Descripion The LS4/5 Series of AC-DC converers represens a flexible range of power supplies for use in advanced elecronic sysems. Feaures include full power facor correcion, good hold-up ime, high efficiency and reliabiliy, low oupu volage noise, and excellen dynamic response o load/line changes. The converers are proeced agains surges and ransiens occurring a he source lines. Inpu over- and undervolage lockou circuiry disables he oupus, when he inpu volage is ouside of he specified range. Inpu inrush curren limiaion is included for prevening circui breakers and fuses from ripping a swich-on. All oupus are overload, open- and shor-circui proof and proeced by a buil-in suppressor diode. The oupus can be inhibied by a logic signal applied o connecor pin 8. If he inhibi funcion is no used, pin 8 mus be conneced wih pin 4 o enable he oupus. LED indicaors display he saus of he converer and allow visual monioring of he sysem a any ime. Full inpu o oupu, inpu o case, oupu o case and oupu o oupu isolaion is provided. The converers are designed and buil according o he inernaional safey sandards IEC/EN nd Ed. They have been approved by he safey agencies Nemko and CSA (for USA and Canada). The case design allows for operaion a nominal load up o 7 C in a free air ambien emperaure. 4 Funcional Descripion The inpu volage is fed via an inpu fuse, an inpu filer, a recifier, and an inrush curren limier o a boos converer. This sep-up converer provides a sinusoidal inpu curren (IEC/EN 6-3-2, class D equipmen) and charges he bulk capacior C i o approx. 37 VDC. This capacior sources a single ransisor forward converer and provides he power during he hold-up ime. Each oupu is powered by a separae secondary winding of he main ransformer. Inpu Transien Proecion A VDR ogeher wih he inpu fuse and a symmerical inpu filer form an effecive proecion agains high inpu ransien volages. Inpu Fuse A fuse mouned inside he converer in series o he phase line proecs agains severe defecs. A second fuse in he neural line may be necessary in cerain applicaions; see Insallaion Insrucions. Fuse specificaion: Slow-blow, 4 A, 25 V, 5 2 mm. inrush curren value by a facor of 5 o o proec connecors and swiching devices from damage. Subsequen swich-on cycles wihin shor periods will cause an increase of he peak inrush curren value due o he warming-up of he NTC resisor. The power facor conrol is acive under all operaing condiions. The harmonic disorion is well below he limis specified in IEC/EN 6-3-2, class D. 9 Wa AC-DC PFC Converers Thermal Consideraions If a converer is locaed in free, quasi-saionary air (convecion cooling) a he indicaed maximum ambien emperaure T A max (see able Temperaure specificaions) and is operaed a is nominal inpu volage and oupu power, he emperaure measured a he Measuring poin of case emperaure T C (see Mechanical Daa) will approach he indicaed value T C max afer he warm-up phase. However, he relaionship beween T A and T C depends heavily on he condiions of operaion and inegraion ino a sysem. The hermal condiions are influenced by inpu volage, oupu curren, airflow, and emperaure of surrounding componens and surfaces. T A max is herefore, conrary o T C max, an indicaive value only. Cauion: The insaller mus ensure ha under all operaing condiions T C remains wihin he limis saed in he able Temperaure specificaions. Noes: Sufficien forced cooling or an addiional hea sink allows T A o be higher han 7 C (e.g. 85 C), if T C max is no exceeded. For -7 or -9 models a an ambien emperaure T A of 85 C wih only convecion cooling, he maximum permissible curren for each oupu is approx. 4% of is nominal value as per he figure below. I o /I o nom Convecion cooling Forced cooling 589a T C max Oupu Proecion Each oupu is proeced by a suppressor diode agains overvolage, which could occur due o a failure of he conrol circui. In such a case, he suppressor diode becomes a shor circui. The suppressor diodes may smooh shor overvolages resuling from dynamic load changes, bu hey are no designed o wihsand exernally applied overvolages. A shor circui a any of he wo oupus will cause a shu-down of he oher oupu. A red LED indicaes an overload condiion. Noe: V o BR is specified in Elecrical Oupu Daa. If his volage is exceeded, he suppressor diode generaes losses and may become a shor circui. Parallel or Series Connecion of Converers Single- or double-oupu models wih equal oupu volage can be conneced in parallel using opion T (curren sharing). If he T pins are inerconneced, all converers share he oupu curren equally. Single-oupu models and/or main and second oupus of double-oupu models can be conneced in series wih any oher (similar) oupu. Noes: Parallel connecion of double-oupu models should always include boh, main and second oupu o mainain good regulaion. No more han 5 converers should be conneced in parallel. Series connecion of second oupus wihou involving heir main oupus should be avoided, as regulaion may be poor. Oupu Regulaion of Double-Oupu Models Oupu is under normal condiions regulaed o V o nom, independen of he oupu currens. V o2 depends upon he load disribuion. If boh oupus are loaded wih more han % of I o nom, he deviaion of V o2 remains wihin ±5% of he value of V o. The following 3 figures show he regulaion wih varying load disribuion. Two oupus of an LS5 model conneced in parallel will behave like he oupu of an LS4 model. Noe: If oupu 2 is no used, we recommend connecing i in parallel wih oupu. 11 Wa AC-DC PFC Converers Auxiliary Funcions Inhibi for Remoe On and Off The oupus may be enabled or disabled by means of a logic signal (TTL, CMOS, ec.) applied beween he inhibi inpu i (pin 8) and pin 4 (S or Vo ). In sysems wih several converers, his feaure can be used o conrol he acivaion sequence of he converers. If he inhibi funcion is no required, connec he inhibi pin 8 o pin 4. Incorrecly conneced sense lines may acivae he overvolage proecion resuling in a permanen shor-circui of he oupu. This feaure allows for compensaion of volage drops across he connecor conacs and if necessary, across he load lines. We recommend connecing he sense lines direcly a he female connecor. To ensure correc operaion, boh sense lines (S+, S ) should be conneced o heir respecive power oupus (Vo+ and Vo ).
