The demand fr speaker supprt materials is increasing at a phenmenal rate. Speaker supprt slides may include: clr cpies frm bks, cmputer generated graphics, X-ray cpy slides, r special types f lecture slides called "blue and white" slides. What Are Blue and White Slides? These slides cnsist f a slid blue backgrund with the text in white letters. These "blues" are made frm black cpy r text printed n white paper, then cnverted in the pht lab t "blue and white" slides. JULY 1991 This type f lecture slide is cmmnplace in the medical and electrnic lecture circuit and has becme a standard in many large cmpanies. When yur lecturing client has a limited budget and shrt turnarund time, but still wants the best quality pssible, blue and whites are prbably yur best bet. Blue and white slides can be made in a variety f ways, using different films, equipment and prcedures. With the relative cst t the client small, and the prfit margin t the lab high, blue and white slides are definitely wrth a try. The equipment required is minimal, and the technical expertise required t make such a slide can be taught in a few hurs. Why Blue and White Slides? The blue and white slide was riginally develped by the medical cmmunity as an inexpensive methd fr relaying data t ther dctrs in medical briefings. They fund that the blue backgrund was the mst pleasing clr t the eye, while creating cntrast between the text and the backgrund. Thrugh medical testing, they als fund that many peple had truble seeing the clr red, and that red tended t make the viewer mre uncmfrtable. Green, n the ther hand, was a mre cmfrtable clr but seemed t lack the cntrast needed t separate the text frm the back- (Cntinued n page 12) 11

Methd 1: Plarid PlaBlue Film The Plarid Crpratin, well knwn fr a variety f instant film prcesses, recgnized the need fr fast and ecnmical lecture slides, and develped a special film called "PlaBlue." Equipment required fr this prcess includes: a sturdy cpy stand with a 35mm SLR camera; tw cpy lights; Plarid PlaBlue 35mm instant film; and, Plarid's manual r aut prcessr. The prcedure fr making Pla- Blues is as fllws: 1. The custmer presents yu with a clean black and white cpy f the desired lecture slide. The text/cpy shuld be made with a carbn typewriter ribbn r n a laser printer Lad the camera with the PlaBlue film and place the black and white artwrk n the cpy stand. 3. Turn n cpy lights and make expsures based n the data sheet and expsure tests made prir t ffering this service.. Prcess the film in the manual r autmatic Plarid film prcessr. 5. Munt the slide and deliver it t yur happy client. Because this prcess requires ne film and is an instant prcess, yu culd ffer it as part f a ne-hur service, r at least as part f yur rush service. T test the film, we recmmend starting at a 1 secnd expsure using an f/stp that is ne r tw stps dwn n the lens. Tests shuld include different image sizes t accmmdate any size art that the client may prvide. The client shuld be warned that crrectin fluid, tape lines, and anything ther than black cpy n white paper might shw n the final slide. Speed and turnarund is the key advantage t this prcess. The disadvantage t PlaBlue is that the film nly cmes in 12 expsure rlls, the expsure is critical, the film is grainy and very susceptible t any uneven lighting. Methd 2: Kdak Vericlr Slide Film 5072 Kdak makes a special film used fr creating slides frm clr negatives. This C-1 prcess film als has applicatins fr making blue and white lecture slides. Equipment required fr this prcess includes: a 35mm cpy stand; cpy lights; Kdak Vericlr 5072 slide film; clr crrectin filters; and, the lab's ability t prcess C-1 films. Kdak makes this film in 36 expsure rlls, 100 ft. bulk lads, and large frmats such as x5 and 8x10. Preliminary tests fr expsure and clr balance shuld be run befre yu start selling this service. We fund that a 1 secnd expsure at f/.5 with 70cc magenta and a -15 yellw filter gave acceptable results when using tw 250 watt cpy bulbs. The prcedure fr making these PHT LAB MANAGEMENT

