THE SEAHAWK St. Monica Catholic Elementary School s Student Newspaper Special Issue! Jimmy S. This special issue of The Seahawk introduces you to our student-staffers who present the SMCES news from their point of view. Congratulations to them on a successful year s learning and collaborative work! Special thanks to the students who served as student editors this year: Olivia S. and Grace C. Each of these young women put in extra effort to lead the staff for one issue. For this special issue, staff members were asked to use the skills they have honed this year to write introductory articles about themselves and to include well-composed, interesting selfies. I am proud to introduce this year s Seahawk staff! My name is Jimmy S. I am in the third grade and what I ve enjoyed most this year is being with my school friends. My favorite newspaper assignment completed this year was my twoword interview with Mr. A. He was a great interview subject, nice to work with. I learned to be kind to others and to respect people when I was working on The Seahawk. Outside of school one of my talents is performing magic tricks. I hope to one day perform them in the talent show. This summer I am looking forward to going to Mexico. I want to see another country with different traditions, because the only other country I have been to is Australia. Over the summer I will also prepare myself for the next school year by studying hard. I like video games such as Dungeon Boss and Kingdom Rush. I enjoy playing basketball and soccer and hanging out with my friends Tommy, Zico, Ryan, and Kaelen. I really like this school and all the teachers in it. I hope to stay at this school all the way up to eighth grade. Mrs. Corrigan, Moderator 1
Anna M. Michael S. My name is Michael S. and I am in fourth grade. This year, my favorite newspaper assignment was Fun Facts on USC. Being on staff helped me improve my ability to interview people..i am looking forward to traveling this summer. And I am planning to prepare for next school year by reading lots of books. I love sports and I know that I will enjoy a very athletic summer. I hope to spend a lot of time swimming and playing on the beach. I'm sure I will spend some of my time playing video games and hanging with friends. Hi. My name is Anna M. I am in the third grade at St. Monica Catholic Elementary School. My hobbies are playing basketball, drawing comics and writing stories about cute marshmallows. I collect hand sanitizer. Hay! It s flu season. I am very exited about summer. I was on the volleyball track and basketball team. Go sea hawk s!!! (: (: Jayden G. My name is Jayden G. I am in fourth grade. My favorite Seahawk assignment that I have done was the Walk Through California report. It s my favorite one because we all learned about California in the 1400 s-1800 s. What I learned from being on the Seahawk staff was how to make a perfect report (I can't tell you it s a secret). Some talents of mine are that I am athletic and great at magic tricks. An interest I have outside of school is science experiments. I am looking forward to summer because there is NO SCHOOL FOR TWO WHOLE MONTHS!!! I am going to prepare myself for fifth grade by Acing my last tests for the rest of the school year. I have really enjoyed being on The Seahawk because I got to hang out with my friends. I have been an interviewer, photographer, and even a reporter. I have gotten to work with my friends on assignments and much more. 2
Elizabeth J. Hello readers of this month s Seahawk! Whether you have read the newspaper every month, or you have just decided to pick it up today, thank you for reading my article. I am Elizabeth J., a fourth grader at St. Monica. I have been writing for the paper since third grade, and I am grateful for the opportunity. My favorite newspaper assignment was when I got to work as a reporter with my friends Olivia and G.G. for the St. Patrick s Day article because it was the most fun. I haven t been on the Seahawk for as long as other students have, but I have learned one very important thing, a deadline is a writer s way to be responsible, and being responsible is a writer s way to meet deadlines. I think that the newspaper has taught me a lot in two years, and I can t wait to learn and create some interesting articles next year. Outside of school, I do many things. Some of my talents are piano, singing, and volleyball, which I just started this school year. Out of the three, I like singing the most. Over the summer I hope to learn a new piano piece and hopefully ride my bike and play volleyball more often. An interest of mine is reading. I will prepare myself for fifth grade by catching up on a lot of summer reading. I hope that your summer will be great too. Thank you again for reading this month s Seahawk! William L. 3
