it will be a mre n r ff (the dts can be placed n nly the extremes r tp r bttm f the Anntatins chart) than fine tune like yu see with vlume and all the dts all acrss the track. Imprting/Exprting If yu are imprting files then, yu are bringing files int yur prject like ther sngs r lps, which are very useful fr sampling music. When yu are exprting, this will be the last thing yu d when yu are finished with the prject r testing yur prject ut; taking yur prject and frmatting it int a file extensin like mp3. Imprting: 1. G t the tp taskbar f the display and g t file 2. Then click Imprt 3. Lcate the files that yu want t put int yur piece and yu re dne! Exprting: 1. G t the tp taskbar f the display and g t File 2. Then yu will see a varied amunt f ptins. Depending upn where yu want t have yur file lcated at, click ne f the fllwing ptins (nte that when yu d click Exprt t Disc, this in fact means it will exprt it t yur HDD, nt an actual disk). 3. Yu can als chse what quality yu wuld like t put yur piece at (higher the quality, larger the file, vice- versa) 4. Als yu can save yur piece in a varied amunt f extensins, but the mst standard is mp3.
