2 Hale Super Summer Classes Summer Youth Programs at Hale How to Register You can register online at by calling , or use the registration form in this brochure to register by mail. All registrations are on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign up early to ensure your place. Class fees include costs of supplies and materials unless otherwise specified. Class Logistics Classes in this brochure are held at Hale Community School, 1220 E. 54th St., Minneapolis, MN Most classes are for children entering first through eighth grades in Fall of Grades indicated in the course descriptions refer to the grade the child will enter in Fall Children entering kindergarten this Fall (2015) are not eligible to attend classes. Super Summer classes are offered mornings and afternoons Monday through Thursday. Classes begin the week of June 15. Class Times Super Summer classes at Hale are scheduled mornings between 9 am and 12 pm and afternoons between 12:30 pm and 3:30 pm. For classes that are 1.5 hours long, there are scheduling options for taking two classes back-to-back. Cancelations & Refunds If a class is canceled due to low enrollment, a full refund will be granted. Participants who drop out of a class at least three business days in advance of the start date will receive a full refund minus a $10/class processing fee. No Transportation Community Education does not provide transportation to Hale Super Summer classes or transportation between summer sites. Questions? This class is all about jumping in, having fun, playing hard, working together and finding your voice. Always fun, this class will focus on developing improve skills and creating performers. Advanced Solar (Grades 4-8) In this class, kids continue to develop their prior skills with building solar power cars and machines. In this class there is plenty of time for kids to design different vehicles. 12:30-3:30 pm $85 Adventures in Space Ever dream about being an astronaut? Wonder what it s like to live in space? Learn all about what it takes to explore the cosmos this summer, from rockets to space food to star gazing! Section 1 (Grades 1-3) Section 2 (Grades 4-8) 2 Looking for more Summer fun? Hale is also offering two week-long camps with themed activities. See page 11 for more details.

3 Baking (Grades 4-8) Do you have insatiable sweet tooth but don t want to ruin your health for it? Learn how to create and then taste from an assortment of truly decadent desserts that will delight while using surprising ingredients that will add vitality back into your life. The class fee includes the cost for all of your cooking supplies. 9 am-12 pm $75 Basketball (Grades 4-8) Come join your friends and play your favorite game! You will also practice shooting, dribbling and blocking. You will play Basketball as well as other variations such as lightening, 21, and HORSE. Bike Adventures Bike riding is a blast, especially on a well-tuned bicycle. Practice a variety of simple tasks that keep a bike running smoothly. Join us on supervised bike rides to a variety of fun locations. You must wear a bike helmet while riding and bring a water bottle on trips. Section 1 9 am-12 pm $70 Section 2 (Grades 4-8) 12:30-3:30 pm $70 Beginning Broadway Enjoy performing on stage? Do you hope to become an actor or actress in the future? Do you like telling stories? Beginning Broadway is for you! You will learn the proper ways to move on the stage, speak, and pantomime with costumes and props. Broadway, here we come! Boys Soccer (Grades 4-8) Calling all you soccer fans! Improve or learn all of the basic soccer skills such as dribbling, passing, heading and trapping. Your teachers will discuss and demonstrate strategies and teamwork and help make you a much better player by improving your skills. Don t miss the fun and the action! Capture the Flag (Grades 4-8) Play capture the flag and other challenging physical games outside. Dodgeball, 3 Pin, Medic, Mike Ball (Grades 4-8) Play your favorite ball games such as Dodgeball, Mike Ball, 3 Pin, and Medic. You will also play other gym games such as speedball, Elves, Giants, and Wizards and other fun summertime classics! Exploring Volcanoes & Physical Science Have you ever wondered what makes a volcano explode? Or why you don t fall straight down when going through terrifying loops on rollercoasters? Here is your chance to find the answer by learning about volcanoes, rollercoasters, the