1 UNIT 10 SUMMARY AND PRACTICE HOMEWORK UNIT 10 SUMMARY Ntice: Layut is different fr this and all future Units because we are nw reaching critical mass with ur review materials. Hpefully, yu will find this layut easier t use. Warm-Up Vide: This lessn teaches yu sme basic stretches and warm-ups. This is a great habit t get int, in fact, it s CRITICAL t yur health and well-being. Please make it a part f yur rutine. Lessn 10.1: Things t Knw Abut May Sng May Sng is based n yur A Majr scale and arpeggi, with little decratins added in. Use Spider Fingers at the beginning arpeggi. Then, GLUE yur 3 Pigs when ding the descending scale n the A string. May Sng uses Dynamics and has a Decrescend. Memrize where the dynamics happen, and learn t play Frte, Pian, Mezz Frten, and a Decrescend. Remember the rle yur Highway Lanes (Sunding Pint) plays in dynamics. We start learning t change lanes fr different effects, like dynamic changes. Lessn 10.2: Tnalizatins We mved this lessn t Unit 9, and it is nw called Lessn 9.2: Intrductin t Suzuki Tnalizatins Lessn 10.3: Rhythm Builders We played thrugh all the variatins tapping ur ft t the beat. (mst imprtant skill!) Then we played ur variatins while trying t cunt alng. Then, yu clapped the Variatin B rhythm while I clapped ppsing rhythms, and yu were trying t listen t what I played while ding yur wn part. THEN, yu played the Variatin B rhythm n an pen string while I played ppsing rhythms and even played the Twinkle Theme. Yu are learning t LISTEN t thers as yu play yur part. Finally, yu clapped the BEAT while I played Variatin A, and I changed the temp, and yu tried t keep up with me. This teaches yu that TEMPO can change, and the BEAT has t fllw. 2 Practice Cach Part 1 and 2: The Practice Caches fr Unit 10 are dedicated t just a few very imprtant details, which I really want yu t master. We wrk n sme f the details n May Sng, but then we wrk n Tnalizatins and Changing Lanes and Dynamics, Open A Lane Changes, Repertire Review with Dynamics and Lane Changes, and STRAIGHT BOW. Technique Review Practice Assignments (Units 1-9) Spend apprximately 25% f yur practice time this week n this sectin. Bw Hand Technique Review Ww.please STRETCH and WARM-UP befre yu d this! I just pulled a muscle last week filming Windshield Wipers Bw Benders withut warming up! Windshield Wipers: Make an advanced bw hld fllwed by 30 very quick windshield wipers. Check yur bw hand after--d yu still have bent pinky and thumb? D this 1x/day r 7 times ttal Bw Benders: D 20 per day, at the tip, r wherever yu can with NO PAIN. Pinky Pushups 15x/day. (HOLD YOUR RIGHT WRIST with yur LEFT HAND!!! (this exercise is still very imprtant) Set bw straight with eyes clsed at MID-BOW, then check mirrr fr straightness. 2x/day, r 14 times ttal. (this exercise is still very imprtant) Set bw straight with eyes clsed at TIP, then check mirrr fr straightness. 3x/day, r 21x ttal. (this exercise is still very imprtant) Bw Circle Practice: Play yur pen A string with repeated bw circles. Play yur pen E string with repeated bw Circles. Practice A, C#, E (half-arpeggi) with bw circles each time yu reach pen E. DO NOT DROP YOUR BOW ELBOW AGAINST YOUR RIBS n bw circles! This is a beginner s tendency! Keep elbw LEVEL with wrist (rughly). Practice slw circles and fast circles (smaller circles are faster circles!) Make sure yu SET THE BOW STILL befre playing the next nte! Mve quickly thrugh the air t get yu back t the string with time t spare! Left Hand Technique Review Psture, Playing Psitin, Cupcakes/Pancakes are nw part f yur permanent, autmatic technique arsenal. Cmbine Left Hand Starting Psitin with 3 Blind Pig Races with relaxed thumb and pen musehle. D these cmbined 2x per day, r 14x each, ttal. Slidey 2 s: Practice yur slidey 2 s, just a cuple times n the A string. (30 sec)