We knw that this is an added cst, but fr quick alignment n the slide duplicatr it is a tremendus time saver. Yu end up with a master t file away fr future blues.. Retuch with yur Sharpie pen any unwanted marks, cutlines, etc. Expsing the Dupe Film 1. Lad a rll f Kdak 5071 Slide Duplicating film r Fuji slide duplicating film int a slide duplicating machine. 2. If yu have a duble expsing camera, yu wuld set the camera t duble expsure and make ne expsure f the white light thrugh a deep blue filter (Kdak 7 blue wrks very well.) 3. Next, yu wuld munt the Kdalith cpy slide n the duper substage and make a secnd expsure with the blue filter remved.. Prcess the film in the E-6 prcess. 5. Munt the slide and deliver t the custmer. If yu d nt have a duble expsing camera, a secnd methd can be used t make the blue expsure. Munt the blue filter t the frnt f a small electrnic flash r ne that has a variable pwer cntrl (a guide number f -8 wrks best). If yur small flash is t pwerful, yu can blck part f the flash head ff t cut dwn the amunt f illuminatin. In the darkrm, take a piece f masking tape and attach a rll f dupe film t the wall with the emulsin facing ut. Turn the lights ff, pull the film ut t full length, and secure the cassette t the wall with tape s it desn't twist. With yur back at the ppsite end f the rm, fire the blue filtered flash nce. Carefully rewind the film back int the cassette and yu are ready t make the white expsure. Make sure yu mark these blue expsed rlls s that yu dn't accidently use them as standard dupe film. We use this methd t make ur blue expsures, but we generally expse 3-5 rlls at a time. Lad the blue expsed rll int the slide duper and place the Kdalith cpy slide n the base f the duper. Make ne expsure and yu have a very high quality blue and white slide. The advantage t this prcess is its ability t clean up small marks n the riginal cpy. The quality f this prcess and cnsistency is als the highest f the three. The whites are very clean and the blue backgrunds are very smth. This methd als handles the finest f fineline cpy with ease. Anther advantage f the pre-flash methd is in the blue cverage. With all ther methds the blue expsure is in the image area nly. It is pssible that if the film chip slips in the munt the edge f the blue will shw. If yu use the pre-flash methd, the entire film frm edge t edge will be blue expsed. If the film mves in the slide munt there will still be blue shwing. The disadvantage f curse is the time and expense f making a blue and white slide using this methd. This prcess is definitely nt a nehur candidate, but it still can be cnsidered fr rush services. We suggest that yu make the fllwing recmmendatins t yur clients: 1. Use ne piece f paper fr each slide. 2. Make each piece f art as large as pssible n the SVkxll sheet f paper. 3. Leave abut 1-2 inches f empty space t the sides, tp and bttm f the sheet s the cameraman can crp t the prper frmat.. Use a carbn ribbn n yur typewritter whenever pssible, r a laserprinter with typeset-quality fnts. 5. Remember the better the riginal the better the blue. 6. If yu have decided t use ne f the first tw prcesses and yur client brings in artwrk with cutlines, crrectins r tape shwing, place the artwrk n a gd cpy machine and make a new riginal. Pricing and Turnarund Times Pricing f these slides will vary frm lab t lab, depending n verhead and demand in yur lcal area. We suggest that yu d sme cst analysis, price cmparisn, and marketing befre yu set yur prices. We have fund prices frm $5 t $10 per slide depending n lcatin and the structure f the business. Turnarund times will depend n the prcess yu select and the type f clients yu have. If yu have a lt f prcrastinatrs, yu may want t have tw prcesses. The PlaBlue wuld be fr thse wh need it yesterday and understand that the rush will cst them sme quality. Yu culd then use the lnger prcess fr clients wh plan in advance and are willing t wait the 3- days that mst labs have n this kind f wrk. Lecturing with slides is big business wrldwide and invlves sme very lucrative wrk fr pht labs.