solar system and much more. Flag Football (Grades 4-8) Come join your friends in one of your favorite sports. Fun & Messy Art Do you enjoy creating art using messy art materials like finger paints, glitter, glue, tissue paper and stamps? Here s a chance to do it under supervision. Wear clothes that are okay to get messy. Harry Potter Adventures (Grades 3-6) Harry Potter stories are full of exciting things to discuss and projects to do. You ll be involved in a variety of activities from making magic potions and wands to re-writing some of your favorite parts of the Harry Potter series. Bring out the wizard in you! 9 am-12 pm $70 Intro to Paper Mache Get more than just a little sticky with newspaper and glue bring familiar objects to life! This class is all about brainstorming, folding, rolling, pasting and painting and taking time for objects to dry. Register now and get into your favorite classes! Visit us online at Hale Super Summer Classes Board Games (Grades 1-5) With all of the technology and screen time today, it s nice to sit down with friends and play board games. Apples to Apples, Sorry, Battleship, Monopoly, Life, and Checkers are just a few that you will be able to play. You can also bring your own board games from home to play with others. 3

4 Hale Super Summer Classes Week One Continued from page 3 Introduction to Solar Energy (Grades 1-3) Kids will build multiple solar-powered race cars, robots and machines. This green energy learning program has a great balance between hands-on learning and fun. 9 am-12 pm $85 LEGO Club (Grades 1-6) Do you love building, creating, and having fun with LEGOs? Then this class is for you! Join us for free building time, construction contests, and a showing of The LEGO Movie (rated PG). Minecraft LEGO Engineering Create mob figures, custom blocks, torches, custom biomes and terrains from the Minecraft video game! We will use both cardboard papercrafts and LEGOs to create our worlds. Builders will be challenged to bring their virtual designs from the game to life and get to take home a daily project. Most materials will be for class use only. Take-home projects include: a mini handcrafted LED-lit Redstone torch, 2 LEGO micro-figs, and 2 papercrafts. Section 1 (Grades 1-2) 9:00-10:30 am $65 Section 2 (Grades 3-6) 10:30 am-12 pm $65 Minute to Win It (Grades 4-8) This class is based on the popular TV game show that keeps everyone on their toes. Each day, you will be challenged by fun obstacles and tasks. Do you have what it takes to complete them in less than 60 seconds? News of Now (Grades 4-8) Creative writers, journalists, and artists, are invited to create News of Now. This newspaper publishes students articles, stories (true or fiction), poetry, opinions, photographs, drawings and cartoons! News of Now, part of the Connection, is created. 12:30-3:30 pm $70 Outdoor Fun (Grades 1-5) Go hiking, explore nature, play games with sidewalk chalk, have a scavenger hunt, and jump rope. Passport Around the World Learn about different cultures and traditions, make awesome crafts, and eat a variety of foods from around the world. We will be traveling to a different country every day. Join us for a week of fun! Recycled Art Going green has never been so beautiful! We will make art creations using every day recyclables, such as newspapers, egg cartons, colorful cardboard, plastic, and more! Young Naturalists (Grades 1-6) Come join our staff for some exciting outdoor explorations of plants and animals in their natural habitats. Science-oriented session topics include pond life, insects and spiders, soil creatures, and birds. By registering, you are giving your student permission to walk along Minnehaha creek or Lake Nokomis to explore wildlife. Zumbatonix (Grades 4-8) Ready to take dance and fitness to the next level? Come break a sweat while having fun in this Zumba-style inspired class. The beats of today s most popular Latin, hip hop and pop music will move you to the groove. You ll learn funky new dance moves that will keep you in shape and can even be used on the dance floor. Zumba is quickly becoming a popular way to stay active and healthy with all of your friends. No experience needed! Students should wear comfortable clothing, tennis shoes and bring a labeled water bottle. 4 Sports Extravaganza Camp Love Sports? We have a full week of sports and fun activities for you! See page 11 for more details.

