2 Steve Parish workshop to be held on November 19, 2016 and a show of hands indicated that members present were keen to attend. A flyer was ed to members; Brent can provide more printed flyers if needed. Please pass on flyers to interested persons or print and place in local shops etc The club needs a new librarian, the task is really not too onerous but records of borrowing do need to be kept. Rosemary or call her if you re interested. The club is also looking for someone to take on the position of assembling the Critique photos; Cliff, the incumbent, has promised to give support and instruction to anyone willing to have a go. The committee would like to see some of the newer members take on some of the jobs available. Remember it is a good feeling to be able to contribute to your club. It also is another way of advancing your knowledge of photography. The new laptop and projector allow critique images to be a maximum size of 1920 x Some more information about this change will be coming shortly, it is not necessary to change, but it does have the advantage of projecting your images to the judge in a little larger format. Gary Moloney, Steward for the Photographic Section of the Beaudesert Show, reminded us that Entry forms need to be in by Friday 26 August, prints to be dropped off at the show on Tuesday August 30, prints judging is on Thursday 1 st September, with the Show taking place on Friday and Saturday. The prints will be taken down, and prizes given out on Sunday 4 September. Gary is still seeking 1 or 2 more volunteers. If you feel you could spare an hour or two, please contact Gary on gary.moloney51@gmail.com. After all this Club business was out of the way, Ian introduced our own member, Steve Fitchett, to give a presentation on his work and his passion, Sky Diving Photography. Steve began by telling us a little about himself and his career as a skydiving photographer for over 30 years. He is well known and has a good reputation in his field of work. Steve, or Fitch as his jacket proclaimed, showed us his parachute gear in a backpack containing main and reserve chutes, explained what it was made of (silicon-impregnated nylon, its weight 10 kg, and how it worked. He was cool and matter-of-fact about bad landings saying that a large percentage were due to pilot error and possibly in some cases, to the personality of the skydiver which is the opposite of risk-averse. In his opinion, skydiving attracts people with big egos who can be notorious for wanting to go harder, faster, higher, always wanting to be a jump ahead with the latest hi-tech gear. This can lead to not taking the requisite care. The most important part of his gear is his helmet-mounted camera, weighing around 6 kg, with the camera directed with a sight positioned in front of his right eye to leave hands free for other vital things like controlling the cords. The camera shutter is operated by a mouthpiece. He mostly uses a polariser and a flash, shoots shutter priority and turns his head to take shots. Astonishingly to us, he manages to make all this appear second nature while flying at great speed and getting to die for (no, not really!) sharp shots. Way to go! He stressed that dirt diving, practising manoeuvres and holds etc. on the ground, is absolutely essential to a smooth and successful dive, particularly with formation diving. He likes shooting against the sun to get a rim-lighting effect and is more concerned with taking 12 to 15 good shots per jump than taking stacks of photos and then struggling to find 1 or 2 reasonable ones. Steve illustrated his presentation with his own photos which have to be seen to be believed. His enthusiasm and his love for both his photography and for sky diving is boundless and he just glowed talking about it. When Ian thanked him for his talk, it was obvious how appreciative his audience was. Page 2 of 10
3 Left, Steve Fitchett makes a landing from a Skydive Photography shoot. Note the camera gear on his head, which he said weighs about 6 kgs; and the obvious speed of the landing! Below, three of Steve s images he shared with members on the night. A big thanks to Steve for sharing his passion with us. Now we know a little bit about what goes on to create some of the amazing images we ve seen from him. Page 3 of 10
4 After supper, Barry Cheeseman gauged interest in a Natural Light Portrait workshop with more people wanting to take part than Barry could handle in one go because of restrictions with tripods and so on. More to come on this. Brent also gave members a choice for the rescheduling of the City Lights excursion with South Bank the preferred venue on Sunday 25 September with an information sheet with times, meeting points, things to bring to be ed out in the near future. Bob Hall capped the night with a slideshow of his (and Lyn s) visit to Norway and the Spitzbergen Peninsula in June/July this year. He had some great shots of interesting winged creatures called, generically, birds, a polar bear auditioning for an Oscar and a seal-meal which showed Nature red in tooth and claw! Zodiacs and yellow jackets also featured prominently while the icebergs and glaciers were very impressive. Indeed some great photos taken under often difficult circumstances. Thanks to Bob for this. The evening ended with a brief summary from Mark Connop of the Canungra Show photography and some Star Shoot photos from Laravale assembled by Cliff. An absorbing night concluded around 9.15 pm, thanks to all involved. Images from Outings, Travels & Workshops Left, Stars Shoot image, Under the Milky Way by Cliff Pottinger; no the car was not actually pink, just the effect of red lights!! Right, Canungra Rodeo image by Yvonne, one of our newer members. She s obviously not new to photography! Thanks Yvonne. Page 4 of 10
5 On Saturday 6th August members of the club attended a workshop on the deck at the Beaudesert Library. The workshop was primarily for beginners to get to know their cameras but more detail was covered for those more advanced photographers. Below & right, The Beaudesert and Caboolture Camera Clubs got together on August at Esk Caravan Park for a social weekend. Photos were taken, drinks were taken, dinner was taken and new friendships were cemented. Thanks to Cliff Pottinger for the images and captions on this page. Page 5 of 10
