Lunde, Agricultural Engineer The bench and cabinet plan presented in this circular slves the big prblem f a fixed wrk bench: bth tls and bench can be mved where they are needed inside r ut. This bench saves bth time and effrt. "Husecleaning" is much easier, and tls and wrking area are in a cmpact unit fr prtable, instant use. Cnstructin Cnstructin details are drawn n pages 3 and 4. The layut fr cutting the plywd pieces als is shwn. One 4' x 8' sheet f 3/4" plywd and ne sheet f 1/2" plywd are all that is needed f these sizes. The drawer bttms are made f 1/4" plywd, fur pieces 18 1/2" x 19 3/4". This is enugh thickness unless yu plan t use tl utline pieces in the drawer bttms. The legs and tw crsspieces at the tp are made f fir 2 x 4, s. Pine is best fr the drawer runners and guides, since it planes smther n the edges. Drawers then slide mre freely, and are less likely t split when attaching. A gd water-resistant r water-prf glue used where indicated will make a much mre slid and durable unit. f the back and end pieces are als glued befre nailing t the legs, it will insure the bench against racking and lsening up with use. The pistn rack (shwn in Figure 1) is ptinal, but handy t have if yu are dismantling engines. The best tp cvering is sheet metal, but tempered hardbard can be substituted if service is mderate and yu want t cut csts. Glue the entire surface under pressure, if pssible. Then apply an edge mlding t cver the expsed edges. This mlding culd be a hardwd r metal strip. Yu can fasten a small vice t the frnt, right-hand crner. ts weight then will be ver the wheels, and nt add t the weight lad n the handle when mving the bench. f the vice is lcated n the end with the drawers, it will interfere t sme extent with easy access t the tp drawer. The wheels are 6" diameter, slid cast irn discs. They are large enugh t rll easily ver rugh places in the flr. Because the legs at the ther end rest directly n the flr, the bench stays "anchred"nce it is psitined. Heavy duty casters culd be used under all fur legs, but smaller wheels need a smth flr t rll prperly. With casters, the bench always tends t mve arund t easily when yu're wrking. The larger cast irn disc wheels shuld nt be t difficult t btain, and shuld be cheaper and last lnger than casters r ther types f wheels. Larger wheels can be used if yu desire t mve the bench utdrs and away frm a gd flr surface.
