1-1 C H A P T E R 1 Intrductin and Overview The Intrinsically Safe ADS ECHO is a cst-effective, easy-t-use, level mnitring system fr verflw preventin. It prvides cntinuus cllectin system mnitring, frm early warning f level increase, t surcharge detectin. Applicatins include: cmprehensive sewer perfrmance mnitring, early warning and ntificatin f sewer blckages and impending verflws, Cmbined Sewer Overflw (CSO) mnitring, Sanitary Sewer Overflw (SSO) mnitring, and sewer capacity studies. These capabilities are essential t prviding nging versight and ensuring timely ntificatin and rapid respnse in critical situatins. The battery-pwered, micrprcessr-based ECHO mnitr displays exceptinal accuracy and reliability in measuring flw depths up t 20 feet (6.1 m) frm the bttm f the reflectr. This manual ffers detailed instructins n installing and perating the ECHO mnitr, prviding (remte wireless and n-site Bluetth) cmmunicatin with the mnitr, and perfrming rutine maintenance and trubleshting n the system. It als includes detailed specificatins fr the system and a list f general, ptinal, and replacement parts assciated with the system.

1-2 ADS ECHO Manual System Cmpnent Overview ADS ECHO Mnitr ADS ECHO Mnitr The ECHO measures depth f flw using prven ADS ech ranging technlgy with advanced digital signal prcessing. A single, high-pwered transducer hused inside a tuned parablic reflectr reliably reads up t 20 feet (6.1 m) frm the bttm f the reflectr. The mnitr recrds data at a defined time interval based n system cnfiguratin. The mnitr can stre this data in memry and use the data t generate an alarm. The mnitr memry can stre apprximately 18 mnths f data lgged at a 5-minute sample rate. This data is available t the user fr cllectin, further prcessing, analysis, and reprting. The all-in-ne ECHO mnitr requires n separate sensrs r cables, and is designed t be munted near the tp f manhle frame.

Intrductin and Overview 1-3 Micrprcessr Unit (MPU) ECHO Mnitr Munted in Manhle The Micrprcessr Unit (MPU) is the surce f all mnitr activity and is respnsible fr all f the mnitr s high-level functins, including: Maintaining the mnitr time and date Measuring the wireless signal strength Perfrming pwer management Transmitting the stred and current data t the user s PC, ADS FlwView, a user s address, r an FTP Server Initiating event and alarm ntificatin The MPU allcates prtins f memry t firmware (permanently stred sftware) and data strage. Lightemitting dides (LEDs) indicate the mnitr cmmunicatins and peratinal activity. The MPU als includes the mnitr clck, randm access memry (RAM), and Flash memry. The mnitr uses RAM while taking readings and prcessing data. The RAM then dwnlads the data t Flash, r nn-vlatile memry, which als stres the mnitr firmware and cnfiguratin infrmatin. Flash ensures the mnitr maintains the data during battery pack replacement r pwer failure.

1-4 ADS ECHO Manual Cmmunicatin Elements The ECHO perfrms remte, wireless cmmunicatin ver the cellular netwrk using HSPA/HSPA+ (Evlved High-Speed Packet Access) thrugh the mdem in the mnitr. HSPA/HSPA+ facilitates highspeed, lw-cst, efficient TCP/IP cmmunicatin in areas with wireless cverage. Lcal cmmunicatin with the ECHO mnitr is available by Bluetth cnnectin and direct serial cnnectin (which requires pening the enclsure and shuld rarely be needed). Vltage Regulatr Battery The vltage regulatr regulates and distributes pwer frm the battery pack t the analg, cmmunicatins, and MPU cmpnents n the bard. The ECHO mnitr is pwered by an internal 9-vlt alkaline battery pack (ADS p/n ) munted inside the enclsure. This battery pack prvides the pwer fr perating the mnitr, handling cmmunicatin, and sustaining the mnitr wake-up circuitry. The mnitr measures the battery vltages and signals a warning when the available pwer is lw. The battery vltage is lgged and available n demand when perfrming diagnstics. Installing Antenna In mst cases, the antenna will need t be installed utside the manhle structure fr the ECHO t have sufficient signal strength fr wireless cmmunicatins. If the antenna is t be installed utside, it is recmmended that the antenna be installed prir t the installatin f the ECHO mnitr int the manhle. Antenna Installatin Instructins These installatin instructins will be applicable fr installing the antenna in the rad, in the grund, r under ther paving materials. The antenna ptins are shwn belw.

