Understanding Plrhthms The grves taught in this lessn are a great wa t expand n the cnventinal ideas f drumming, and f changing the flw f a sng. Plaing straight is great, but when Schreder is in the prcess f creating music, especiall when ding s fr an album, he lks at what he hasn t alread dne in that album, s he can explre thse pssibilities instead f ding the same thing that he has alread dne. Befre prceeding let s take a lk at what is an actual plrhthm. A plrhthm is a rhthm in which tw r mre different meters are plaed simultaneusl, while bth are mving at the same linear temp. A simple example f this is plaing a 4/4 time pattern, where quarter ntes are plaed n the bass drum while half-nte triplets are plaed n the hi-hat. At the beginning f the secnd measure the ntes n the hi-hat and the bass drum will cincide nce again. This example u have just seen is called a 3-ver-4 r 3:4 plrhthm. This 3-ver-4 is actuall just a frmula fr understanding hw t build this particular plrhthm. T pla a X-ver-Y plrhthm, divide the Y beats in grups f X ntes, and pla ever Y th nte. Understanding hw this frmula wrks will give u a further knwledge n hw t distinguish and apprach ther plrhthms; s let s use the 3-ver-4 example as a wa t explain this frmula. 5

6 Lessn #18 Plrhthm Drum Beat Ideas Step 1 The first thing u have t realie is that the X-ver-Y frmula tells us exactl in hw man beats this plrhthm will have t be plaed. S fr this u take Y, and use it as the number f beats ver which u will pla the plrhthm. Since n a 3-ver-4 we have, Y = 4, then this plrhthm will have t be plaed ver fur beats. In this example, which is the ne shwed b Schreder n the lessn, he plas the fur beats n the bass drum, but u can pla them wherever u want n ur drum set. Step 2 We have seen what the Y n X-ver-Y means; the X n the ther hand, let s knw exactl in hw man ntes we will have t divide each beat. Thus, because X is 3 in this case, each beat will be subdivided int three ntes, i.e., 8 th nte triplets. Step 3 Fr the final step u just have t take the Y nce again, and pla each Y th nte f the subdivided ntes. In this case this means each 4 th nte. Yu can add extra ntes, dnamics, extra vices, split the plrhthm between a different set f vices; the sk is the limit. There is ne last rule u have t keep in mind while plaing arund with these ideas. Generall, tw rhthms are nl cnsidered a plrhthm if the have n cmmn divisr, ther than ne. In the example abve, there is n whle number (ther than ne) that will divide evenl int bth 3 and 4. Hence, things like fr instance 4-ver-2 are nt plrhthms. 6

The hi-hat and bass drum are plaed tgether thrughut this grve, while u perfrm the ffsets with the snare drum. While plaing alng t this sng, Schreder likes t use a china cmbal instead f a half-pen hihat since it gives him a different feel. He als adds a 32 nd nte plaed n the snare just befre the 1 n the next measure. He feels this reall helps the turnarund f the grve between phrases. Red Ht Chili Peppers Read Made In this sng u can hear the Chili Peppers drummer, Chad Smith, plaing this reall straight halftime grve. Then n the 4 th bar f the beat, instead f plaing the snare n the 3 like he was ding befrehand, he hits it n the 4. Ten Dllar Thmpsn A Thusand Ees This grve is in 6/8 and it is anther gd example f an ffset beat. The first bar is plaed reall straight with sme ghst ntes. In the secnd bar, instead f plaing the bass drum n the 1 cunt, Schreder plas it n the 6 f the first bar. Then n the AND f 1 he starts plaing a handt-feet cmbinatin that ends n a snare hit n the 4 cunt. Meshugga New Millennium Canide Christ Verse & Outr Thrugh this sng Schreder teaches tw actual plrhthms that make a fairl heav use f duble kick. The first ne is srt f the verse grve. The hi-hat and snare are plaed as quarter ntes; the hats are plaed n all fur cunts while the snare is alwas plaed n the 3 f each 8

Hence, u will have 16 beats t pla with bth hands and feet; at the end f the 4 measures, the 1 n bth hand and feet patterns will meet again. The secnd plrhthm is taken frm the utr f this sng. While u still keep plaing in 4/4 time, the kick pattern will be plaed in 6/4. This time u will have 2 bars f 6/4 time and 1 bar f 4/4 time. 9

One thing that reall helps him cncentrate n plaing a plrhthm is thinking f it as a reall big phrase instead f nl fcusing n plaing a 3 ver a sng that is in 4 fr instance. One ther gd tip is t think f the plrhthm as a sncpatin that just carries thrugh and reccles at the end f a certain number f bars. Like everthing in drumming, practice is the ke, s u have t first learn hw t fcus n tw r mre time signatures at the same time. Imprving Weaker Ft Strength Fr a warm up Schreder likes t alternate single strkes between the right and left side f his bd. During this exercise he favrs the weaker side f his bd (i.e., left ft and left hand), plaing fr instance 8 r 16 hits with it, while plaing 4 with the right side. This exercise shuld be plaed with a metrnme, starting at a slwer speed. It s super imprtant t pla things at a slw speed, because b learning this wa when u get t higher speeds u wn t rush the strkes and will be able t pla it cleanl. This will nt nl imprve ft strength but imprve ur verall crdinatin. One ther ptin u have is t pla a basic rck grve with 16 th ntes n the bass drum. Start at a slwer temp and wrk ur wa up. One ther idea u can use, is t lead with ur left ft n the bass drum. 10

S u can start b fcusing n the snare drum, since all the wa frm the edge int the center u have a great variet f sunds. Start b finding where ur snare sunds the best fr u. Take a sharpie and draw a circle n that spt; r If u dn t want t use a pen n ur drum skin, u have ther ptins like duck tape r electrical tape. Watch urself pla as u tr striking that area f ur drum. Start slw and wrk ur wa up. Eventuall, if u cntinue ding this fr lng enugh time, ur arm will alwas find a wa t cme back t the same psitin. Tr listening clsel t the sund that cmes frm ur snare because u will definitel be able t listen t the differences between hits. Imprving One Handed 16 th Nte Grves Speed Schreder learned the technique he uses fr plaing ne handed 16 th nte grves n the hihat, like n the pla-alng Ever Dne Befre b Sterr, frm a drummer named Bran Brain Mantia. Bran called it the shank-tip methd, which is actuall like Meller. When u make a strke with n ur hi-hat u use the shank f the stick n the edge f the cmbals. When u lift the stick up, u add an extra hit with the tip f ur stick. His writs are just mving up and dwn, and with ever up r dwn mvement there is a strke. Yu have t practice this regularl and preferabl t a click track, s u can get cnsistent with it. Remember that speed cmes with cnsistenc and diligent practice. Writing Drum Parts As far as writing drum parts fr Sterr and all the ther stuff he has dne, Schreder tries listening fr sncpatin n the ther instruments, t be able t cmplement that with his drum parts. Tr learning and listening t new stles f music, it can help u t keep inspired and t get new ideas. Drum Set Set-Up Fr Schreder, the psitining f ever instrument n his drum kit is based n his snare drum. This drum has t be in a ver cmfrtable psitin, ne that enables the perfrmance f a full Meller strke withut hitting the leg. Frm there, his tms sit 2 t 3 inches abve the snare, angling twards him. There are sme drummers that pla traditinal grip and angle their tms awa frm them; which fr sme reasn wrks well fr them. This tpe f psitining used b Schreder enables the stick t hit the drums in the mst parallel angle pssible withut hitting the rim. This wrks fr the flr tms as well; Schreder leans them twards him and psitins them clse enugh t make minimum mvement. 11