Half Scale with E Drne: (Cupcake Bsters) Try t slide yur 2 n this scale. Verify that yur head is straight up, r maybe leaning left ever s slightly. Cntinue wrking with yur shulder rest if yu are nt 100% cmfrtable and relaxed. It is wrth ANY amunt f time yu spend. This culd take yu six mnths. Dn t wrry.it is hard t get right.just keep striving. Repertire Review: Units 1-9 Spend apprximately 40% f yur practice time n this sectin. If yu need t warm up by clapping, r scrubbing n yur arm, r playing pen strings, please d s. This type f warm-up helps many peple. Remember t use a mirrr REGULARLY in yur practice sessins, t help yu with yur straight bw. This will be VERY helpful t yu! Play Twinkle Variatin A 1x/day, r 7x ttal. Yu MUST have the fllwing skills stacked simultaneusly: Bw Hand: Perfect bw hld, Greasy Elbw, Straight Bw, Highway, Heavy Bw Left Hand: Open Musehle, relaxed thumb, slanted knuckles and tall cupcakes, straight wrist, relax thumb, HOVER pinky nt in basement r fly-away, Intellectual Skills: Try t cunt as yu play, r tap yur ft t the beat, name the ntes Psture and Frm: Gd psture, head tilts left, RELAX shulder, balanced feet Play Twinkle Variatin B 1x/day, r 7x ttal. Apply yur skills stack t this variatin. Try t cunt r tap yur ft t the beat, r play this variatin with a metrnme. (I prefer that yu tap yur ft, but if yu want, yu can let yur metrnme help yu t tap yur ft.remember, INTERNAL rhythm is crucial!) Play Twinkle Variatin C 1x/day, r 7 x ttal. Use the entire upper half f yur bw. Try cunting r stmping the beat with this variatin a cuple times this week. G ahead and mve yur bw clser t the bridge. This will allw fr even heavier bw! Play Twinkle Variatin D 1x/day, r 7 times ttal. Heavy detache, highway, greasy elbw, straight bw ALL must happen perfectly. (skills stack pririties!) Relax left thumb, musehle, 3 pigs n tapes, gd cupcakes. G ahead and play in lane 2 if yu want t that is the lane CLOSER t the bridge frm the middle. Play Twinkle Variatin E 1x/day, r 7 times ttal. 4 Play Twinkle Theme 2x/day, r 14 times ttal. Cntrl yur bw speed t accmmdate lnger ntes. Bw weight, highway, straight bw must all happen perfectly. Try t wiggle yur left thumb t ensure relaxatin! Play Lightly Rw 2x/day, r 14 times ttal. Pay attentin t refining yur sund, and mastering yur BOW SPEED. This is a spider finger sng! Play yur A Majr arpeggi 1x/day, with any rhythm yu want, including plain ld quarter ntes if yu like. Name the ntes as yu g. (Intellectual Skills) Pay attentin t yur independent finger mtin (spider fingers) n 2nd and 3rd finger. (Left Hand Skills) D NOT allw yur pinky t g int the basement. Dn t allw fingers t fly away! Play yur A Majr 1-ctave scale 1x/day, with any rhythm yu chse, r with plain ld quarter ntes if yu prefer. Play Sng f the Wind 2x/day, r 14 times ttal. Start getting this sng up t speed. Play with the Play-Alng vides. Watch yur bw circles and dn t let yur bw bunce! Play G Tell Aunt Rhdie 3x/day, r 21 times ttal. Try the exercise frm the Practice Cach. Play the beginning FORTE in Lane 2, play the middle PIANO in Lane 4, and play the end FORTE in Lane 2. This skill is crucial t teach yu hw t change lanes n the fly. Play Oh Cme Little Children 2-3x/day. Remember, bw speed, and finger glue! UNIT 10 REVIEW CHALLENGE: At sme pint in Unit 10, I want yu t play ALL yur repertire that yu have learned s far with the pian accmpaniment MP3 s. If yu need a little extra help, play with the PERFORMANCE TEMPO vide, s yu can hear me playing alng with yu. We are nt learning t play vilin in a vacuum we want t be able t play with thers! Unit 10 Practice Assignments Spend apprximately 35% f ttal practice time n these tasks. Practice the Open String String Crssing exercise intrduced in Lessn (1 minute) Yu will be playing the rhythms t May Sng. Remember what I tld yu t listen fr in String Crssings! Practice May Sng. Watch ut fr String Crssings. Learn the dynamics. ALWAYS d the dynamics. Remember the repeat. (5-8 minutes) Lane Changes and Dynamics: Play Open A, FORTE, in Lane 2 (clse t the bridge). Withut stpping, when yu are ready, mve t Lane 4, and play PIANO. Learn t scch yur bw frm ne lane t anther. (1 minute) Tnalizatins: Play all 3 Tnalizatins. Play each tnalizatin FORTE, in Lane 2, and PIANO, in Lane 4. (2 minutes)