5 Week Two June 22-25, Mon-Thu Advanced Solar (Grades 4-8) 12:30-3:30 pm $85 Adventures in Space Section 1 (Grades 1-3) Section 2 (Grades 4-8) Backyard Games (Grades 1-5) Even in the digital age, old-fashioned outdoor games are great fun and good exercise. Play games like kick the can, four-square, freeze tag, horse, capture the flag and more. Basketball (Grades 4-8) Beach Party We ll go to the beach for a week of fun! We ll play games, have sand castle building contests, and soak up the sun! Make sure to pack sunscreen and a water bottle! 9 am-12 pm $70 Bike Adventures (Grades 3-8) Bike riding is a blast, especially on a well-tuned bicycle. Practice a variety of simple tasks that keep a bike running smoothly. Join us on supervised bike rides to a variety of fun locations. Sharpen your skills and surprise your opponent by calling checkmate early in the game! This kind of practice will help you develop your analytical skills, concentration, and memory while having fun. You ll have a chance to learn and play and we ll have a tournament on the last day. Cooking: Breakfast Specialities! (Grades 4-8) In this class, we ll prepare the most important meal of the day Breakfast! Eggs all ways, pastries, pancakes you name it! We may even try some breakfast dishes from around the world or maybe we ll even bake our own granola. Join me for a week of cool crafts that don t hang on the wall. We ll make light sabers, gooey putty, and all kinds of cool gadgets. Creative Writing (Grades 4-8) Do you like to write? Do you have a creative imagination? Here s your chance to write and illustrate your own stories and poems. You can model your work after an author you like, or develop your own style and form. We ll share our work and help each other use our imaginations to the fullest! Edible Science & Gross Goodies Have your science and eat it, too! Make and eat unusual, but good-tasting chow like ice cream in a bag and smoothies. Do a variety of experiments using materials found in the kitchen. Flag Football (Grades 4-8) Come join your friends in one of your favorite sports. Floor Hockey (Grades 1-5) Here s your chance to play and improve your indoor hockey skills. We will play a variety of indoor and outdoor games, including: four-square, duck, duck, grey duck, capture the flag, Simon says, telephone, and more! Girls Soccer (Grades 4-8) Calling all you soccer fans! Improve or learn all of the basic soccer skills such as dribbling, passing, heading and trapping. Introduction to Solar Energy (Grades 1-3) 9 am-12 pm $85 Minecraft Game Designer (Grades 1-5) Don t just play Minecraft! Turn Minecraft from a game into a visual learning tool! This course introduces students to a whole new world of possibilities in Minecraft. This class will reinforce problem solving skills and spatial cognition through learning to create in-game puzzles, mazes and obstacle courses. Students will learn basic game design skills while they collaborate to build Adventure maps, as well as some advanced features such as Command Blocks. This class has a strong emphasis on creativity, exploration and co-operative learning experiences. Students will be able to take their custom worlds home on a Flash drive to continue developing these worlds on their home computers. Please bring a drink and snack daily. 10:30 am- 12 pm $60 Nature Art Make art creations using commonly found items found right outside your door including leaves, pinecones, rocks, and more. Visit us online at News of Now (Grades 4-8) 12:30-3:30 pm $70 Ooey, Gooey Crafts Don t be afraid to get your hands dirty as we finger paint, make paper maché masterpieces, and create all sorts of messy artwork. Bring a shirt you don t mind getting paint on. Painting 101 Create original works of art using watercolor, tempera, acrylic and ink. A variety of techniques will be used as well including dry brush, sponges, tissue paper, and believe it or not food. Poetry & Spoken Word (Grades 4-8) Have an issue you re madly passionate about? Our teachers will help you create an outline for your performance. You ll learn how to ignite emotion in your audience by rhyming, rapping and telling your story. Proper Etiquette (Grades 4-8) In this class, students will learn good manners, good behavior, table etiquette, making introductions, cultural saavy, and good /texting manners. Harry Potter Club Join us for an awesome adventure! We will be making wands, playing quidditch, brewing potions, and learning all about the magical world of Harry Potter. Imagine it, Create it, Write it (Grades 3-8) You have a story to tell and here you can release it. Discover the fun in your world and unleash your imagination through the art of creative writing. 6