Isabella M. Hi! My name is Isabella M. I am in the 5 th grade. I am 10 years old and have a little brother. My favorite newspaper assignment that I completed this year was the February puzzle. I learned from The Seahawk that teamwork goes a long way and that you have to work together if you are to reach a common goal. One of my interests outside of school is running. This summer I am looking forward to a trip to Albuquerque, New Mexico, my home land! To prepare myself for next school year I am going to read a lot of books so I can get good grades in reading literature and grammar. Isabella P. My name is Isabella P. and I am in 5 th grade. I am 11 years old and just finished another great year with the newspaper. I think this year I really learned how to give credit. My favorite Newspaper assignment this year was the What are you doing over the Summer Survey. This summer I am looking forward to spend lots and lots of time at the beach with my friends and play with my two dogs. I am also ready to read many books so I can catch up to a new level. I am definitely joining newspaper next year in 6 th grade. I hope you enjoyed learning about me! Thank you so much Mrs. Corrigan for making this year another great one! 4
Whelan S. My name is Whelan S., and I am in 5th grade going into 6th grade at our new middle school. My favorite newspaper assignment this year was the 2 Word Interview because there were a lot of funny bloopers with the TK kids! On the Seahawks staff, I learned how to turn an interview into an article, and how to meet deadlines. My hobbies outside of school include boogie boarding, surfing and golfing. I'm looking forward to spending a lot of time at the beach this summer. I'm going to prepare myself for next year by having a really fun summer! Monica T. My name is Monica T. and I am in 6 th grade. My favorite newspaper assignment was the Dancing With Our Stars article because it was about Mrs. Putnam and Mr. Clark who were the top dancers. I learned how to write better from being on the Seahawk staff. My talents outside school are Judo and Irish dance. I am looking forward to going to a few camps and seeing a best friend who goes to a different school. I am going to prepare for next year by studying over the summer going over what I learned this year. I hope everyone has a good summer. 5
Madeline C. Sophie N. Bonjour!! Je m'appelle Sophie!! I have been a Seahawk Newspaper writer, photographer, and interviewer since the newspaper began. I love being a part of the school newspaper, and being able to write articles of things going in this wonderful school. For the past 3 years I have done so many articles, but the Talented Student column has been my favorite article to write this year. I loved writing about all the talented students we have at this school, which really means all of us! Other than writing in the Seahawks, I m an Irish dancer, I love reading, and I like to bling bows, and create other artworks that I can share with all my friends and family. I also like baking and cooking, and take pictures of anything around me. Salute! I hope you enjoyed the last article by Sophie N. Have a wonderful summer and I ll see you again in the Fall!! 6
Grace C. My name is Grace C. and I am in 7th grade. My favorite newspaper assignment was fun fact, where I wrote about penguins and polar bears. One thing I ve learned from newspaper is to give credit. Outside of school I am an Irish dancer, and I enjoy listening to the Hamilton musical soundtrack non-stop. I am excited to go to Irish dance Nationals this summer. To prepare for the next school year, I am going to do my assignments. Thank you for reading this. Peace out. Stephanie S. My name is Stephanie S. I have been at St. Monica s since Kindergarden. I am in the 7th grade going into the 8th grade. I have been on the Newspaper since it began here, and I really enjoy being on The Seahawk staff. I have learnt so much and have interacted with so many fun people. I have learnt how to give credit to my information sources, not to plagiarize and how to avoid it, and how to integrate interviews into reports. This year my favorite newspaper assignment was when I interviewed Isabella P. about Legally Blonde. I had fun coming up with the questions and when I interviewed Isabella we couldn't stop laughing about the funny scenes in the movie! Outside of school, I am very busy. I am an avid reader and books are some of my favorite things in the world. I always want to go to the bookstore. I play lots of sports, both for fun and competitively. I play club volleyball and tennis which are my two favorite sports, but for fun I also play golf, swim, and surf. I am open to playing other sports like basketball and football with my family and friends. I am also a very artsy person. I love to draw, color, and paint. I have this intricate coloring book which I use all the time and my friend and I are starting to get into calligraphy. I love to go places such as Color- Me-Mine and Duff s Cakemix. This summer I am looking forward to going to the beach, sleeping in, hanging out with my friends, and doing many fun activities. I am going to prepare myself for the next school year by reading books and watching videos on some of our curriculum and completing my summer projects. I am so grateful that I attend St. Monica s and have the opportunity to be on The Seahawk staff. I can t wait for next year! 7