Hardware Installatin 3-11 Slim (left), Mini-Wing (right) antennas Nte: While this sectin describes the prcess fr installing these antennas, all wireless antennas prvided thrugh ADS als include detailed installatin instructins. 1. Determine the apprpriate lcatin in the rad near the manhle t install the antenna. Lcate the antenna in the rad between 18 and 30 inches (457 and 762 mm) frm the manhle in which the mnitr is installed. Psitin the antenna as far as pssible frm the irn frame and buried flange t prevent interference with the signal. Avid lcatins at which cars will remain parked ver the antenna fr extended perids, as this will interfere with the signal strength. Select a lcatin that drains well s water will nt cllect ver the antenna, interfering with the signal. Chse a lcatin that is as flat as pssible, with a stable base material. Select a lcatin where the antenna will experience minimal direct impact frm rad traffic, where pssible. Make sure the lcatin exists beynd the manhle s irn rim beneath the rad surface. This will enable access t the manhle crbel when drilling the channel fr the antenna cable. Verify that n buried utility cables exist in the area in which drilling will ccur fr the antenna installatin. Cnsider cntacting an Undergrund Utility Lcating Service fr assistance. 2. Mark the lcatin fr the antenna installatin, and then mark the lcatin t drill the crbel hle 2.5 t 3 inches (64 t 76 mm) back frm the edge f the antenna hle. 3. Drill a hle frm the marked crbel hle lcatin in the rad, thrugh the crbel, and int the manhle using the ½ inch (13 mm) by 36 inch (914 mm) hammer drill bit. This will serve as the channel fr the antenna cable extending frm the antenna t the mnitr in the manhle. Be careful t avid any cables in the manhle, and restart the hle slightly t the right r left if mesh is encuntered r resistance ccurs. 4. Cut a 6 inch (152 mm) lng by 1.25 inch (32 mm) wide by 0.75 inch (19 mm) deep hle in the rad using the nn-rtating demlitin hammer (in the hammer nly mde) with the chisel/grinder. This will serve as the installatin lcatin fr the antenna. The crbel hle shuld be under the center f this hle. Hle frm Antenna Installatin Lcatin t Manhle

3-12 ADS ECHO Manual 5. Level the bttm f the hle using the demlitin hammer with the chisel and bushing tl. 6. Thrughly clean ut the hle fr the antenna f all debris, using a shp vacuum with a brush. 7. If the prtective cap is nt present n the cnnectr at the end f the antenna cable, clean the cnnectr and tape it up with rubber splicing tape fr prtectin against damage and debris while it is being fed thrugh the channel. 8. Feed the antenna cable int the hle, thrugh the channel, and int the manhle. Smth any rugh edges where the cable enters the crbel hle with the chisel r rubber splicing tape. In additin, pack rubber splicing tape int the cable hle t prevent asphalt r sealer frm entering the cable hle. 9. Remve the white release tape frm the antenna element. Be careful t avid cntacting the black rubber mastic material with anything until the antenna is ready t be seated. 10. Apply a piece f white release tape nt the tp f the antenna, and then seat the antenna int the bttm f the hle. Once the antenna is firmly seated, remve the release tape. 11. Apply the asphalt n tp f the antenna element. When using asphalt, scp the warm material int the hle and then pack it in using a hammer. Place a piece f wd r metal between the asphalt and the hammer t prevent the hammer frm sticking t the asphalt. Make sure the asphalt prtrudes slightly abve the level f the rad surface. 12. Sprinkle a thick (apprximately 1/8 inch) layer f sand ver the asphalt, and then pund the sand lightly int the surface. The sand must be used t ensure the asphalt des nt adhere t bjects, such as vehicle tires, while drying. ADS recmmends dusting the surface with sand nce again befre leaving the site. Antenna in Cavity with Patch 13. Cil the slack antenna cable and secure it away frm the ther cables in the manhle. Slack enables the technicians t remve the mnitr frm the manhle fr maintenance r service activities with the antenna cable still cnnected. Nte: D nt bundle the antenna and sensr cables tgether. This can significantly diminish antenna and sensr signal strength, disrupting cmmunicatins and limiting sensr accuracy. Nte: T prevent signal lss and damage t the cable and antenna, d nt kink r bend the antenna cable when ciling. Installatin with Antenna Cable Ciled in Manhle