7 Robotic Builders Yes, We CAN learn about Robotics! With the LEGO WeDo Robotics System, young children can build and program their own robotic creations. Designed by the experts at MIT, this unique system teaches children about simple machines, engineering, programming and so much more. Young imaginations soar! The LEGO Education WeDo Robotics Builder allows students to explore different Robotic Themes. Possible models may include: Dancing Birds, Hungry Alligator Robot, Goal Kicker Robot, Rescue Plane, and a Smart Spinner Robot. Students working in teams will work with simple machines, program models they design and create, measure time and distance, write, and much more! Your students will build LEGO models featuring working motors, tilt sensors, motion detectors, and Lego USB Robotics Hub. Please bring a drink and snack daily. 9:00-10:30 am $60 Story & Pop-up Book Making (Grades 1-5) Create your own storybook! Over the week, you will be busy creating your own special story using various art supplies. We ll help give you ideas and inspiration for your book. Storytelling & Crafts (Grades 1-5) Come join your friends for your favorite stories. You will make different crafts using various art supplies after reading and discussing some of your favorite books! Young Naturalists (Grades 1-6) Come join our staff for some exciting outdoor explorations of plants and animals in their natural habitats. 8 Hale Super Summer Classes Week Three Continued from page 7 Intro to Paper Mache LEGO Club (Grades 1-6) Minecraft Movie Making (Grades 1-5) Minecraft is the game phenomenon focused on creativity and building, allowing players to build environments out of textured cubes in a virtual 3D world. Working in groups, students will be introduced to Minecraft in real life with our customized LEGOs, and finally film a stop motion movie using Minecraft-inspired LEGO creations. The focus will be on creating Minecraftinspired LEGO worlds, and filming. Students will take home 2 LEGO Microfigs and an animated movie to show off their creations. Not only will we learn about these cool critters, we ll do some cool crafts and eat fun themed snacks! Learn the basics of Java coding with Minecraft! Programming experience recommended. Students should be comfortable with keyboarding, and of course playing Minecraft! We will be coding using Eclipse and the Forge API to make single player mods for PC Version of Minecraft 1.7. We will test our mods with Minecraft game play. Students will learn to create custom items, blocks, recipes, tools, ores, and armor. At the end of class, take home your Mods to share with family and friends. Week-long Summer Day Camps These week-long camps are held Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. You may attend the morning session from 9:00 am-12:00 pm for $50, our afternoon session from 12:30-3:30 pm for $50, or both sessions for $85. Thursday will feature a day-long field trip additional fees apply. You also have the option to enroll for the Thursday field trip only you do not need to be registered in the full-week program to attend. Week Five July 13-16, Mon-Thu Sports Extravaganza Camp For youth in Grades 1 to 8 During the week, you will play many gym and outside games, host tournaments, have individual and team sport competitions such as soccer, football, basketball, floor hockey and more of your favorite sports! In addition to physical activities, you will create sports arts and crafts, write sport stories in your own journal and do many more exciting activities! Please bring water daily and be sure to pack a lunch for the all-day field trip to Grand Slam in Burnsville on Thursday. Week Six July 20-23, Mon-Thu Nature s Tropical Paradise Camp For youth in Grades 1 to 8 Come join your friends in this exciting camp! During the week of Nature s Tropical Paradise Camp, you will take hikes, learn about the great outdoors, fish, go to the beach, learn about insects and bugs and create many fun naturethemed art projects! Please bring water daily and pack a lunch for the all-day field trip on Thursday to either Cascade Bay in Eagan or the Lake Minnetonka Swimming Pond at 3 Rivers Park in Minnetrista.