Hardware Installatin Seal the space between the antenna cable and the crbel hle with electrical duct seal r ther regulatin material, as required, t prevent infiltratin int the manhle. Cnnecting the Antenna t the Mnitr 1. Place the mnitr upright n the grund surface beside the manhle where the antenna cable is temprarily ciled. Ensure there is n risk f the mnitr falling int the manhle while cnnecting the antenna. 2. Attach the antenna cable cnnectr t the antenna prt n the back f the ECHO (first remving the electrical tape frm the cable end, when applicable). Ensure the cnnectr is secure. 3. Wrap rubber splicing tape arund the entire cable cnnectin, extending nt the cable apprximately 2 inches (50 mm) beynd the cnnectin with the antenna cable. This will ensure n water ingress int the antenna cnnectin r degradatin f the antenna cnnectr itself. Antenna Cable Cnnected t Prt with Rubber Splicing Tape Applied 4. Carefully cil and secure the remaining slack antenna cabling as necessary. Nte: The user must maintain a distance f 9 inches (229 mm) frm the antenna whenever the mdem is in peratin. Call the mnitr r cnnect t the mnitr n site using a Bluetth cnnectin cable t verify cmmunicatin. Replacing the SIM Card in the Mnitr The ECHO mnitr perfrms wireless cmmunicatins thrugh an internal mdem that is supprted by a replaceable SIM card lcated inside the mnitr enclsure in a hlder n the PCB. The SIM card typically requires replacement nly upn failure, which is rare, r when a change in a wireless carrier ccurs. The ECHO cmes with an AT&T SIM card pre-installed. If a SIM card nt supplied by ADS is t be used, the installed SIM card will need t be replaced. Certain static IPs may be used fr cmmunicating wirelessly thrugh the Qstart sftware platfrm r netwrks supprting ADS hsted system sftware. The service must supprt Mbile Terminated service as well as Mbile-Originated (fr alarm cry ut) functinality. Cmmunicatin with an ECHO requires entering the IP address fr the lcatin in the Qstart sftware. When using a static IP with a public IP address, the PC must have internet cnnectivity. When using a static IP with a private IP address, the PC first must establish a VPN cnnectin with the prvider. (Please cnsult ADS Client Services fr mre infrmatin n using private addresses.) Then, the user can cnnect t the mnitr thrugh Qstart, prvided the lcatin has been prperly cnfigured.

6-8 ADS ECHO Manual Currently, dynamic IPs may be used nly fr uplading data wirelessly frm the mnitr t an FTP server r t ADS FlwView sftware. Cmmunicating directly thrugh ADS sftware t set up and activate mnitrs equipped with dynamic IPs must ccur n-site using a lcal Bluetth cnnectin. The mdem in the mnitr supprting glbal 3G netwrk services requires a standard SIM card fr wireless cmmunicatin. This mdem supprts SIM cards prvisined by AT&T (ADS p/n ) fr public, static IP address peratin as well as SIM cards prvisined by ther carriers fr dynamic IP address peratin. Please cntact ADS fr specific infrmatin abut yur SIM card prvider and cmpatibility f the prvider s SIM card with the ECHO mnitr r n prcuring SIM cards fr use in a specific gegraphic area. Nte: If installing a SIM card that is nt an ADS AT&T public, static SIM, first deactivate the ECHO befre beginning the steps belw. The Mdem Setup device will need t be cnfigured and the mnitr reactivated with the new cmmunicatin infrmatin befre it will be able t cmmunicate wirelessly. 1. Use the enclsed Allen wrench t fully lsen the 6 screws hlding the tp f the enclsure t the bttm where the battery pack is hused. Prvided Allen Wrench Nte: The screws are captive, s they cannt be unscrewed cmpletely and remved frm the tp part f the enclsure. 2. Discnnect the battery and place the tp f the ECHO n an easily accessed wrk space. Make a nte f the IP address and then insert the SIM card. If installing a SIM card that is nt supplied by ADS r is nt a public, static SIM, refer t Chapter 2 fr cnfiguratin f the Mdem Setup device prir t reactivating the mnitr. Placement f SIM Card 3. Recnnect the battery and verify that the COMMS LED illumines green. The green LED will be slid nce the ECHO is pwered n and will begin flashing nce it is cnnected t the netwrk. 4.
